<p>Billions of dollars of research go into the psychology behind spending. Why do we buy the products and services we do? What actually draws us to a brand? Those same principles of the psychology of influence apply not only to business marketing but also to philanthropy.</p>



<p>The same drive we have to purchase that new pair of shoes or invest in a course from our favorite influencer can be channeled to motivate people to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/ways-to-give-back-to-your-community/">donate to charities</a> making a difference and to dig into local and global issues to improve the circumstances around us.</p>



<p><a href="http://roryvaden.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rory Vaden</a>, <em>New York Times</em> bestselling author and co-founder of <a href="http://brandbuildersgroup.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brand Builders Group</a> with his wife, AJ, spends his days advising individuals how to leverage these principles to become <a href="https://freebrandaudiobook.com/SUCCESS" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Wealthy and Well-Known</em></a>, also the title of the couple’s new book rising up the charts. This summer, Vaden pulled back the curtain to reveal the secrets of building influence and income for <em>SUCCESS</em>® readers.</p>



<p>Now, he’s pivoting to teach us how to use it for good—and to motivate ourselves and others to get involved in the causes that mean the most to us.</p>



<p>“You never hit the peak of service,” he says. “You never reach the culmination…. I think it’s important for all <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-start-a-nonprofit-organization/">nonprofits</a> to realize that while it’s always inspiring to serve the many, their work is still worth it even if it serves just one person.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-choosing-a-cause"><strong>Choosing a cause</strong></h2>



<p>The potential causes to support are endless, and every day there’s more work to be done. Kids are starving across the globe. Entire war-torn regions are suffering. People still can’t access clean water. In his first book, <a href="https://amzn.to/47Ie5fb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Take the Stairs: 7 Steps to Achieving True Success</em></a>, Vaden says, “Success is never owned. It is rented, and the rent is due every day. No matter how much money we all give to charity, until every person, until every person on this planet is fed, and every orphan has a family, and every widow is taken care of and every disease is cured, there’s more work to be done,” Vaden says.</p>



<p>According to him, everyone should be <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-give-back-purposefully/">motivated to give</a> and help because he calls philanthropy the most “mature form” of motivation. While competition, ambition and recognition are great and motivate many people, he says, ultimately they are unfulfilling without a mission.</p>



<p>Choosing a cause is simple, he says, “Solve the problem that breaks your heart…. We believe that whatever breaks your heart breaks your heart for a reason.” He explains that people are “hardwired” to care more about some causes than others. With that in mind, take note of what grabs your attention, recognize the signal to care and do something about it, he says.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-start-small"><strong>Start small</strong></h2>



<p>So, what breaks the Vadens’ hearts? Child trafficking is often top of mind for the couple. “[It] just destroys us… we feel like we have to do something about that,” he says. But just as Vaden can’t end all child trafficking, people who care about important causes sometimes feel they can’t give enough to make a real difference.</p>



<p>Vaden says the Dollar Club, through Cross Point Church in Nashville, is a cause directly combating that thought process though, and is one he and AJ love supporting. The idea is simple, yet life-changing for recipients. Once a month, everyone is asked to donate one single dollar, and all of that money is pooled together to fill one very specific need in the community. “Dollar Club is crushing it and making a huge difference!” For example, they provided a family with $10,000 for medical bills and another family with a much-needed car, all with $1 donations at the root of fundraising.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-get-an-entire-team-behind-a-mission"><strong>Get an entire team behind a mission</strong></h2>



<p>Does your company retreat start with a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/importance-of-community-service/">service project</a>? Gathering your team of employees around a cause, such as simply giving a dollar to a specific mission, can be an easy lift that helps engage employees and motivate them to get more involved in philanthropy as individuals and as a group. Rory says you can often find AJ leading service projects with their team such as stuffing bags for the homeless and giving them out.</p>



<p>“[Going] as a team into… a rougher neighborhood, [everyone] is like ‘whoa,’ and it helps create gratitude, teamwork and then contribution to give back,” he says.</p>



<p>You can also help automate giving as a part of company culture, he shares, such as using direct withdrawal from paychecks to specific causes and matching employee giving.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-use-fundamental-brand-building-principles"><strong>Use fundamental brand building principles</strong></h2>



<p>Captivating storytelling. Immediacy. These are just a few of the principles of branding and marketing that directly apply to philanthropy and should be prioritized by those trying to promote and advance different causes, Vaden says.</p>



<p>For example, Dollar Club does tear-jerking interviews with those affected, so people who donate see the direct impact, and they share those videos as quickly as possible, for immediacy.</p>



<p>“Immediacy is powerful… [as is] emotion,” he says. “Tell the story of one person. Saying we donated $100,000 to the Red Cross is far less compelling than telling the story of one family who lost their home, tell us who they are and what happened.”</p>



<p>He recommends motivating others by telling those “granular” stories, focusing on localized impact or how a single life was changed. “That’s how you move the masses,” he says.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-give-without-fear"><strong>Give without fear</strong></h2>



<p>Vaden paints a common picture of someone wanting to give to a homeless person but hesitating because of what the recipient might do with it—“[they say] I’m afraid he’s just going to buy booze with it.” This is where his faith comes in. “At least as a Christian, I feel like we’re not called to assess people’s motives. We’re called to give,” he says.</p>



<p>Another common concern is giving when you aren’t sure you have enough. Yet, he says even if you aren’t religious, just from an “altruistic” side, helping others in need is just “financial intelligence.”</p>



<p>“View money as a tool and less of a source of safety, identity and self-worth,” he says, sharing that when people are too attached to it, and too afraid of losing it, they can’t “let go” and invest in other causes. Practicing emotionally detaching from it helps you develop a stronger relationship, ultimately becoming more productive and helpful with your money, he says. “When you give money, I very much believe it is one of the most important catalysts to you attracting and making more money. It’s a paradox.”</p>



<p>Finally, some people worry they won’t be able to give enough to have a real impact. “Do for one what you wish you could do for everybody,” Vaden says. “The roadblock is—there’s so much need… Why should I donate $5? What is my $5 going to do? But give your $5 to one person on the street…. If we all do that, it adds up.”</p>



<p>Vaden points to theories like Darren Hardy’s <a href="https://amzn.to/42t3cu9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>The Compound Effect</em></a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/4386frM" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>The Slight Edge</em></a> theory and the power of compound interest as support.</p>



<p>“If it makes a difference for one person, it’s worth it,” he says.</p>



<p>So, even if it’s that single dollar to the Dollar Club or a service project as a work team, giving without fear of what will happen next is a place to start, Vaden shares. “Your highest self is when you’re being your highest value to others.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Don't overthink it though. There are likely numerous <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/places-to-volunteer/">places to give back in your community</a>, no matter how small or big of a city you live in. Remember that communities don't need perfection—they just need people willing to show up. Even a couple hours on the weekend counts. The neighborhood cleanup needs your Saturday morning. The literacy program needs Tuesday evenings. Pick something and start.</p>



<p>Typically, there are no formal invitations to volunteer. Sometimes the most important work happens because someone looked around and thought, "Somebody should do something about that"—and then realized they were that somebody.</p>

<p>Serving meals at a food bank or soup kitchen is one of the most common choices for Thanksgiving volunteers. As a day to give thanks and enjoy a meal with others, your local food bank might seem like the perfect place to volunteer. Just remember: Many people sign up to volunteer on Thanksgiving, so you might want to choose a different day to volunteer to ensure you’re helping when the soup kitchen or food bank is in need.</p>

<p>Meals on Wheels is a longstanding organization that helps deliver nutritious meals to elderly or disabled community members. Many programs encourage volunteers to stay and visit with the recipient after making a delivery.</p>



<p>Delivering meals isn’t the only way to volunteer with the elderly or sick on Thanksgiving. Many hospitals and nursing homes invite community members to share a meal or spend time with residents during the holidays. Visiting with residents is a great way to help bring joy to those who don’t have someone to share the holidays with.</p>

<p>Are you more of an animal person than a people person? Your local animal shelter or rescue is a great place to volunteer on Thanksgiving. Many shelters are overrun with pets and can use the extra help. Volunteering on a holiday also gives employees the chance to take a day off and spend time with their families and pets. Be ready to help where you can, even if that means cleaning a kennel in addition to playing with puppies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Even if you’re not training for a marathon, signing up for a turkey trot can be a fun way to get exercise while giving back. Most turkey trots and Thanksgiving Day races are sponsored by local organizations that give back to the community. Typically, entry fees and other donations go to a local charity or cause, often relating to food insecurity in the area.</p>



<p>Not much of a runner but still want to help out? Turkey trot races often need volunteers to help run the event itself. You might be able to help sign in participants at the beginning of the day or hand out water after the race.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-show-appreciation-for-those-who-have-to-work-during-the-holidays">5. Show appreciation for those who have to work during the holidays</h3>



<p>Unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy a day off on Thanksgiving. Essential service providers—from first responders to road workers—often have to work on holidays. A great and easy way to show your appreciation is to deliver care packages with tasty treats and thank-you notes to those who have to work. Some places to deliver your goodie bags include the fire station, police station and hospital. Don’t forget the highway department if you live in an area with snow!&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-6-put-together-care-packages-for-soldiers">6. Put together care packages for soldiers</h3>



<p>Local workers aren’t the only ones who can’t be with their families on Thanksgiving. Double your impact by putting together care packages for overseas troops in addition to local first responders. There are many programs to help you pack and mail care packages to soldiers stationed around the world. Try contacting your local VFW or other veterans organizations to see if there’s a program in your area.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-7-find-volunteer-opportunities-to-clean-up-your-community-on-thanksgiving">7. Find volunteer opportunities to clean up your community on Thanksgiving</h3>



<p>Who doesn’t enjoy clean streets or pristine community parks? Call your friends and family and make a day of picking up trash in your local area. Common places to start include hiking or walking trails, playgrounds and along roadways.</p>



<p>As a bonus, you’ll get a chance to spend some <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-reasons-why-walks-are-good-for-relationships/">quality time walking with loved ones</a> as you move through the park or down the road.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-8-host-or-work-a-donation-drive">8. Host or work a donation drive</h3>



<p>Hosting or working at food drives can be a rewarding opportunity to volunteer this Thanksgiving. Check your local community calendar for any upcoming donation events or start your own with family and friends.</p>



<p>You don’t have to donate just food, either. Other types of donation drives include winter clothing and toys to help bring joy to underserved families during the holidays.</p>

<p>Your local public library, community center and schools are great places to volunteer. Depending on your skills and interests, you might be able to tutor students or host events like story time and arts and crafts. While they might not have volunteer opportunities on Thanksgiving Day, giving your time to these public resources directly benefits your community and helps take the stress off of employees during busy holiday seasons.</p>

<p>Another way to find Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities is to work with established national programs. For example, <a href="https://www.feedingamerica.org/our-vision">Feeding America</a> is a nonprofit that helps raise money and food to lower food insecurity across America. <p>This fall, more than 70,000 students have poured into College Station, Texas, to kick off a new school year at Texas A&amp;M University. And every spring, those students give back to the community through <a href="https://bigevent.tamu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Big Event</a>—the largest one-day, college student–run <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/importance-of-community-service/">service project</a> in the nation.</p>



<p>According to Director Reed McReynolds, a junior at Texas A&amp;M, The Big Event is a thank-you to the communities of College Station and neighboring Bryan.</p>



<p>“We take up their roads, we take up their restaurants, we make a lot of traffic and congestion… [so] it’s a really cool way for us to bridge that gap and put a name to a face,” he says. “Yes, we are college students, and we do take up a lot of this city. But we’re here to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/ways-to-give-back-to-your-community/">give back</a>, and we do want to have genuine relationships… so it’s a really good way for the university to partner with the community.”</p>



<p>Since The Big Event was founded in 1982 by Joe Nussbaum, the service project has expanded to 130 events around the nation as students at other universities and high schools have followed Texas A&amp;M's blueprint. Here’s a closer look at those who have started these nationwide Big Events (and how you can follow in their footsteps):</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-college-students-giving-back-to-the-community">College students giving back to the community​</h2>



<p>For more than 40 years, The Big Event has united the student body and allowed them to connect with full-time residents of Bryan and College Station. The volunteer day embodies all six <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/about/purpose-values.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aggie core values</a>, but it’s selfless service that takes center stage. With tools in hand, students leave campus and do all types of jobs—such as yard work, window washing, cleaning and painting—for both residential and nonprofit property owners in the community who need a helping hand.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although the tangible benefits of property upkeep are undeniable, McReynolds says that one of the “coolest things” about The Big Event is the connection college students make with residents. “People who go and volunteer at these houses.… They make friends with these people,” he says. “Then people request [those same students] the next year to come back.”</p>



<p>To participate, residents file requests for help and student volunteers through The Big Event website. They are then contacted by a staff assistant, who visits the property to meet the owner, document the scope of the job and determine the types of tools that will be needed. In 2025, 17,118 students served 2,374 residents.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers and the magnitude of the event, but selfless service truly shines in the personal interactions this event leads to, leaving a lasting impact on residents and students alike.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, Associate Director Leila Chang, a senior at Texas A&amp;M, says she bonded with a resident two years ago who she still keeps in touch with today. Chang visited the resident the day before The Big Event to make sure everything was ready for volunteers, and they ended up chatting for more than an hour about plants and the homeowner’s cat.</p>



<p>“I ended up… getting to know her and listen[ed] to her story,” Chang says. “She showed me a lot of pictures of her and her family, and I ended up cat-sitting for her that next month…. It’s those little things that really have that impact on the community, and so I’m grateful for that experience.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spreading-student-community-service-nationwide">Spreading student community service nationwide</h2>



<p>Mike Hays, a counselor in Texas’ Northwest Independent School District and a 1996 graduate of Texas A&amp;M, brought The Big Event to Northwest High School in 2013. He says that at that time, there was a push for service leadership in public school systems, and he knew that a volunteer program based on The Big Event would provide that type of experience for students.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The unity and being like-minded on a project that big is really cool,” he says, “[and] that’s something that also moved me, so I wanted to bring it to the kids.”</p>



<p>According to Hays, NHS’ first Big Event drew more than 1,000 student volunteers, and they completed 30 projects, the bulk of which were for elderly residents who needed help with yard work and cleaning up their properties.</p>



<p>His eldest daughter, Abby Richardson, who volunteered at the Northwest event as a young girl, was inspired as a teenager to start The Big Event at her high school, and later at the college she attended. “When I first heard about The Big Event, even at 11, I was immediately obsessed with it and loved the idea of going out and serving the community,” she says.</p>



<p>Richardson says that her main goal when planning each event was to focus on the people they served. “We wanted the people we were serving to think, ‘Wow, we can’t believe those kids just did that,’” she says. “One year, we moved a boat out of someone’s yard, and the kids pulled weeds and took out brush. It looked like a whole different yard when we were done.” She also recalls celebrating a resident’s 99<sup>th</sup> birthday while on-site to clean up her yard. “She had on a sash and tiara,” she adds, “and she was just so happy… to have all these students in her home.”</p>



<p>According to Richardson, “anybody can make a Big Event happen. If you’re excited and passionate about the work that’s being done, you can do it. There are resources out there. Find someone in a position of authority [if you’re a student], or if you’re in a position of authority, find a student and figure out how you can make it happen together.”</p>



<p>Richardson hopes to one day found her third Big Event at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, where she serves as assistant director of events.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-start-a-big-event-community-project">How to start a Big Event community project</h2>



<p>Chang says that the various Big Events held across the country are unique and aren’t regulated or managed by Texas A&amp;M. Instead, they’re inspired by A&amp;M’s effort and are united by the <a href="https://bigevent.tamu.edu/conference/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">One Big Thanks Conference</a>, which is held annually to motivate and train students to lead events at their respective campuses.</p>



<p>While The Big Event originated as a student-led project, there’s no reason a corporation or business couldn’t lead a similar project in their respective communities, using <a href="https://bigevent.tamu.edu/start-a-big-event/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A&amp;M’s template</a>. If you’re looking to do so, McReynolds suggests starting small and taking the time to get to know those you’ll be helping.</p>



<p>“Focus deeply on the connection before you do the service,” he says. “If you can start with five or six homes and really get to know [the] people in those homes, then that’s how you get traction and really start to build something that’s really meaningful.”</p>



<p>Matt Anderson, faculty and primary adviser for The Big Event, adds that if it’s difficult to find residents or specific properties to serve, you should reach out to local community centers or nonprofit organizations for assistance. “They really appreciate that help, as well as the residents,” he says.</p>



<p>Here are some other tips to get you started:</p>

<p>McReynolds says that his goals for A&amp;M’s 2026 event include gathering 1,000–2,000 more volunteers and partnering with 500–1,000 more residents. He and Chang are also working to boost internal relations among their team.</p>



<p>“We want to make sure everyone is known and seen and feels like they have a part and can learn from The Big Event,” McReynolds says.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s been cool to see how one man’s vision to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/hallie-seltzer-talks-leadership-in-business/">serve the community</a> has turned into a lasting legacy at the Texas A&amp;M campus,” he continues, “where we get to live out one of our core values of selfless service.”</p>

<p>When planning a vacation, some people are content to sit on the beach for a week, while others want to give back to the communities they visit. Combining volunteer work with a vacation, sometimes called “voluntourism,” is growing in popularity, expected to increase <a href="https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/volunteer-tourism-market-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">6.1%</a> between 2024 and 2030.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Dedicating time to making a positive difference creates memories far deeper than any souvenir,” says Heidi Clarke, executive director of the <a href="https://sandalsfoundation.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sandals Foundation</a>, a nonprofit organization founded to give back to the communities where Sandals and Beaches resorts operate. </p>



<p>Travelers can also use volunteering to go beyond their comfort zone and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-personal-and-professional-benefits-of-volunteering/">learn something new</a>, whether it’s a skill or a deeper understanding of local culture, adds <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/sarah-roman" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sarah Roman</a>, communications manager, Americas, for World Nomads Travel Insurance, who has volunteered extensively abroad.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>But often,“the story isn’t always so heartwarming,” says <a href="https://www.gocherishtours.com/post/a-letter-from-our-founder-travel-and-recover-from-burnout" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megan Grant</a>, founder of Cherish Tours, a travel agency that curates women-only tours. “Voluntourism can unintentionally do more harm than good,” she says. The volunteer opportunities may wind up costing a bundle without a clear indication of where the money is going or whether anyone is really being helped.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Short-term voluntourism isn’t always helpful,” says <a href="https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us/newsroom/our-people" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leigh Barnes</a>, president of the Americas for Intrepid Travel. “[It] can include risks such as job loss for locals, negative impacts on local childhood development, and harmful miscommunication in highly complex situations.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>That doesn’t mean volunteering on vacation is never a good idea. To be sure you aren’t unintentionally harming the very people you want to help, it’s essential to choose your voluntourism experience carefully. Here are some questions to ask, with answers from experts.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-can-i-find-a-good-volunteer-opportunity">How can I find a good volunteer opportunity?</h2>



<p>Roman suggests picking a bucket-list destination and looking for <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/places-to-volunteer/">local opportunities</a> to give back. Choosing a place you’re excited about visiting can help narrow down volunteer options and ensure you have a great vacation outside of the time spent volunteering.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once you’ve settled on a location, look for volunteer opportunities. “If you already support an organization like the Red Cross or [the] Humane Society, start by looking into on-the-ground places to volunteer that are associated with them,” Roman says. That way, you know that a trusted organization has already vetted the organization, she explains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Or, if you already donate to a non-profit that works in the area where you would like to go, “ask them for recommendations about how to get involved on the ground,” because they may have local partners, she adds. </p>



<p>Some resorts and hotels partner with local communities to arrange volunteer opportunities for guests. For example, Hilton is part of the <a href="https://www.hilton.com/en/p/partners/malama-hotel-offers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mamala Hawaii</a> program. Guests at select Hilton properties can volunteer with local groups that work to protect and restore Hawaii’s environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sandals.com/v2/sandals-foundation-the-power-of-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sandals Resorts</a> partners with local organizations to curate volunteer opportunities for guests on each island where they have a resort. Volunteer opportunities include helping with sea turtle conservation and reading at local school libraries.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-if-i-have-specific-skills-or-none">What if I have specific skills – or none?</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.kindtraveler.com/team/jessica-blotter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jessica Blotter</a>, co-founder, and CEO of Kind Traveler,<strong> </strong>a travel agency that promotes sustainable, purpose-driven travel,<strong> </strong>explains that you’ll have a greater significant impact if you find an organization that will benefit from your specific skills. If you can cook, garden, do carpentry or teach, find an organization that can use your expertise.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you don’t have any skills that can easily be used when volunteering, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/why-is-volunteering-important/">follow your heart</a>. Caroline Dillabaugh, director of impact at <a href="https://fidelityhotelcle.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fidelity Hotel</a>, suggests volunteering in a space that means something to you. "It will feel more meaningful if you're doing something that you care about,” she says.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, if you love animals, look for volunteer opportunities at a local humane society. If you like helping people, take a shift or two at a food bank. If you are passionate about environmental conservation and sustainability, look for ways to plant trees or preserve coral reefs.“The more you care and are connected to the volunteer experience, the more meaningful it will be,” Dillabaugh adds.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-can-i-make-sure-this-opportunity-is-a-good-fit">How can I make sure this opportunity is a good fit?</h2>



<p>First, select an organization that aligns with your moral standards and priorities, Roman advises. For example, volunteering with a religious organization might not be the best choice if you don’t follow that faith, particularly if proselytizing is part of the outreach.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Second, ask how many others will be present when you are volunteering. “You don’t want to show up to a place overrun with volunteers, leaving you with nothing to do, when you could have a larger impact at another organization,” Roman explains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Blotter says the most impactful volunteer experiences fill a community's needs<strong>. </strong>Some well-meaning volunteers may participate in projects (like collecting school supplies) that make them feel good but aren’t needed. “Lead with humility. Volunteering requires listening to understand rather than trying to solve problems,” she says.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One way to ensure that a volunteer project meets a community need is to ask whether any local people are involved. “True impact in travel volunteerism doesn’t come from what we give. It comes from how deeply we connect,” Blotter says.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-some-red-flags-to-look-out-for">What are some red flags to look out for?</h2>



<p>Not all volunteer opportunities are legitimate. “Unfortunately, there are some scams that target tourists wanting to do good,” Roman explains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Any organization that asks volunteers for a large sum of money to participate may be problematic, Roman says.<strong> </strong>Legitimate programs will “show you exactly how your time and money are utilized,” with measurable results, Blotter says<em>.&nbsp;</em></p>



<p>Grant says that a credible organization will welcome tough questions like, How does this project contribute to the local community’s long-term goals? What happens after we leave? Who does this project directly support? If you aren’t sure if an organization is legitimate, check online reviews and contact former volunteers, Blotter suggests.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Avoid experiences that can be exploitative. For example, an organization may take volunteers to orphanages and then ask for donations when volunteers are emotionally vulnerable. These visits can also be harmful to the children.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Doni Belau, founder of <a href="https://www.girlsguidetotheworld.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Girls' Guide to the World</a>, used to run a non-profit in South Africa that supported children with HIV. At first, she allowed volunteers to visit the children and interact with them. However, she stopped when she realized these visits negatively impacted the kids. Belau explains that the children would quickly get attached to the volunteers and when they left, the kids would feel very sad.</p>



<p>“A day or two connecting with a vulnerable child with no follow-up might make the volunteer feel good, but for the child who needs stability, it can be destabilizing,” she says. If you genuinely want to help children, look for opportunities that don’t involve interacting with them directly or commit to a long-term volunteer program.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-there-are-other-ways-to-give-back">Are there are other ways to give back?</h2>



<p>Yes! Volunteering isn’t the only way to have a meaningful impact on the community you are visiting. Instead, you can focus on responsible, community-led tourism, says Barnes. For example, Intrepid Travel partners with local communities to create tours. These tours help support local businesses, hotels and philanthropic projects, such as a coffee shop in Morocco that only employs women and a craft shop in Jordan that employs people with disabilities. The people who work in these places will benefit from both your dollars and time.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-file-a-certificate-of-incorporation-with-the-state">1. File a Certificate of Incorporation With the State.</h3>



<p>The articles of incorporation for the organization will typically include the name of the entity, the principal address, the charitable purpose and other basic information. Each state has different rules and regulations for filing. For example, one state might require the board to have at least three members, and another state may require only one. A charity can incorporate in a different state from where they are based.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-apply-for-a-federal-employer-identification-number-ein-from-the-irs-nbsp">2. Apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) From the IRS.&nbsp;</h3>



<p>An employer identification number (EIN) is a nine-digit number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the number an organization uses when filing paperwork. Filing for an EIN can be done on the <a href="https://sa.www4.irs.gov/modiein/individual/index.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IRS website</a>, and the task is relatively simple. Once the basic information is completed, you will receive a PDF with the new EIN. This is a document that should be stored in a safe place but kept handy because the entity’s EIN will be used on many documents going forward.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-apply-for-tax-exempt-status-from-the-irs">3. Apply for Tax-Exempt Status From the IRS.</h3>



<p>Many people are familiar with the term 501(c)(3), which refers to the section of the tax code set up for entities with charitable purposes. What people may be less familiar with are the 28 subsections under section 501(c). Because of the various ways a group can help a community, the IRS has designated multiple other subdivisions under section 501(c). For example, section 501(c)(4) is for social welfare organizations, section 501(c)(7) is for social and recreation clubs and section 501(c)(19) is for veterans’ organizations. A <a href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p557.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complete list</a> can be found on the IRS website.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Form 1023</a> is the application needed to apply for section 501(c)(3) status. The cost to file is $600, and the form itself is 28 pages long, although many organizations can skip some of the pages. Smaller organizations that want tax-exempt status (those with revenue less than $50,000 a year) can file Form 1023-EZ. The cost to file Form 1023-EZ is $275.</p>



<p>“Very often, a new nonprofit wants to collect money right away, or it has a pending grant that is dependent on it receiving its tax-exempt status,” says Tracy Snow, partner at Lowenstein Sandler. “The founders should form the organization as soon as possible, but the application can take months for the IRS to review and approve. The good news is that once you incorporate, as long as you file the tax-exempt application within the next 27 months, your exemption is retroactive to the date of incorporation.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-file-for-charitable-registration">4. File for Charitable Registration.</h3>



<p>You’ll need to file for a charitable registration in your state, plus others where you will solicit. Generally, when starting a nonprofit, you should register with the <a href="https://www.nasconet.org/resources/state-government/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">attorney general’s office</a> in the state where the charity is incorporated. You should also register with any states where it solicits donations, whether in person or by mail, email or telephone.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-apply-for-sales-and-use-tax-exemption-with-your-state">5. Apply for Sales and Use Tax Exemption With Your State.</h3>



<p>While 501(c)(3) organizations do not pay income tax, they still need to pay sales tax when they purchase items for the organization. Another form to consider obtaining is a sales tax exemption form. Rules vary by jurisdiction, but in general, a sales tax exemption will allow sales tax-free purchases for businesses that are registered nonprofits.</p>

While you might not be sure how your nonprofit is going to solicit donations in the foreseeable future, it’s important to estimate income for the next three years in order to know which form to use when you apply for tax-exempt status.</p>

<p>Throughout this process, it’s critical to keep thorough records and maintain compliance. It’s also important to evaluate and assess the organization’s impact and effectiveness. Most states require nonprofit corporations to file an annual report. The report is straightforward and includes confirmation of the nonprofit’s address and registered agent, as well as a payment. You can complete the annual report online, and it is often due at the end of the fiscal period.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-file-a-tax-exempt-form">File a Tax-Exempt Form</h3>



<p>Nonprofits do not pay income tax, but all nonprofits must file <a href="https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organization-annual-filing-requirements-overview" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Form 990</a>, or a Return of Organization Exempt from Tax. Form 990 asks for detailed information about revenue and expenses for the current and prior years, a current balance sheet, as well as the names and titles of everyone on the board, including any salaries of those individuals. It’s due five and a half months after the end of the fiscal year but can be extended for an additional six months.</p>



<p>Some organizations with income less than $50,000 can file Form 990 E-Z or <a href="https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/new-form-990-n-submission-website-now-open#:~:text=Form%20990%2DN%2C%20Electronic%20Notice,can%20only%20be%20submitted%20electronically." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Form 990-N</a>, a short electronic form also referred to as an “e-postcard.”</p>



<p>If a nonprofit fails to file a 990 for three consecutive years, it will automatically lose its tax-exempt status. By making sure all paperwork is well documented, incoming board members can easily understand the process and continue to keep the organization running smoothly. This way, everyone involved can spend as much time as possible focused on the mission at hand.</p>

<p>Since seniors have already lived a significant portion of their lives, their health may not be in the best shape, and the people around them may not be the same people they’re used to seeing. <p>Giving Tuesday is coming up, and it’s time for <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-start-a-nonprofit-organization/">nonprofits</a> to start reaching out to request donations. But after a strenuous election season during which donors have been giving left and right, are people ready to respond to more solicitations? And what can nonprofits do to make sure they meet their income needs for the end of the year?</p>



<p>Several experts have weighed in to discuss the current environment and how nonprofits can thrive this year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-despite-potential-election-donor-fatigue-nonprofit-donations-may-increase">Despite potential election ‘donor fatigue,’ nonprofit donations may increase</h2>



<p>Many people donated during the recent presidential election—but they may still be interested in donating to their favorite charity this winter. They might even donate more than usual, according to Ben Miller, senior vice president of data science and analytics at <a href="https://www.bonterratech.com/">Bonterra</a>, a social good tech company. </p>



<p>“Because [certain] topics [are] very much at the center of politics,” he says, “people who are supporting candidates who are trying to protect [certain] rights also similarly support organizations in that same regard.” Now is a good time to help those nonprofits do well.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-don-t-shy-away">Don’t shy away</h2>



<p>While soliciting may feel intrusive, for-profit corporations don’t have a problem regularly marketing and asking people to buy their products, Miller explains. Similarly, nonprofits shouldn’t shy away from asking for support, especially if what they are doing benefits people and the world.</p>



<p>“If you're doing good, you should never feel guilty about asking someone to give,” he adds.</p>







<p>While it may seem like Tuesday is the only day for nonprofits to solicit donations, the whole week is important, including the Friday before <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/giving-tuesday-guide/">Giving Tuesday</a>. “It's almost a week of giving,” Miller says. “Don't just think all your efforts have to be on Tuesday.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ways-to-increase-donations-this-giving-tuesday">Ways to increase donations this Giving Tuesday</h2>



<p>Tuning in to how potential donors see your organization is crucial, as is being direct and original. At the end of the day, you are working to create an ongoing relationship with donors rather than guilting them into giving.</p>



<p>Here are a few ways you can more effectively reach your target audience:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-be-clear-with-what-you-re-asking-for">Be clear with what you’re asking for</h3>



<p>People want to help because <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17439760.2021.1897867">making a difference makes them feel good</a>. But they also need to know exactly what they can do and if it’s within their means.</p>



<p>As a result, being completely clear with how much each donation may help an individual can go a lot further than just saying, “We need resources. Please donate what you can.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-be-creative">Be creative</h3>



<p>Giving Tuesday is going to flood everyone’s inboxes with marketing emails from solicitors, so be creative and think of original ways to connect with your audience. “Try to think of innovative ways to be seen,” Miller says. “You're going to be in a flood of communications, so stand out.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-avoid-making-people-feel-guilty">Avoid making people feel guilty</h3>



<p>Appealing to someone’s emotions in a positive way is the goal—but be careful not to make people feel guilty. “[Market your nonprofit] tastefully by… communicating the good that your organization is doing,” Miller adds. “[For example], ‘Look at how this child was able to benefit from your donation’ is what people want to know, and they want to donate because of that.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-show-donors-why-their-donation-matters">Show donors why their donation matters</h3>



<p>People often feel good around the holidays and want to make charitable donations as a result. To appeal to these potential donors, it’s important to show concrete proof of what your organization is doing to help.</p>



<p>“Connect to the good,” Miller advises. “That's [why] people want to give. Ultimately, everyone else is asking for the same thing. [Donors are going to want to] give to your organization because your organization means something to them.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-create-a-relationship">Create a relationship</h3>



<p>One of the best ways to show someone that their donation made a difference is with a follow-up. This creates a relationship, which in turn may encourage future donations.</p>



<p>To create this relationship, let each donor know how much their contribution made a difference. “Maybe in the next quarter, [send the donor] a video that says, ‘Because of you, these people were impacted, these animals were saved or these children were served’,” says <a href="https://supportingworldhope.com/">Sabrina Walker Hernandez</a>, a nonprofit consultant. </p>



<p>She also recommends having each board member write a personalized thank-you note. “In every board meeting…  have a script, [have the board members] write it out [and] sign it, and the CEO can collect those thank you notes,” she says. “Then when the gift comes in… write the name [of the donor] and sign [the card]. That means everybody will get a handwritten thank-you.”</p>



<p>These actions will allow your organization to go above and beyond, and they may eventually create an important personal connection. “If your nonprofit intentionally designed those touches of a thank-you, an update, maybe even a Christmas card,” Walker Hernandez continues, ”those touch points [will help you develop] a relationship with those donors.”</p>



<p>At the end of the day, the goal is to share stories and make connections that will encourage donors to support your organization for years to come. “The goal is to appeal emotionally to people and to also make sure there's a path for establishing a relationship,” she adds. “Nobody wants to feel like an ATM.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-helping-people-make-a-difference">Helping people make a difference</h2>



<p>However you plan to take advantage of the Giving Tuesday climate this year, be sure to think outside the box so you stand out. Don’t be afraid to reach out to potential donors, and do your best to share your story. People want to know that their money is doing some good in the world.</p>

<p>These days, corporate <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/promote-social-responsibility-in-the-workplace/">social responsibility</a> (CSR) is much more than just a buzzword. Your customers and investors are looking to do business with companies that support causes they believe in, such as health, education and environmental preservation.</p>



<p>Unsurprisingly, this holds true for your employees as well. A <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/press-releases/deloitte-purpose-survey-volunteerism.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2024 Deloitte survey</a> found that workplace <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-personal-and-professional-benefits-of-volunteering/">volunteer opportunities</a> can help employees feel “more positive about their work experience” and “more connected to their colleagues.” They also provide employees with a “greater sense of personal fulfillment and purpose.”</p>



<p>The survey also revealed that 95% of respondents believe it’s important that their employer “makes a positive impact in their community,” while “87% of respondents consider workplace volunteer opportunities a factor in their decision to stay with their current employer or pursue a new one.”</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recruiting-engaging-and-retaining-great-employees">Recruiting, engaging and retaining great employees</h2>



<p>Three of the most common benefits of corporate volunteer programs are employee recruitment, engagement and retention.</p>



<p>When your company is known for its philanthropic efforts, recruitment will require much less of an effort. Potential employees will be familiar with your initiatives, and as a result, they’ll want to become part of a company that shares their own values. A <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/us/Documents/us-citizenship-2011-impact-survey-employee-engagement.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT Survey</a> found that “even among those surveyed who rarely or never volunteer, more than half (61 percent) say that a company’s commitment to the community would likely be a factor when choosing between two potential jobs with the same location, responsibilities, pay and benefits.”</p>



<p>Many companies use employee engagement as a metric to gauge the level of enthusiasm that employees feel toward their organization. An engaged employee participating in corporate philanthropy efforts develops a sense of commitment to his or her company, which results in improved customer service and a willingness to work toward a common goal. Many companies accomplish this by providing time off for volunteer work, matching gifts, offering pro-bono projects or handing out rewards based on service hours completed.</p>



<p>Lastly, employee retention can be a major source of savings in both training time and money. According to a <a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/247391/fixable-problem-costs-businesses-trillion.aspx#:~:text=The%20cost%20of%20replacing%20an%20individual%20employee%20can,of%20approximately%20%24660%2C000%20to%20%242.6%20million%20per%20year." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2019 study by The Gallup Organization</a>, replacing an employee can cost a company “one-half to two times the employee’s annual salary.” Deloitte’s Volunteer IMPACT research also found that employees who frequently participate in workplace volunteer activities are more likely to be proud, loyal and satisfied compared to those who rarely or never volunteer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timberland-leads-the-way-in-csr">Timberland leads the way in CSR</h2>

<p>According to Curt Coffman and Marcus Buckingham, co-authors of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/First-Break-All-Rules-Differently/dp/0684852861" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>First, Break All</em> <em>the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently</em></a>, engaged employees are builders. “They use their talents, develop productive relationships and multiply their effectiveness through those relationships,” Coffman and Buckingham say. “They perform at consistently high levels. They drive innovation and move their organization forward.”</p>

Customers will want to do more business with you, talented professionals at all levels will want to work for your company and the employees you already have will be reluctant to leave.
