Years ago, in the middle of my comedy career, I was in New York City driving a rental car that kept breaking down. It was 98 degrees, the air conditioning didn’t work, and sweat was pouring from my body. To make matters worse, I was in the world’s biggest traffic jam and already 45 minutes late for a very important audition. I started to feel an <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/why-you-have-to-take-control-of-your-thoughts/">avalanche of negative emotions</a> building up, putting me in a bad mood. What else could possibly go wrong? Soon I realized that was the wrong question to ask. Because whenever you ask a question like that, the universe has its own way of answering you.



I drove up to the tollbooth with beads of sweat running down my face. Reaching into my pocket to pay the toll, I immediately realized that I had left my money at home. I sat there in total amazement at the series of events that were keeping me from my destination—and I started to take it personally. I actually believed something out there was gunning for me and was quickly gaining. For a minute I was in a daze, so much so that I was unaware of the cars beeping and people cursing at me.



<h2 id="h-how-to-get-out-of-a-bad-mood-with-humor">How to get out of a bad mood with humor</h2>



The guy in the tollbooth finally asked, “Can I help you?” I don’t know what possessed me, but I said, “Yeah, I’ll have a couple of burgers, two fries, a coke… and get something for yourself, Sparky!” Apparently he was new to this country and didn’t understand my brand of humor. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but we do not have food here!”



“Well,” I replied, “then you better get some because you’re holding up traffic!” As soon as I answered him, I noticed he had started to laugh. And then, to my surprise, so did I. The long line of drivers behind me, however, did not join in the fun. The horns and cursing continued. “Come on, we got to get moving!” “What the heck is the problem up there?” Then my newfound friend stuck his head out from the tollbooth, motioned to the line of cars and shouted, “I am very sorry, but we ran out of food. Please try the next booth!” By that point, we were both hysterical over the absurdity of the situation, high-fiving, howling and in a better mood.



The coolest thing is that he let me go without paying. “This toll is on me,” he said. “I am new to this country, and this is only my second day on the job. Believe me when I say, I really needed to laugh today!” I looked at him and said, “Believe me, so did I!” We shook hands and wished each other a great day. I drove away from that tollbooth <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/12-ways-to-boost-your-mood-in-less-than-10-minutes/">with a totally different outlook</a>, able to plant <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-realistic-tips-to-be-more-positive/">positive thoughts in my head</a> and think of constructive ways to deal with <a href="https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/steps-getting-audition-nerves-13429/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the important audition ahead</a>.



<h2>A positive snowball effect</h2>



And guess what? I had a great audition! It’s a good thing I did, because it led to an important break in my career, one that paved the way to many other opportunities. I often ask myself, What would have happened if I had gone to the audition in the mood that I was in before the tollbooth incident? I wouldn’t have had a chance, no way—especially since I’d almost turned the car around to go home.



But when I started to laugh, there was an instant change in my mood. I was able to calm down and actually visualize a happy ending to my audition. Do you know why? <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/the-stress-management-and-health-benefits-of-laughter-3145084" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">When you start laughing</a> at a stressful or <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-strategies-for-working-through-difficult-emotions/">highly emotional situation</a>, your brain is no longer registering negative thoughts that serve to intensify your already out-of-control emotions. In fact, your brain is now somewhere else, laughing at something ridiculous that you just did. So even when your brain goes back to the tense situation at hand, you won’t feel as overpowered by it as you did before, because your laughter has put a stop to the snowball effect. You have calmed down your nervous system to the point where you can actually think rationally and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/7-practical-tips-to-achieve-a-positive-mindset/">shift your thoughts</a> to a more positive outcome.



Sometimes making the shift to laugh and take a step back in order to reassess things from <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-strategies-to-cultivate-an-optimistic-outlook-at-work/">a more optimistic perspective</a> seems to be the only remedy to the random craziness of life.



I had two choices: shouting at the steering wheel or finding humor in a stressful moment. I chose laughter. Because really, what did my steering wheel ever do to me?

Years ago, I attended the wake and funeral services of a friend, a fellow comedian, who was killed in a car crash. I have been to many wakes, viewings, funerals and memorials throughout the course of my life, but there was something special about this one in particular. Perhaps it was because the funeral was during the holiday season, just a few days before Christmas Eve. Either way, an awareness came over me that day that caused me to cope with grief and view the losses in my life from a different perspective.



When the service was over, a group of family members and close friends met at a relative’s house. As I scanned the room, I noticed people wiping away tears and consoling one another. Some were understandably <a href="https://www.betterup.com/blog/how-to-process-grief" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">having a difficult time accepting</a> the unfair twist of fate that had fallen upon someone who had so much talent and so much to offer.



<h2 id="h-reminiscing-to-cope-with-grief">Reminiscing to Cope With Grief</h2>



From across the room, I overheard a few comedy friends telling a funny story that I was familiar with. So I decided to join in on the conversation and offered an anecdote about my friend’s affinity for football. Soon everyone in the room joined in and was laughing and reminiscing about the good times we shared with him. That’s when it happened. In the midst of all the laughter, a strange, uplifting feeling came over me. I was no longer grieving over my friend.



My energy immediately shifted as I was temporarily delivered from my pain, and I witnessed everyone else feel the same sensation. In fact, my friend’s wife said, "You know this was his favorite time of the year. It always brought the little kid out of him. I miss him and always will, but right now, I feel as if a part of him is with us and always will be." Then she paused and said, "It's as if he's saying to all of us, ‘It’s OK. I'm OK. Everything is as it should be and I will always be with you.’”



At that moment his death was not the point of focus. The only thing that mattered was the powerful feeling we were all experiencing. For the remainder of the evening we honored our friend by allowing ourselves to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. It was our ability to laugh and reminisce about the good times that ignited that spirit and helped us cope with our grief.



<h2>Using Laughter as Medicine</h2>



That day <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/laughter-as-a-coping-mechanism-3144664" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the simple ability to laugh</a> took us from a place of pain and uncertainty to a place of inner peace and hope. It made us all realize that, throughout our journey, there really are no goodbyes, only good memories. The spirit moves on, and we all move on in turn.



We all experienced something very special that day. I believe laughter and the holiday spirit are synonymous. They both have a magical way of breaking down barriers and reminding us that <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-importance-of-community/">we are never alone</a>—we are all connected, even in times of grief.



Grieving may not be unavoidable. In fact, it’s necessary to cope with grief in order for us to heal. But finding the laughter in between the tough times is essential to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/you-can-choose-happiness/">living a happier life</a>. It's a higher part of yourself, urging and reminding you that life still goes on, regardless of whether you like the way it goes or not. There will be good times and bad times, but in the end, all you'll really leave behind are memories. So you might as well attempt to enjoy them all!

When work and life <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/theyec/2022/06/07/3-tips-to-improve-your-work-life-balance/?sh=d4237e6fa3cb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">are out of balance</a>, you might have a conversation in your head that sounds something like this:



I love my job, but it hurts that I am missing out on valuable time with my kids, time that I know I will never get back. I am going to have to occasionally leave early so that I can have more time for them. When I get home too late, I know that I missed out on something very special. And I don’t like going to bed feeling guilty.



I’m tired of taking my job home with me. I need a weekend off from work, without interruption. I want to be able to do what I want—read a book, listen to music, work in my garden, sleep. I miss this part of myself, and I’m taking it back.



My spiritual reservoir is empty. Taking time to commune with nature is important to me, and I barely have time to meditate or to appreciate a sunrise or sunset the way I used to. I guess I just got caught up. Yes I’m successful, but I don’t feel fulfilled. I have to bring that sacred part of me back to myself. I deserve to be happy on all levels.



Sound familiar?



There’s no doubt we are living in <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-find-freedom-from-toxic-hustle-culture/">a world so fast-paced</a> that it’s easy to get lost and misplace our feelings and values.



A value can be something tangible or intangible that we hold in high esteem—like family, freedom, spirituality, health, goodness, playfulness, self-sufficiency, time to spend as we like and so on.



Your personal and professional lives are individual parts that together make up the whole of you. If you put most of your time and energy into just one, you run the risk of leaving the other unfulfilled.



So <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-separate-your-work-from-your-identity/">when our jobs consume us</a>, our souls pay the price. Of course, it is important to love what we are doing for a living. It is essential that we devote quality time toward our job and do our work with excellence. The problem arises when what we do for a living interferes with our other precious core values.



These cherished values are sacred parts of us that need to be <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/click-here-happiness/202111/what-are-your-values" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experienced and expressed</a>. They give us self-worth. If we ignore them for too long, it leads to unhappiness, regardless of how prestigious your profession is, how much money you make or how successful you think you are.



When you have conversations like these in your head, it’s a sign that <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/3-tips-to-open-your-heart-mind-and-life-to-change">things must change</a>—and it is up to you to change them.



When you finally become aware that your job is interfering with other important parts of yourself, you can begin searching for ways to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blending-is-in/">create more balance</a> in your life.

What Happy, Successful, Optimistic People Know About Life

The most important<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/13-life-rules-to-keep-you-motivated"> </a>lesson I’ve learned from living on this planet is what any happy, successful, optimistic person knows about life. We will all experience good times and bad times, we will all have sad days and happy moments, nothing in life is permanent, and our success and happiness depends on our ability to ride these waves of change with composure.



Happy, successful, optimistic people are not exempt from the trials and tribulations of life. In fact, some of the happiest, most successful <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/these-2-daily-habits-can-help-build-your-optimism-muscle-in-difficult-times/">and optimistic people</a> I know have had to overcome unbelievably difficult circumstances to get to where they are today. But what they all have in common is their uncanny ability to shift their focus to a higher part of themselves.



They allow themselves to temporarily step away from those moments that are bringing them down or are causing them pain and immediately begin to focus on aspects of their lives <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/15-lifestyle-hacks-for-finding-happiness/">that bring them joy</a> and lift their spirits. They feel blessed for the things that life has given them rather than cursing the things life has denied them or the unwanted things life is throwing at them.



They<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/4-ways-to-laugh-more"> </a>find the laughter during tough times and sometimes even during the worst times. But they don’t just put on blinders and ignore that they are going through a difficult time—they instinctively know when to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-i-use-my-journal-to-change-my-mindset/">shift their mindsets</a> to something that will put them on a more productive path. In reality, we all have the power to do this. And it’s what I call a “power shift in focus.”



Being able to create a power shift in focus is one habit that can have a tremendous impact on your life. Why? Because it's a direct answer to the question life is always asking of you: Who do you think you are?

You can’t stop life from throwing stuff at you. You can’t stop the unexpected from interfering with your goals and dreams. But you can choose how to respond.

When you temporarily step away from challenging situations and steer your attention to something that makes you feel good, you are thereby replenishing your spirit and<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/33-ways-to-feed-your-soul"> </a>nourishing your soul, the very essence of who you are. When you do go back to face the situation that is causing unease in your life, which inevitably you must do, you will<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/what-to-do-when-you-feel-overwhelmed"> </a><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-questions-to-ask-yourself-when-you-feel-overwhelmed-with-life/">feel less overwhelmed</a> and the answers will come to you more readily. This is because you’ve calmed your nervous system down to the point where you can embrace the situation rather than have the situation control you.

They refuse to give up their right to enjoy life. And guess what? So can you.

In other words, you can’t know true peace until you’ve experienced chaos. You can’t know joy unless you’ve felt pain. Conversely, no matter how many tears may fall, there is still room for a smile, and even laughter. You must experience one end of the emotional spectrum to fully appreciate the other. A power shift in focus is a skill that nourishes your soul and significantly changes how you view life. It can be improved with practice and is a key to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/you-can-choose-happiness/">creating a happy life</a> for yourself.



So practice a power shift in focus. Temporarily step away from those moments that are bringing you down and focus on aspects of yourself that lift you up. Bless the things that life has given you, rather than cursing what you are lacking. And always find the laughter during tough times. This is what happy, successful, optimistic people know.

world a wonderful place to be. I can honestly say that I’m the happiest when

take my word for it. Try it and see for yourself. The next time an opportunity

a stranger</a>) and notice how you feel.&nbsp;

The best way
to give to someone is without expectation that you will get something in
return.&nbsp;&nbsp; <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/serve-others-to-get-all-you-want/">The reward for
giving</a> or an act of kindness is a simple, but powerful, sense of joy. In
fact, when I’m in the giving or kindness mode, I often get the lyrics of the
late, great Louis Armstrong stuck in my head: “And I think to myself, what a
wonderful world.” 



Years ago, I
was having dinner alone at a wonderful restaurant at a hotel in Maui,
Hawaii.&nbsp; It was a business expense, so
don’t give me a hard time. A couple dined a few tables away. I don’t know what
it was about them, but glancing their way I could see that they were completely
engaged with each other and it made me feel good. I overheard them talking to
their waiter and discovered they were on their honeymoon. I watched as they
held hands and gave thanks for the meal. Then they clinked their glasses softly
and made a toast. I felt inspired by them and was moved by their obvious
affection for each other. 



As I finished
my meal, I called the waiter over and told him that I wanted to pay for the
couple’s dinner. I billed their meal to my room and asked him to add a generous
tip for himself. I also asked him not to reveal who paid the bill and handed
him a note to give to them when they left. This is what the note said: “One
could tell at first glance that <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-find-your-love-match/">you belong together</a>.
I wish you peace and joy.” 



The next
morning, I found a note on the floor by my door. It was from the waiter:

Dear Mr. Rizzo, 



I believe what you did last night was a wonderful gesture, and you
need to know the true impact you had on our newlyweds. When I told them that
someone paid for their dinner, they were surprised to say the least. But when
they read your note, they were overwhelmed with emotion. Then they explained
why your note had such an effect. 



Our newlyweds are having a tough go of it at home. For reasons
they didn’t say, their families, including children from their previous
marriages, are not too keen on them getting married. So, rather than having a
wedding ceremony filled with people who really didn’t want to be there, they
decided to come to Maui to get married.&nbsp; 



They said that they made a toast and asked for a sign that they
did the right thing. You, Mr. Rizzo, were the answer to their prayers. They
said you confirmed, through divine guidance, what they already knew about each
other. They asked me that if I ever saw you again, to please tell you, thank you.
Thank you! Thank you for being their messenger of hope.

Growing up in New York, I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, but never a messenger of hope. I liked the sound of it. 



The point is,
we all have opportunities to be messengers of hope when we <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/4-lessons-ive-learned-from-a-life-of-giving/">give
of ourselves</a> and indulge in acts of kindness. These acts of kindness are
spontaneous gestures that are driven by <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/dr-henry-cloud-the-most-important-part-of-success-is-connection/">a
sense of connection</a> with other people and a realization that we’re all dependent on each
other as we go through life. It’s really your higher self’s way of reminding
you that this is what life is all about. When you give of yourself, though, you
are giving to yourself.&nbsp; It gives
you a sense of hope in a world that sometimes seems hopeless.&nbsp;

When you are confronted with an obstacle in life, do you assume there are more to come and proceed on your way with your head down, dreading failure? When an irate customer takes out his or her frustration on you, do you let one person’s negativity transform your mood for the worse? When the “noes” outweigh the “yeses” in sales, do you carry the rejections with you into your next sales pitch? If you answered yes to these questions, you are not only in danger of stifling your innate potential, but you are at risk of never finding out of who you truly are or what you can become. It’s easy to let life’s challenges sap your energy, dissipate your motivation and give you a pessimistic outlook, but there is a way to to prevent difficult situations and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-stop-the-rampage-of-negative-thoughts/">negative thoughts</a> from standing in your way of success and happiness. There is a way to unleash your true potential.

I know this from personal experience. In high school, I was voted “Least Likely to Succeed,” and on top of that, I had a guidance counselor tell me that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college. I laugh about these things now, but it was those negative labels that fostered toxic beliefs, that in turn began to shape my general outlook and hold me back from success and happiness as an adult. Let me make this very clear: Nothing—absolutely nothing—will keep you from seeing your self-worth and experiencing your full potential more than <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/15-quotes-to-overcome-your-self-limiting-beliefs/">toxic beliefs</a>.

In the early stages of my adult life, I couldn’t understand why opportunity wasn’t knocking at my door. Looking back now, I realize that opportunity was knocking, but my fears and toxic belief system were preventing me from perceiving and taking action on it. It’s the same problem that I believe so many people face on a regular basis in business and life. I had the talent and potential to succeed, but I lacked the confidence to move forward. I didn’t believe in myself, and if you don’t <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-art-of-true-confidence/">believe in yourself</a>, you’re not going anywhere but down.

It is the only place where you can live and learn. The present is where you can make a difference. It is where you can truly express yourself and experience boundless opportunity.

The fortunate among us know this in a profound way. And they live their lives accordingly. They participate knowing there’s a chance they can fall and lose it all. They’re willing to play the “game of life,” aware that defeat is a possibility, but they choose to focus on a victorious outcome. They’re anxious to attend the “school of life,” knowing that they will be subjected to difficulties, challenges, loss and tragedy, but as long as they learn the lessons, they will prevail and opportunity will flourish. The right to choose one’s own way. And that choice happens every second of every day.

I know I’ll never know what favor or misfortune life has in store for me and I’m not supposed to know. But I will never know what I’m made of if I don’t participate in every moment with courage, patience, positive thinking and an optimistic attitude. All of these pave the way for opportunity.

I believe opportunities come as seed possibilities that in time will gradually grow into the desire you want to manifest. The seed, however, will not grow without the proper care and nourishment it needs in order for it to take root and blossom into its full potential. That’s your job and responsibility.

If you are creating a business plan, or <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/rachel-hollis-10-10-1-plan/">writing out your goals</a>, or really anything at all that needs to be accomplished during the day, it is up to you to first cultivate your state of consciousness, which is your “garden,” with positive thoughts, words and the right attitude so the seed possibility for opportunity can take root.

Then once the seed is planted, it is essential to continue to nourish the seed possibility with a steady flow of nutrients from the streams of faith, the right attitude and a continuous <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/what-i-learned-from-30-days-of-positive-thinking/">constructive way of thinking</a>.

It’s important to remember that seed possibilities for opportunity can come in many guises. They can come in the form of a book, an inspiring movie, lyrics to a song, an advertisement, a dream, an idea that hits you as you’re exercising, walking your dog, driving your car, having a conversation with a total stranger, shopping or taking a shower—anything that will inspire you to take action. You have to be open to it in any moment, not just when you’ve decided it’s appropriate.

People often wonder why opportunity doesn’t come their way. I believe opportunity comes into our lives more often than we think, but it’s our own negative inertia that keeps us from acknowledging it.

Acknowledging every moment as an opportunity to transmit and receive is your choice and your responsibility. I mean, sometimes opportunity is right in front of you screaming, “Hey pal, I’m right here in front of you! Take advantage of me! This is what you asked for. Come on, wake up and acknowledge me! I’m not going to be here all day!’”

Understand this: It’s impossible for anyone to acknowledge opportunity if they can’t see it. And the reason they can’t see it is because of their attitude. They lack faith. They’re on a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-stop-the-rampage-of-negative-thoughts/">rampage of negative thinking</a>. They’re consumed with anger, fear, jealousy, guilt or a combination of other negative emotions. All negative emotions, are destroyers of the spirit. They keep the light from a truer, higher part of yourself from shining.

In other words, if you’re not in the right state of consciousness, opportunity lays dormant in the darkness, and in a short period of time, it will simply fade away. Its purpose is lost.

It’s crucial that we come to the understanding that we are the creators of our lives. We are in more control of our destiny than we think.

We must remember that every moment is an opportunity to invoke the Universal Law. Simply stated, you attract to your life anything you give your thoughts, energy, focus and attention to—whether you want it in your life or don’t want it in your life. What you think about and say out loud is what you create.

As long as you keep thinking in limiting ways that define and reinforce <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/to-achieve-something-outrageously-extraordinary-requires-extreme-effort/">the “impossible you,”</a> you will never be able to experience the opportunities that are in store for you.

Your responsibility to yourself, as well as to the Universal Law, is to make sure you are inwardly poised and to keep your thoughts positive and loving, in spite of the injustice or chaos around you. That’s what faith is all about.

A major key to success and a healthy life is to enjoy yourself during the process of whatever you are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, enjoyment is something that many people leave by the wayside—especially when change is taking place at a tremendous rate and the pressure is on to reinvent yourself and achieve new goals.

More now than ever, people are having difficulty balancing their lives, and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to get everything done. Stress levels can get too intense, and negative emotions like self-doubt, overwhelm, anger and fear can become dangerous mindsets. Without ever realizing it, people allow their ability to have fun become secondary at a time when it’s most necessary.

Studies have shown that those who make conscious choices (and it is a choice) to enjoy themselves and laugh throughout the day are more creative, productive and resilient to challenging situations. They are also more likely to easily find solutions to complex problems. In other words, focusing on your happiness not only makes you smarter but shifts motivation in to high gear. Doesn’t it just makes sense that if you are enjoying the process of whatever you are trying to achieve, that the odds will be in your favor to stay motivated and reach the outcome you desire? But I would wager any amount of money that when writing out their short or long-term goals and plans, most people don’t count enjoying themselves during the process as part of the equation. They put their happiness on hold when they repeat and internalize negative statements like: “I’ll enjoy myself when I get the job done,” “I’ll be happy when I’m appreciated,” or “I’ll be happy when I make more money.” And of course the Big Kahuna: “I’ll enjoy myself when I reach a certain status in life.”  Wow! The pressure we put on ourselves…

I understand how easy it is for us to get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of trying to make a living that we forget what it’s like to live. I know that sometimes life consumes us to the point where we allow ourselves to become imprisoned by our own personal dramas and become blind to all the good that is in our lives. But who says we can’t at least try to acquire a healthier attitude and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/11-simple-ways-to-find-joy-in-your-everyday-life/">look for the joy</a> in and around our challenges and setbacks. Why not focus on what’s working, rather fixating on what isn’t?

The good news is there are always fresh opportunities to feel good and to be happy. Imagine life is like Grand Central Station where happy times arrive around the clock. Chances are, the opportunity to feel good and to be happy has already arrived. Sometimes it’s right in front of you. For whatever reason, you are unable to shift your focus to notice and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-ways-to-amplify-the-good-life/">appreciate it</a>.

Regardless of what is going on around you, you can feel happier, you can be productive, attract success, and enjoy yourself during the process. There are those who refer to life as a game, and as you well know, anything can happen in the game of life. Awhile back, I was watching the Super Bowl at a hotel bar. There were well over 100 people in the lounge area, and everyone was yelling and cheering for their team to win.

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was an incredibly close game. Every time a team scored or made a great play, fans would jump out of their seats and cheer their team on. The place was electric!

Here’s my point. Who can deny that the enjoyment and the excitement was coming from the anticipation of not knowing for certain which team was going to be victorious? My question to you is this: What would be the point in watching the Super Bowl, or any other sporting event, if you knew beforehand which team would win? Who can deny that it’s in the not knowing that makes it exciting and worthwhile?

It’s the same with the game of life—yours, mine and everyone on this planet. Unlike any other game, however, the goal in the game of life is not to win or to be the best, but rather to follow your heart regardless of your circumstances and to learn <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/15-quotes-filled-with-inspiring-life-lessons/">life’s lessons</a> along the way. It’s the journey that matters most.

Whether you view life as a dance, a school, a game or a test doesn’t matter. Did you know that you can create miracles? Yes, that’s right. You can create miracles. In fact, our main purpose on this planet is to create miracles. Keep in mind that sometimes a miracle is nothing more than a shift in perception. It’s looking at something where at one point seems absolutely impossible to achieve, then with a shift in the way that you’re thinking, that impossibility suddenly becomes very possible.

All miracles start with a single thought… and idea. Stay with me here and allow me to make my point.

Besides being dead, what do Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers have in common? All three were inventors. Well, there was a moment in time where the light bulb, the telephone and a flying machine were just seed possibilities in the minds of the inventors.

But the more attention and intention they gave to those thoughts, the more similar thoughts—or “like- thoughts”—came into play. And the more like-thoughts that came in to play, the stronger their vibration to the Law of Attraction was, and so on and so on.

Eventually, those small insignificant thoughts multiplied and evolved into <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/your-thoughts-create-your-beliefs">powerful beliefs</a>. And those beliefs eventually led to taking action, which played out into their experience and the Universal Law delivered wonderful circumstances, conditions and people to work in their favor, and their desires began to manifest.

Were they confronted with challenges and doubts along the way? Absolutely! But they kept forging ahead. Until one day, behold, on all three accounts, a miracle took place. What once seemed impossible, even ridiculed and laughed at by the great majority, became a miraculous happening for all to witness and praise. And all three, like all other inventions, discoveries, works of art, business endeavors and dreams that come true, theirs started with one simple thought—a simple <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-crucial-mindset-shifts-to-achieve-everything-you-want">shift in perception</a>. A seed possibility. That, my friend, is how miracles happen.

Here’s my point. Thoughts are the first step for all things to be. If you believe it hard enough and work hard enough, it will become reality.

Not only does the above statement rhyme, but it is also a fact. Our greatest gift is the power of thought. And I don’t mean just the ability to decide between a salad and a sandwich for lunch. I’m talking about the ability to change your environment with your mind! It is the foundation of free will. Thoughts are pure energy that can take you to the highest of highs, or the lowest of lows.

Each and every one of us has the power to shift our way of thinking to transform our lives from failure to success, from unhappiness to fulfillment and from lack to abundance. You didn’t think you were that powerful, did you? Well, you are! We all are! It’s just that most of us don’t know it. Visualization is a common sense success strategy that can keep you motivated and focused to achieve your goals throughout the day. As I’ve often said, “Visualize and it will materialize.”

Visualization is the applying of your given gift of imagination to your faith and confidence. You can use it to discover ways to work through tough times, to rise above your problems and see the possibilities of a solution. It can also be used in the process of healing or to manifest a particular desire.

I know that doubt is the great nullifier when you want a particular desire to manifest. When I visualize what I’m asking for as being answered, I am more confident and it enhances my results. Having an unshakeable belief that my desires will manifest at the right time is certainly empowering. But when I see what I want in full detail, it reinforces the positive feelings I need to stay motivated throughout the day, regardless of setbacks and challenging circumstances. That continual motivation and the feelings that fuel it are crucial to manifest what I’m asking for.

As you visualize, it’s important that you crank up your energy. I mean, really get into this! It won’t have much of an effect if you’re casually looking at yourself in the picture. You must enthusiastically be in the picture as if it’s really happening. Feel the excitement. Include every detail. Feel and experience the emotions as if you already have what you want.

If your desire is to create a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/17-things-every-strong-relationship-has-in-common">meaningful relationship</a>, you might want to picture the two of you laughing or holding hands walking on a beach. Perhaps you can envision eating dinner together at a cozy, romantic restaurant and having a meaningful conversation. The point is to feel the excitement of already having the relationship you want. For a little extra oomph, give thanks for the outcome you desire and know that it might take a while, but somehow, some way, you will eventually meet the right person.

It doesn’t end there. The next step is to continue visualizing your desire with passion and enthusiasm throughout the day. This step is important because it keeps negative emotions such as fear of failure, doubt and uncertainty from interfering with your intended desire. Also, know that you have to take action. In other words, you can’t have a meaningful conversation at a cozy restaurant unless you are motivated enough to set the date, time and make a reservation. Remember what Einstein said, “Nothing happens until something moves.” I say, “Your life won’t happen unless you move.” So move! Do your part! Take action! Get motivated! Stay motivated! And don’t give up!

When I made the decision to shift careers from being a stand-up comedian to become a motivational speaker, I didn’t expect to wake up the next morning and say, “OK, when do I speak?” That’s ridiculous, of course. I was well aware that action needed to be taken. I knew I had to reinforce my foundation of faith and confidence. There was a well-thought-out step-by-step process involved.

Here’s the thing, dear reader. At various times throughout the day, during the process of creating my speaking career, I visualized myself on stage speaking to thousands of people. I envisioned the audience laughing at my jokes and funny stories and acknowledging my message. I saw myself getting standing ovations and people thanking me for giving them hope. I envisioned agencies and clients from all venues calling my office wanting to book me. I saw my calendar being filled with speaking engagements. I envisioned my fees and product sales increasing. I saw my team and agents calling me and saying, “You have another offer!” It took time and a great deal of dedication before I started reaping the benefits of my labor, but I did eventually get the things that I envisioned. And it’s still paying off.

Take a few moments every day—throughout the day—to visualize the things you desire. Feel them with your heart and soul. See them in your mind as if they’re really happening. Include every detail. Feel and experience the emotions as if you already have what you want.

As an attitude adjuster by profession, people will ask me, “What is the most valuable lesson you have learned about <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/what-happy-successful-optimistic-people-know-about-life">success and happiness</a>?” My response, without hesitating, is always, “Never use your words to describe a challenging situation. Rather, use your words to change your perspective on a challenging situation.”

We need to be especially careful about the words we speak out loud when things aren’t going the way we want. It’s true that what you think is what you get, and what you say out loud in the midst of troubling times has even a greater impact.

And although it may be possible to convince yourself that you’re trying to stay positive when the situation is really calling for some good old-fashioned angst, what you say out loud during those times could very well make the difference in how long you remain in that situation and how deeply it affects you.

If you’re always thinking about how badly life is treating you and telling whoever will stand still long enough about how you can’t get a fair shake, you will always feel miserable. Feeling good is the fuel that drives motivation. That is always your choice and your responsibility. This will help you make that choice.

First, you need a regular routine to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-clever-tricks-to-trigger-positive-emotions">get in the feeling good habit</a>. Begin by creating a daily foundation for a mindset that’s open to you feeling good. Start this right before you go to sleep. Believe it or not, the mood you’re in when you wake up has a lot to do with what was on your mind before you closed your eyes to sleep.

Your subconscious mind runs 90 to 95 percent of your life. That’s primarily why so many people wake up with no passion and little enthusiasm. What I mean is that their subconscious has been <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/top-of-mind-6-ways-to-keep-your-ego-in-check">taken over by the ego</a> and forces of negativity. The remedy for this is to retrain your subconscious with habits that will give you the attitude and motivation to live a successful, happier life.

So every night as you’re getting ready to go to bed, spend a few minutes thinking of all of the things that you were grateful for during that day. This is especially important when you’ve had a bad day and it seems as though there is nothing to give thanks for.

I understand this can take work, especially when negative emotions are getting the best of you, but this is important. Sometimes <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/5-ways-smart-people-influence-themselves">you just have to push yourself.</a> Maybe you closed a deal with a business associate or had a few laughs with a friend. Maybe you received a compliment. Or maybe you did something nice for someone or someone did something nice for you and it lifted your spirits. It can be as small as a snack you enjoyed or a parking space you snagged. Believe me, you’ll come to find that it’s well worth the effort because you will be creating an attitude of gratitude, a habit that’s conducive to making you feel good and enjoy your life.

As you close your eyes to sleep, imagine what it would be like if you had all of the things you wanted in life. It’s important to imagine these as if you already have them. I want you to really get into this. Got it?

But some people say the key to a successful marriage is to understand your partner. Are you kidding me? Understand your partner? Whether you are a man or a woman, you will never be able to understand your partner. The only thing that you have to understand about your partner is that there are things about them that you will never understand. If you can understand that, then you will have better understanding. Do you understand?

I’ve been married to my wife for 26 years. Until this day, I can’t understand why I have to get in trouble for dreams that she has. Allow me to elaborate.

I wake up in the morning, look at my wife and say, “Good morning.” Her response to me is, “Don’t you good morning me!”

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

She says, “I just had a dream that you had an affair with another woman!”

Guys, believe me, your response should never be, “Really? What did she look like? I just want to know if it’s the same dream I’ve been having.”

Use your imagination. Observe your kids, especially as you start your day. They are without a doubt the funniest people on earth. Watch how they grow up to be just like you.

My son thinks he’s a comedian. When he was in grade school, he was always making people laugh, including the teachers. But he didn’t know when to turn it off. This started to become a problem. Anger is a very powerful force to be reckoned with, and people respond to it in different ways. Some respond with aggression and want to hit something or someone, scream, curse, break something, blame someone, throw a tantrum, or tell someone off. Others try to repress their anger. They tell themselves that they’re decent people and will try various methods to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/how-to-control-your-anger">control their emotions;</a> they count to 10, deny it, bury it, ignore it or medicate it. Neither of these alternatives are conducive to a healthy outcome.

I believe anger is our emotional radar detector, a voice, a warning signal, a plea for help, telling us that something is not right in our world—that we are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-these-5-questions-will-define-where-youre-going-in-life">going in the wrong direction</a>. Allow me to explain.

Growing up, I acquired many fears and limiting beliefs about the world and myself. For a great part of my life, I believed circumstances determined my fate. I didn’t understand I could have chosen a better way. My experiences with adults, teachers and my peers led me to believe that I simply wasn’t good enough or smart enough. After being saddled with the dubious high school honor of “Least Likely to Succeed,” after being told by a guidance counselor that I didn’t have the intelligence to make it through college, I wore the label “loser” with a certain amount of twisted pride.

But years of feeling inadequate, of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-how-to-stop-listening-to-the-negative-voice-in-your-head">habitual negative thinking,</a> eventually created labels that led me to believe that dreams were the luxury of only a fortunate few and I wasn’t one of them. I woke up every morning waiting for my life to happen. If anyone needed an attitude adjustment, it was me.

The real danger set in when I left home and tried to make it on my own. Looking back at my life, I can see how and why I sabotaged so many opportunities. Unaware, I carried with me many of my unresolved negative labels and limiting beliefs. As a result, I kept <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-mistakes-successful-people-dont-make-again">reliving the same mistakes</a> and failures over and over again. I knew I had the talent, but I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t getting my big break.

My perceived limitations had me confused. My fears paralyzed me. In fact, I figured out that I had a fear of failure and a fear of success. (Talk about not being able to make up your mind.) Sounds crazy, but I never said I was normal.

Eventually I responded to the fear with both aggressive and repressed anger. Regardless of what form it took, anger was controlling my life. At the time, I didn’t know I had options on how to respond or that I could have created <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/how-to-construct-an-empowering-reality">a healthier belief system</a> simply by consistently shifting my focus and way of thinking. I honestly was clueless to what I know now: that you empower yourself when you realize that anger is not meant to be acted out, but to be acted upon. It is not to be repressed, but revealed. You have to listen to the underlying message that fear and the anger that’s associated with it are trying to tell you

Nothing seems to affect these animals. I once saw a cat run full force smack into a wall, bounce off, land on its feet and look at me as if to say, “What? I knew it was there! I meant to do that!” and then walk away. “Ba-Da-Bing! Meow!”

Have you ever told a cat to go fetch something? It just sits there and gives you another one of those looks. “Hey, let’s get something straight. I don’t do fetch. You want something, you tell your best friend Rover to get it. I’m busy. I’ve got company comin’ over. And when they get here, don’t embarrass me with this ‘Here kitty, kitty’ crap. I got a name! You use it! Even If it is Fluffy! You use it!”&nbsp;

The bottom line is this: Cats live on their own terms. Nobody tells them what to do. They defy the odds. And they <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-ways-to-bounce-back-after-a-mistake">bounce back</a> and have resilience. All of us could use that same kind of attitude!

I put a great deal of time and energy into <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/videos/youtube/the-pursuit-5-steps-to-create-your-dream-career-the-jon-acuff-way">building my career</a>. And there is always something that needs to be done: new projects, books, podcasts, radio and TV interviews, webinars, and customizing programs for clients. The more I complete, the more in-demand as a speaker I am. Now don’t misunderstand me; this is not a complaint. I really do love and enjoy what I do. It feels good to provide needed services, and I feel that I do them well. The important thing is what I choose to do when I’m not in front of an audience or working on new programs.

After a lifetime of worry, frustration and disappointment in little shortcomings, I am now beginning to understand how valuable that time in between is. I call it my time. And with my time, I simply<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/podcast/ep-25-secrets-for-a-happy-brain"> do what makes me happy</a>.

The amount of my time isn’t as important as the attention I give it. In other words, it’s quality time that matters, not quantity. This time can be a day or a few weeks at home in between bookings, or it can be a simple luxury of staying overnight at a hotel before I give a morning speech. Whatever the amount of time I have, it’s what I choose to do with my time that <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-how-to-live-a-life-of-value">brings value to it</a>. I try to make conscious choices to feed my soul and complement parts of myself that need fostering and make me happy.

For example, whether I’m home or on the road, I always find time to exercise. Always! It simply makes me feel great physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Sometimes when I’m away from home, I might choose to walk through a historical neighborhood. I discovered years ago that walking is a form of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/meditation-your-way">meditation that always puts my mind at ease</a>. Quite often, as I’m walking, solutions to problems hit me with such clarity that I have to laugh. (Seriously, try that the next time you’re all stressed out over a problem at work.) Or perhaps I might choose to stay in my hotel room and take a nap or read a book. Both are something I am accustomed to. Something else I love to do when I’m traveling is meet with friends for dinner and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-keys-to-a-flawless-conversation">indulge in great conversation</a>, nonstop laughter and, of course, a great bottle of wine (or two or three). Don’t give me that look! There’s always a designated driver.

These are just some of the things that complete me as a person. To you, they might seem simple, unproductive or even boring. But to me, they are essential to my well-being. My time is when I let go of the hectic world and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/john-c-maxwell-4-steps-to-create-balance-in-your-life">find my balance</a>. Within this time, I have a profound understanding that I don’t have to push life so much in order to experience it harmoniously, to be guided more by intuition than ambition. Some of my greatest insights have come to me when I have decided to simply break away and pay attention to who I am.

Your job is not who you are; it’s what you do. What you do for a living might be a sacred part of who you are, but on its own merits, it doesn’t complete you. There’s so much more to you than what you do to earn a paycheck. Deep down, you know this is true.

By all means, dedicate a great amount of time toward achieving your professional goals. But for your sake, learn how to let go and honor those other sacred parts of yourself. If you do, don’t be surprised if you find that you are more passionate, enthusiastic and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/4-science-backed-reasons-youre-not-motivated-at-work">motivated at work</a>. Allow yourself the freedom to use your time to love, laugh and learn. Find your balance! Find your joy! Live your life with passion! Don’t be afraid to shift your life in the direction of the things that you value and that nourish your soul. Shift your focus when you are feeling fragmented and upset to bring yourself back to your higher sense of being, and shift your priorities to allow yourself to focus on what matters.

Because when that shift happens, your life changes. And trust me, it’s for the better.

Or as I like to call it, “the bigmouth inside your head.”

The bigmouth in your head is a continuous flow of fear-based thoughts, defensive emotions and beliefs that have been built from past experiences.

Why can’t I ever get a break?
I will never be able to handle this.
What’s the use? No one cares anyway.

Awareness is the first step to stifling the voice in your head and turning around a compulsively negative mindset. Once you recognize the dismal reality you are creating for yourself, you can step back and observe where it is taking you. If you don’t like where it is taking you (and you won’t, once you understand the consequences), take comfort in the fact that you have the power to change it. You do this by <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/say-this-not-that-7-responses-for-common-negative-thoughts">going on the offensive and counterattacking with empowering thoughts and words</a> that instill hope, faith, confidence, courage and determination.

Whatever it is that is bringing you down, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/podcast/ep-17-face-your-fears">acknowledge the fear</a> that represents it and immediately go on the offensive and talk back to your fears with a bombardment of emotionally charged words. Don’t be afraid to verbalize this.

If you’re worried about someone catching you talking to yourself and thinking you’re crazy, just remember the last time you looked in the mirror as you told off your boss. Hop in the car or take a walk so you can really give this voice a piece of your mind.

When I made the decision to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-simple-steps-to-a-happier-you">make happiness my No. 1 priority every day</a>, I became aware of a whole new world of possibilities. Healthier choices instantly presented themselves. I learned how to make myself feel better when times were tough, simply by shifting my thoughts and focusing on something that would lift my spirits. I began to create habits and develop mindsets that enabled me to live more in the moment and enjoy myself during the process. That doesn’t mean that I’m happy 24/7. I was well aware there would always be challenges.

Because let’s face it, there will always be unexpected challenges and problems to manage. Even the very fortunate among us <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/8-ways-successful-people-overcome-setbacks">experience setbacks</a> and suffering of some kind at different stages in our lives. Challenges and stress are a part of life. As Frank Sinatra sang, “That’s life. That’s what all the people say. You’re ridin’ high in April, shot down in May.” (He also sang, “Doobie, doobie, doo,” but the relevance of that lyric totally escapes me.)

My point is that you can experience unease, sadness and pain at times and still be happy overall. Your overall happiness is determined by what you choose to focus on in the world from day to day. That’s the key.

For example, a sunny blue sky can have scattered clouds passing by. To some, it’s still an overall sunny blue sky. To others, it’s a sky marred by clouds. You need to ask yourself what you focus on most in your world. Do you focus on the sunny blue sky or do you give your attention to the clouds? I’m not asking you to think literally, as if you were a meteorologist (unless you are one of course), but as an individual with an overall worldview. Your honest answer will be in direct relation to the degree of your overall happiness. If you fit into the category of someone who focuses on the clouds, simply by shifting your focus to the bright blue sky, your degree of happiness is immediately elevated. That concept applies to everything in your life and is otherwise known as “<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-practical-tips-to-achieve-a-positive-mindset">seeing the glass half full</a>.”

Being the astute observer that I am, I can pretty much tell a person’s degree of overall happiness on any given day just by asking a very simple question: “How are you doing today?” Their answers will vary greatly from a high degree of happiness to a very low degree of happiness.

The responses we give can vary from day to day, depending on our circumstances and, more important, how we view them. Regardless of your current overall degree of happiness, I want you to ask yourself, Do I want to be happier than I am? I can only assume yes, otherwise why would you be reading this? Before you answer, let me tell you there are no coincidences in life. Everything happens for a reason. You are reading this for a reason. And the reason why positive momentum ceases is because people are focusing all of their energy on what isn’t working and all of the things that need to done in order to make it work.

This type of chaotic thinking leaves people with no mental room for positive thoughts to seep through, so they devise healthier alternatives. In other words, your life or your business will not work if you keep thinking about what’s wrong or what isn’t working.

In that moment of awareness, you enter into a whole new world of possibilities and opportunities, where you can choose healthier responses. In this world of possibility and opportunity, you are now free to gradually shift your focus to things and thoughts that will gradually lift you up and make you feel better. And that’s what you want, isn’t it?
