Innovation Field NotesThe Passenger Theory
Nobody boards forever. That is not sad. That is the design.
Sometimes walking toward what is next is not abandoning what you love. Sometimes it is the only way to let it grow.
Hello ambitious humans,
There is a theory I have carried with me for a long time. People come into your journey like passengers. Some ride with you for one stop. Some ride for years. And the ones who matter most are not always the ones who stay the longest. They are the ones who changed the direction of the ride.
Nobody boards forever. That is not sad. That is the design.
I have been thinking about this because of everything this season has taught me. I came in expecting one path and found another one entirely. One I never could have planned. I learned that what you are called to do will never matter as much as what you give while you are here. The work is the legacy. The people are the legacy.
I learned that the lessons I resisted the most, the ones I argued with and pushed against, were the ones that were building me the whole time. They make sense now. I just had to keep riding long enough to see it.
And I learned this, the hardest lesson. Sometimes walking toward what is next is not abandoning what you love. Sometimes it is the only way to let it grow. To let the people you believe in step into the space you were standing in. To trust that what you poured into something does not leave when you do. Growth is not always staying. Sometimes growth is knowing the difference between holding on and holding back.
I am proud that I was here at SUCCESS. I am proud of who I grew into over this last year. Not everything went the way I expected, but I grew anyway.
Some things are a moment in time. That does not make them small. It makes them precious. The ride mattered. The passengers mattered. Every stop mattered.
Sharing my thoughts with you mattered.
The last thing I’ll leave you with:
Look around at where you are right now. This exact seat, these exact people. It will not always look like this.
Love it while it is yours.
Until our paths cross again,
Rachel
