Appreciating Language with Dr. Shawn Robinson
Dr. Shawn Robinson was diagnosed with dyslexia as a teen. After being encouraged to pursue a mastery of language, he created Dr. Dyslexia Dude, a series of graphic novels that feature a young superhero with dyslexia. This week, Robinson joins Karen Allen to talk about his own dyslexia journey, why the dictionary is his favorite book, and all of the unexpected benefits that come with studying language and sounds.
After his diagnosis, Robinson was enrolled in a summer literacy program by his mother. The experience turned out to be an enormous benefit and the catalyst for his career today, as the professor encouraged and inspired both his love of sounds and words. Robinson, one of many students who were not given accessible instruction to accommodate their dyslexia, now teaches others with the same barriers. He discusses his love of the dictionary and the depth behind the words therein, the confidence and empowerment language provides, and the purpose of Dr. Dyslexia Dude.
