Within months, he and co-developer Bob Frankston released <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VisiCalc">VisiCalc</a> — the first electronic spreadsheet — and what had routinely taken financial analysts most of a day could now be done in minutes. A significant share of Apple II computers sold in the following year were purchased specifically to run the software. The accountants and analysts who learned VisiCalc early didn't just work faster. Forty-seven years later, the same pattern is unfolding at a speed and scale that makes the spreadsheet revolution look glacial. Between November 2025 and March 2026 — fewer than five months — at least six major AI agent platforms launched or entered public preview, from Anthropic's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.anthropic.com/product/claude-cowork">Cowork</a> to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://openclaw.ai/">OpenClaw</a> to NVIDIA's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/ai/nemoclaw/">NemoClaw</a>. Unlike the chatbots that preceded them, these are autonomous systems that execute multi-step workflows — managing files, filling forms, coordinating across applications, running for hours without human supervision. OpenClaw, the open-source entrant, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.getpanto.ai/blog/openclaw-ai-platform-statistics">accumulated hundreds of thousands of GitHub stars</a> in its first months, surpassing React's entire ten-year total. A <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.pwc.com/us/en/tech-effect/ai-analytics/ai-agent-survey.html">PwC survey</a> conducted in April 2025 found that 79 percent of organizations were already adopting AI agents. By late 2025, according to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://learn.g2.com/enterprise-ai-agents-report">G2 research</a>, 57 percent had agents in production. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-08-26-gartner-predicts-40-percent-of-enterprise-apps-will-feature-task-specific-ai-agents-by-2026-up-from-less-than-5-percent-in-2025">Gartner projects</a> that 40 percent of enterprise applications will embed task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5 percent in 2025. The infrastructure is arriving. The question worth asking is not whether you will use these tools. It is whether you will understand them before or after the moment when understanding would have changed an outcome. ## What the brain does with knowledge it doesn't yet need On December 7, 1854, Louis Pasteur delivered an address as the new Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lille. He was discussing the Danish physicist Oersted's discovery of electromagnetism — a finding that came while Oersted was preparing an unrelated classroom demonstration. Pasteur's observation has been quoted so often it has been flattened into a bumper sticker, but the original words carry a sharper point: "In the fields of observation, chance only favors the mind which is prepared." Pasteur wasn't offering a motivational aphorism. He was describing a neurological fact he couldn't yet name — though the success writers who came after him, from Orison Swett Marden to Napoleon Hill, would build entire philosophies around the same observation. In 1949, researchers Giuseppe Moruzzi at the University of Pisa and Horace Magoun at Northwestern University identified the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10203024/">reticular activating system</a>, a network of neurons in the brainstem that acts as the brain's filter for incoming sensory data. By one widely cited estimate — from Danish science writer Tor Norretranders' <em>The User Illusion</em> — the human nervous system processes roughly 11 million bits of sensory information per second. Conscious awareness handles approximately 40 to 50. The RAS determines which signals make it through — and its filtering criteria are shaped by what you already know, what you're focused on, and what your brain has been primed to recognize. This is the neurological mechanism behind a common experience: you learn a new word and suddenly hear it everywhere; you decide to buy a specific car and begin noticing that model on every highway. The information was always present. The filter changed. Kevin Dunbar, a cognitive scientist at the University of Maryland who has spent decades studying how scientific discoveries actually happen in working laboratories, has documented that <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/257189937_Fortune_and_the_Prepared_Mind">30 to 50 percent of scientific discoveries</a> involve some element of accident. But Dunbar's critical finding is that serendipity is not random. Scientists must know what is expected before they can recognize something surprising. When a problem arises that the tool could solve, the prepared person doesn't need to go searching. The pattern match happens automatically, below conscious deliberation, at the speed of recognition rather than the speed of research. ## The compound advantage nobody measures The VisiCalc story is useful because it illustrates something that data rarely captures. The advantage of knowing a tool before you need it is not simply that you can use the tool when the moment arrives. It is that your brain begins generating pattern matches between the tool's capabilities and your daily work, continuously and without effort, from the moment you acquire the knowledge. Herbert Simon, the Nobel laureate in economics and pioneer of artificial intelligence research at Carnegie Mellon, demonstrated this effect through his landmark <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0010028573900042">1973 study on chess expertise</a> with William Chase. Masters and novices were shown chess positions for five seconds and asked to reproduce them. Masters recalled the positions with remarkable accuracy — not because they had better memories, but because decades of study had given them a library of roughly 50,000 to 100,000 meaningful patterns. They were not memorizing positions. They were recognizing configurations they had seen before. On random board arrangements that violated chess logic, masters performed no better than beginners. The advantage was entirely a function of prior study meeting a structured environment. K. Anders Ericsson and Walter Kintsch extended this finding in a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://psycnet.apa.org/record/1995-24067-001">1995 paper in <em>Psychological Review</em></a>, demonstrating that experts develop what they called "long-term working memory" — the ability to rapidly store and retrieve complex information through elaborated patterns built over years of deliberate practice. Those patterns don't sit idle. They become part of the prediction engine Friston described — generating matches between capabilities and opportunities in the background, without conscious effort, twenty-four hours a day. This is what makes the advantage compound. A person who learns about AI agents in March doesn't just have a six-month head start over someone who learns in September. They have six months of subconscious pattern-matching that has already identified dozens of applications, refined their mental model through small experiments, and built the kind of intuitive fluency that shows up in meetings as the ability to say "I know exactly what could solve this" while others are still Googling. ## Tools become part of the mind that uses them The neuroscience goes deeper than pattern recognition. In 1996, Atsushi Iriki and colleagues at Toho University School of Medicine in Japan published a study in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8951846/"><em>NeuroReport</em></a> that changed how scientists understand the relationship between tools and cognition. The generation of AI agents now reaching the market represents the most powerful class of cognitive extensions most knowledge workers have ever encountered. Anthropic's Dispatch lets a user send a task from their phone and have an AI agent execute it on their desktop computer — reading email, managing calendars, coordinating across Slack and Gmail — while the user is elsewhere. Perplexity Computer deploys nineteen specialized AI models as a coordinated team, selecting the right model for each subtask and running for hours on complex workflows. In the precise language of the neuroscience, they qualify as extensions of the cognitive system of the person who wields them. But only if the person knows they exist. And only if they've studied them enough for the brain's prediction engine to incorporate their capabilities into its model of what is possible. ## The observation that preceded the equation The neuroscience is recent. The underlying insight is not. <em>SUCCESS</em> Magazine was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orison_Swett_Marden">founded in 1897</a> by Orison Swett Marden with a mission to reach people and give them what he called a new philosophy of life. The philosophy, in every generation, has carried the same premise: working on yourself is the highest-leverage activity available. Napoleon Hill, whose work with W. Clement Stone shaped decades of the magazine's editorial identity, described the mechanism in terms that have aged better than he could have known. In <em>Think and Grow Rich</em>, Hill wrote that when a person is truly ready for a thing, it puts in its appearance — often in a different form and from a different direction than expected. He called it Infinite Intelligence. He described the subconscious mind as a faculty that, once properly prepared, would translate intention into recognition of opportunity. In 2010, Karl Friston published a mathematical framework describing the brain as a prediction engine that minimizes surprise through increasingly refined internal models. In 1996, Atsushi Iriki showed that tools become neurologically incorporated into the body's self-representation. In 1973, Herbert Simon demonstrated that expertise converts raw information into meaningful patterns that the expert recognizes without conscious deliberation. Hill didn't have the equations. He had the observation. The science caught up. The AI agents arriving now — Cowork, Dispatch, Perplexity Computer, OpenClaw, KimiClaw, NemoClaw, and the dozens that will follow them — are not technologies you need to master today. They are technologies you need to study today. The distinction matters. Mastery comes from use, and use comes from need. But the compound advantage — the one that operates below the surface, that turns chance encounters into recognized opportunities, that makes the right answer visible the instant the question forms — that comes from preparation. The edge in 2026 won't belong to the people who work the longest hours. It will belong to those who built richer mental models of what is now possible — and let their brains do the rest. Pasteur named the principle in 1854. A century and a half of neuroscience has explained the mechanism.
