"You probably haven't made a single <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-ways-to-leave-your-job-and-start-your-career/">authentic career choice</a> in your life,” says Misha Rubin in this week’s episode. And he speaks from experience—Rubin got a degree in computer science without thinking about whether that was what he actually wanted. He stayed with Ernst &amp; Young for 15 years, even becoming a partner at the company. But while he wasn’t happy, he continued to stay—after all, he had no other plans to follow and three children at home. But one January afternoon, during a business meeting, he finally listened to the quiet voice in his head that had been telling him he and his career weren’t in alignment with each other, and he <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/starting-a-new-chapter-in-life-here-are-7-ways-to-make-the-change-positive/">decided to take a leap</a>.



Now, Rubin has built a career out of helping others <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-steps-to-turn-your-passion-into-your-profession/">make their own changes</a>—without taking the same kind of risk he himself took—and in the process, he identified three factors which influence the types of careers people choose: “other people’s opinions,” “circumstances” and “inertia.” Rubin’s familiarity with all three, as well as the other aspects of his “career blueprint,” has served him well in his new career.

Kiersten and Julien Saunders’ story spans nearly 10 years, from meeting at the company where they both worked to breaking up and making up, and beginning a career together in the very field that had ended their relationship in the first place—and that was only the beginning. Kiersten recommends YouTube and books, but she also advises people to begin creating things themselves, once they have a baseline of knowledge to work off of. At that point, other people can comment on your work, and you can begin to ask more questions to get the help you need. It is equally important <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/adjust-your-money-mindset-with-anthony-oneal/">to develop your mindset</a>—that is, to become aware of the things, both mental and in the world around you, that are dragging you down.

Stay ahead in business: strategies and insights for success

Rachel Glass has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but only recently has she gotten a chance to put it to use. After graduating from business school in 2006, Glass worked in hedge fund fundraising for about 10 years. It was a financially secure job, one which allowed her to have a relatively entrepreneurial role even in the financial sector. Entertainment company EVGLE didn’t start up all at once—instead, it built up over time, first with Victor Burnett and the puzzling renter of his studio, then an entertainment attorney called in to help their fledgling business. Over time, the pieces slotted into place <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-keys-to-a-successful-business/">to create the rising success</a> the company has become.&nbsp;



“[Blxst’s] vision was to bring together a bunch of eagles to be able to come together—people who could stand alone on their own, but also come together and make this great transformer figure,” Burnett says in today’s episode. And come together they did. Now, as their company <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-scale-your-business-a-guide-for-new-entrepreneurs/">continues its growth</a>, Burnett and Karl Fowlkes are excited to have been able to bring on new staff, including a creative director and various advisers and consultants.&nbsp;

Our identities and lives thrive on stories. But these are stories that we adopt through our families, culture and experiences, which can make them self-limiting, Chuck Wisner says. This week on Brilliant Thoughts with Tristan Ahumada, Wisner asserts that our stories are not our truths. Rather, our stories break down into facts, emotions and opinions.&nbsp;



He outlines four questions that can be used to process these stories: What are my desires? What are my concerns? What power issues are at play? And what rules and codes of conduct are shaping my opinions and judgements?&nbsp;



“Authority issues are a huge problem in business,” Wisner says. Leaders often feel like they need to have all the answers, but should feel comfortable being in <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-techniques-to-never-stop-learning/">a constant state of learning</a>. We've lost the art of asking questions; we have to rebalance <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/finding-your-voice-advocating-and-negotiating-for-yourself-as-a-woman-in-the-workplace/">how we advocate</a> and how we inquire, Wisner explains. He suggests that leaders speak last in a meeting, instead of first. Another strategy is asking three questions before <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-ways-successful-people-make-smart-decisions/">making a decision</a>.&nbsp;



Instead of thinking of stories as truth, he suggests thinking about behaviors <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/if-you-want-to-change-your-life-change-what-you-think/">and thoughts as patterns</a>, which are learned through standards that we have unconsciously adopted. But we can recognize our patterns and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-change-your-habits/">work toward changing them</a>.&nbsp;

Learn About the History of Entrepreneurship with Derek Lidow

Entrepreneurship has a longer history than you may think. Derek Lidow, a Princeton University professor, has found evidence of entrepreneurship from 9,000 years ago—a mini workshop used by hunter-gatherers to produce beads and pendants for trade. In 4,000 BC, there was even a Silicon Valley-like village that produced copper tools.&nbsp;



This week, Lidow and Brilliant Thoughts host Tristan Ahumada discuss the fascinating history of entrepreneurship, as well as how entrepreneurs work collectively in swarms, simplifying control, building bedrock companies and taking responsibility for the negative consequences of innovation.



Lidow’s interest in the history of entrepreneurship began when he himself <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-steps-to-go-from-idea-to-entrepreneur/">was an entrepreneur</a> and felt as though <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/what-i-wish-i-knew-about-entrepreneurship-before-i-got-started/">the advice he got</a> from others was based on personal experience rather than a true foundation. As such, when he was asked to create a class on entrepreneurship for Princeton, he began digging into history in order to learn how far back the practice of entrepreneurship extended. Now, he discusses the criteria by which he defines entrepreneurship, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-things-effective-leaders-do-to-encourage-innovation/">the concept of innovation</a> and how it is <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/18-out-of-the-box-ideas-to-spark-creative-inspiration/">separate from creativity</a>, and why <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/your-business-failed-whats-next/">some entrepreneurs fail</a>.&nbsp;
