Stay ahead in business: strategies and insights for success

<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/why-you-should-start-your-own-business-today/">Becoming a business owner</a> is an adventure into new, exciting territory. It takes a special blend of dreams, business sense and looking within for what matters most to you in order to succeed in starting a new business.</p>



<p>If you watch <em>Shark Tank</em>, you know that entrepreneurs go in front of the expert panel looking for funding. It’s great entertainment, but it’s also a learning opportunity to see if these entrepreneurs have matched their dreams with a plan that makes others want to invest in their new business.</p>



<p>Now that I’ve been an entrepreneur for 19 years, I get lots of calls for advice and tips on how to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-start-a-business-in-a-day/">start a new business successfully</a>. In truth, there is no one easy answer. But if you can answer these questions, it can help you make sure starting a business is not only the right decision, but that it’s the right time to do so.</p>



<h2 id="h-1-why-do-you-want-to-start-a-business">1. Why do you want to start a business?</h2>



<p>Know the deep-down, real reason you want to create this new business. It must be more than having a career or job you want to leave behind. <a href="https://www.betterup.com/blog/how-motivation-works-in-the-brain" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motivation comes from what you want</a>, whether that’s the desire to attain something or to avoid a negative outcome, not avoiding something you dislike.</p>



<p>If you are looking for a completely flexible schedule or a quick financial payoff, talk with other business owners and get a realistic picture of what’s in store before you take the leap. Be honest with yourself and make sure <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/9-tips-for-overcoming-setbacks-from-9-resilient-entrepreneurs/">your reasons will carry you through</a> the twists and turns you’ll experience as an entrepreneur.</p>



<h2 id="h-2-why-does-the-marketplace-need-your-product-or-service">2. Why does the marketplace need your product or service?</h2>



<p>Know why your new product or service will meet a need in the market. It doesn’t have to be one of a kind, but find something that will distinguish your business from the rest in very real, practical ways.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-how-will-you-get-your-clients-or-customers">3. How will you get your clients or customers?</h2>



<p>Determine where your customers will come from and how they will hear about your business. If you have a product or service that needs lots of customers in order for you to reach your financial goals, then you’ll need a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescommunicationscouncil/2022/12/19/16-effective-marketing-strategies-to-boost-sales-in-2023/?sh=5d41f0e729d7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-volume marketing plan</a>.</p>



<p>As an example, if you're starting a jewelry business or a retail store, you’ll need the continued awareness and business of lots of people in order to succeed. In contrast, if you're starting a consulting or niche expert business, you’ll likely place a greater emphasis on <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-build-your-first-client-base/">growing key relationships</a> with target clients and those who will <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/referrals-over-customers-and-other-key-insights-all-bootstrapping-entrepreneurs-should-know/">recommend you to others</a>.</p>



<p>How you get your customers and how many you’ll need determines how you spend your time and how long it will take to reach your income targets. Knowing this is fundamental to your plan and can help you confirm that your financial goals are realistic.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-what-will-it-be-like-when-you-have-reached-your-desired-state-for-the-business-how-long-will-it-likely-take-to-get-there">4. What will it be like when you have reached your desired state for the business? How long will it likely take to get there?</h2>



<p>Dream. Know your North Star. Your desired state must be unique to you, not just a revenue target. Write down what it will be like, what will be happening and the evidence you’ll see as you begin to reach your target. This vision will be updated over time, but think big and remember you will get there in steps. This clarity will help you make wise short-term decisions and stay motivated.</p>



<p>If you know you’ll have a long ramp-up time before getting your business to that desired state, get started as early as you can. Consider transitioning into your new business by starting it <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/6-tips-for-balancing-a-successful-side-hustle/">while at your current job</a> or before you finish school. </p>



<h2 id="h-5-what-financials-are-essential-for-starting-a-business">5. What financials are essential for starting a business?</h2>



<p>If it looks like, in the best-case scenario for your business in two or three years' time, that it won’t provide a high enough income, then you’ll have to adjust your plan.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Also consider: What is the maximum you want to invest in the first one or two years? Can your business be successful with this investment? Take the time to build out <a href="https://www.business.com/articles/6-elements-of-successful-financial-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a realistic financial plan</a> for your business, and avoid ending up someplace you never intended.</p>



<h2 id="h-6-who-are-your-expert-advisers-to-help-you-make-it-happen">6. Who are your expert advisers to help you make it happen?</h2>



<p>In 2012 I wrote about the need for <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/five-people-you-need-on-your-dream-team/">a blend of advisers</a>—your “dream team”—especially when starting a new business. Build relationships with multiple experts to advise you on marketing, the operational keys for running a business and the marketplace, and include another entrepreneur who can be your wise counsel. Some may be paid advisers, but others should be mentors who offer you guidance.</p>



<p>This gap in knowledge was one of my biggest surprises as an entrepreneur, because there was just so much to know—so much so that, at first, I didn’t even know what I didn’t know. Mentors and advisers were essential in educating me along the way.</p>



<h2 id="h-7-if-anything-were-to-get-in-the-way-of-starting-a-business-what-would-it-be">7. If anything were to get in the way of starting a business, what would it be?</h2>



<p>Answer this honestly. It’s essential to do so if you want to anticipate and plan accordingly.</p>



<p>I’ve heard answers such as “my lack of knowledge about this market,” “my discomfort with selling,” “that I have no investment money” and “second-guessing myself.” If selling your ideas or products makes you uncomfortable and you are about to start a business that will require you to do so, you have some options:</p>



<ul><li>Get help to dramatically improve your skills and your comfort level</li><li>Partner with someone who does this well</li><li>Regroup on your plans</li></ul>



<p>Just don’t overlook this question. Leaving this unaddressed will guarantee the problem will reappear again in the future. This is not as tough as going on <em>Shark Tank</em>, but finding the answers will take some thought and work.</p>



<p>Follow your dreams. Take risks. Be bold. But also make sure to be smart, plan and get the advice you need. It’s not one or the other. This balance of dreaming and planning is what successful business owners do.</p>

<p>If you grew up being told not to make waves, you might want to reconsider your stance on the matter and become a changemaker. </p>



<p>Why should you make waves in your team or organization? Easy: to bring about change that builds momentum, that introduces improvements and opportunities otherwise missed by conforming to the status quo. Change <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/guides/year-of-living-better/how-to-make-the-world-a-better-place" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">makes our world better</a>.</p>



<p>For two years, I researched and interviewed people who have started changes, from sharing food with the homeless to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-steps-to-make-a-splash-with-your-business-idea/">starting a new business</a> and redefining <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-tips-to-improve-team-collaboration/">how teams work together</a>.</p>



<p>I asked trusted colleagues, “Who do you know that’s a Wave Maker?” With their recommendations, I came up with an eclectic and interesting mix of changemakers, including a Major League Baseball manager, a young entrepreneur, a CEO, a community service leader and a recent graduate. I found common threads in how these people <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-change-is-an-invitation-to-think-differently/">think about change</a> and then act upon it.</p>



<p>In my book <a href="https://amzn.to/3HXjyQL" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Make Waves: Be the One to Start Change at Work and in Life</em></a>, I share how to start a wave, but I also define the DNA of a Wave Maker (aka a changemaker). Wave Makers aren’t biologically determined, but I nonetheless saw similar thoughts, actions and behaviors that enabled all of them to start a change, regardless of the situation, scope or scale.</p>



<h2>4 habits of effective changemakers</h2>



<p>So, are you a Wave Maker? Would you like to be? Here are four habits of people who help bring change and how you can implement them in your own life today:</p>



<h3 id="h-1-a-changemaker-asks-what-s-in-it-for-us-not-what-s-in-it-for-me">1. A changemaker asks, ‘What’s in it for us?’—not, ‘What’s in it for me?’</h3>



<p>Wave Makers place more importance on reaching their goal and its impact than on personal recognition. They truly believe their mission will benefit the greater good. They create momentum around an idea that reaches far beyond the self, all with the goal to make work, their community or the world better. This approach keeps motivation high even when setbacks or detours occur.</p>



<p>To implement change, make authentic relationships a top priority. Changemakers place a high priority on the meaningful and diverse connections needed to achieve their goals. Build valuable relationships that will help you learn, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-proven-networking-strategies-of-successful-entrepreneurs/">create strong networks</a> and find meaning in your work.</p>



<h3>2. They persist while adapting to new information.</h3>



<p>Changemakers have a healthy balance of determination toward a goal and ability to adjust as they learn new information. Not deterred by setbacks, they are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-tips-to-keep-an-open-mind/">open to new ideas</a> and insights. Wave Makers don’t give up on their goals—instead, they remain flexible on how to accomplish it.</p>



<p>To achieve this, believe in your idea and yourself. Grounded in their mission, Wave Makers are both passionate and resourceful. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-art-of-true-confidence/">Adopt this healthy confidence</a>, and allow yourself to realize your goal without getting distracted by future details.</p>



<h3>3. A changemaker never stop learning—even in unlikely situations.</h3>



<p>Wave Makers are always looking to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/want-to-reach-your-potential-then-be-a-learner/">enhance their knowledge</a> and insights. They seek out experts, read, listen and embrace mentoring relationships. They are comfortable taking on new ideas because they are confident that they can learn what they need to know.</p>



<p>As such, Wave Makers aren’t dissuaded by ambiguity. With a bias for action and the instinct to seek expert advice, they can move forward with their plans even when those plans include unknowns.</p>



<p>To be a changemaker, adopt curiosity and be ready to explore. Wave Makers often ask “Why?” and “What if?” Make it your nature to find understanding and apply new ideas to your work.</p>



<h3>4. They engage in positive collaboration based on authenticity and trust.</h3>



<p>Changemakers look for connections and ways to work with others toward a shared goal. They know it is important to share their goals and translate the meaning and purpose of their change to ensure their idea’s survival. </p>



<p>With this in mind, seek to not only <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-steps-to-get-others-interested-in-your-ideas/">engage others with your mission</a>, but to help connect those who are on their own missions.</p>



<p>Making waves is essential for changing your work, your community and your life for the better. Rethink how you define a wave. It’s more than a disruption—it’s a positive force for good. <p>If you are new—or a little rusty—to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-proven-networking-strategies-of-successful-entrepreneurs/">the world of networking</a>, important introductions might feel intimidating or even awkward, especially if you don’t know what to say.</p>



<p>But remember, introductions are just the first step to new friendships. Networking is ultimately <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/connecting-with-people/">about building relationships</a> and reputations. <h2 id="h-10-rules-of-introduction-etiquette">10 rules of introduction etiquette</h2>



<p>So, do you want to nail that next introduction? If so, these are the 10 rules of introduction etiquette you need to remember:</p>



<h3>1. The introducer is using their reputation for <em>you</em>.</h3>



<p>When someone introduces you, they are asking a friend or colleague to make time for you. It’s a personal favor, and not too many requests can be made of any one person. In turn, you become a personal reflection of the introducer, so make this opportunity count—it’s not all about you.</p>



<h3>2. Follow up—quickly—to show good introduction etiquette.</h3>



<p>When an introduction is made, proper etiquette is to move promptly, not only as a sign of appreciation but to ensure your new contact remembers the introduction. In business, two weeks is an eternity and a thousand things have flown by since. A delay can also unintentionally communicate that the introduction isn’t that important to you or that you have no sense of urgency, neither of which is helpful.</p>



<h3>3. Aim for an in-person intro.</h3>



<p>Not every introduction will have time to meet you in person, but try for face-to-face meetings when possible. Nothing, not even a great email back-and-forth, replaces an in-person conversation.</p>



<h3>4. Your schedule is secondary.</h3>



<p>Introduction etiquette means that you adapt your schedule to theirs—don’t expect the other way around. Be willing to meet before work and close to their office. Never ask them to come to you, because you are the one asking for the favor.</p>



<h3>5. Prepare for your meeting.</h3>



<p>Know who you are meeting in advance by researching your new contact before you get there. You’ll not only look prepared, but with a better idea of what to say and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/use-these-7-tips-to-boost-your-confidence/">the extra confidence</a> that comes with knowing who you’re talking to, you’ll have a much more productive and meaningful discussion.</p>



<h3>6. Know the ‘ask’ to show proper introduction etiquette.</h3>



<p>Don’t spend your meeting hoping that the person you’ve just met will know what to do or how to help you if you can’t even articulate it yourself. Figure out what you want, then narrow your request as much as you can. Say something like, “My goal is to connect with people in the financial services industry in New York,” or “I’d appreciate your advice on finding an agent for my nonfiction book targeted at teenagers.” Take it as far as you can.</p>



<h3>7. Work on a relationship, not a transaction.</h3>



<p>Don’t outsmart yourself and determine who is “worth your time.” Even the person who doesn’t have a current job opening might have the next perfect introduction for you or decide to create a brand-new position based on your conversation. Networking and introductions are organic, not formulaic.</p>



<h3>8. Show gratitude.</h3>



<p>You were the recipient of two favors, so send <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/29/style/thank-you-notes-guide.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a personal thank-you note</a> right after your meeting to both the contact and your introducer. Other people have taken time from their busy day to help you, and a simple thank-you note is the proper etiquette to show your appreciation for the introduction and strengthen the connection.</p>



<h3>9. Stay in touch.</h3>



<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/is-linkedin-premium-worth-it/">Send a LinkedIn request</a> to your new contact—but don’t use the automated LinkedIn note of “I’d like to add you to my professional network.” Instead, add a personal comment referencing your meeting. Additionally, look for other ways to stay connected after your first meeting—follow them on Twitter and stay on top of your email, for example. When you are asking for help, you’ve got to stay on top of it and make sure no opportunity passes you by.</p>



<h3>10. You can’t just be a taker—it' not proper etiquette for new introductions.</h3>



<p>We all know those people in our network who only call when they’re looking for a new job, then hide away until the next time they need help. Do a favor for your contacts by asking, “What can I do?” You may, for example, become the introducer in turn, making introductions that are valuable to<em> </em>them.</p>



<p>I once spoke to an entrepreneurial class at Southern Methodist University. After the class, a student came up to introduce himself and thank me for coming. He also told me that he knew another respected author in my space and offered to introduce us. I received a LinkedIn request that night with a personal note thanking me again for visiting his class.</p>

<p>The new year can be an opportunity for a new beginning, a new chance to reach your goals. But will you actually take the chance to start over, to aim for bigger and better things? Surprisingly, many don't. </p>



<p>Only 29% of people planned to make a New Year’s resolution in 2022, according to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-years-resolutions-americans-opinion-poll/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a <em>CBS News </em>poll</a>. Why? Perhaps because the goals can seem too<em> </em>big, the fear of failure stops us or we’ve simply decided resolutions just don’t work.</p>



<p>Why don't they work? Well, look at the top five resolutions for 2023, according to a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/health/mind/new-years-resolutions-statistics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2022 Forbes Health/OnePoll survey</a>:</p>



<ol><li>“Improved mental health (45%)”</li><li>“Improved fitness (39%)”</li><li>“Lose weight (37%)”</li><li>“Improved diet (33%)”</li><li>“Improved finances (30%)”</li></ol>



<p>These are large-scale goals that can’t be reached with one simple habit tweak or schedule adjustment. But even big, bold changes can start with simple ones—if you focus on just today, this week or this month.</p>



<p>While researching for my book <a href="https://amzn.to/3Y5cSX6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Make Waves</em></a>, I found that significant changes often have a small or seemingly inconsequential beginning. First steps are based on the belief that <em>I can do something</em>, <em>I can make this situation better</em> or <em>I see the possibilities here.</em> These beliefs, coupled with a commitment to a small first step—like setting daily coffee meetings with experts to learn about starting a business, or starting a family game night to spend more time together—become significant in retrospect and can lead to change beyond what was first envisioned. ​</p>



<h2 id="h-how-to-reach-your-goals">How to reach your goals</h2>



<p>Thinking big and starting small is a concept that entrepreneurs, innovators and change leaders understand. Here’s how to apply that to your new year and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-create-lasting-change-and-actually-stick-with-your-new-years-resolutions/">show that daunting resolution</a> who’s boss:</p>



<h3 id="h-1-describe-what-you-want-to-be-different-in-your-life">1. Describe what you want to be different in your life.&nbsp;</h3>



<p>What is happening when this change occurs? How are you feeling? How will the experience be different from today?</p>



<p>Describing this can be very motivational, but more importantly, it can help you <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-power-of-visualization/">envision the future</a> beyond surface-level goals. This is your chance to create a unique picture of your intended direction and purpose that will evolve as the year progresses.</p>



<h3 id="h-2-contrast-this-to-your-life-today">2. Contrast this to your life today.&nbsp;</h3>



<p>If your resolution is to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/start-with-the-foundation-the-7-building-blocks-of-a-fulfilling-life/">enjoy life to the fullest</a>, maybe you are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/work-less-do-more/">working too many hours</a> or there’s just too much repetition and routine in your days.</p>



<p>Explore what is causing the gap first. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/why-you-should-focus-on-what-you-can-control/">What is in your control</a>? Probably more than you think. With an open mind, zero in on the things you can influence and begin working on them.</p>



<h3 id="h-3-decide-what-you-can-start-this-month-no-matter-how-small">3. Decide what you can start this month—no matter how small.&nbsp;</h3>



<p>What can I do right now, this month, to move toward reaching my goal of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/take-control-of-your-relationships/">spending more time</a> with my family? The first step may be as simple as going into work earlier two days a week to get home earlier in the evening, or deciding to treat children’s events with the same respect as a client meeting. Make those one or two small changes—and then stick to them.</p>



<h3 id="h-4-ask-what-s-working-for-me">4. Ask: “What’s working for me?”&nbsp;</h3>



<p>We are all motivated in different ways. Explore what’s working for you and what isn’t, and then adjust. Or find someone who has similar goals and compare their successes to yours so you can determine how to revise your plan. Additionally, you can <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190903084051.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">share your intent with others</a> to increase your own commitment.</p>



<h3 id="h-5-repeat-monthly-to-reach-your-goals">5. Repeat monthly to reach your goals. </h3>



<p>Repeat numbers three and four in February, March, April and so on. Ask yourself, “How can I build on that one change I made last month in a way that moves me where I want to be?” Decide to make another small change that adds onto what you have already accomplished.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When goals seem too audacious, our brains will find a good reason not to begin. Our procrastination, perfectionism and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-mel-robbins-guide-to-screwing-up/">fear of failure</a> greet us as we look into the new year. So forget New Year’s resolutions and try monthly resolutions instead, ones that build onto each other. If you commit and layer on month by month, you’ll see notable progress as 2023 closes its doors. But first you have to start.</p>

<li>“I explained to my team that we are putting all of our products online, and this will change priorities and how we work—it will change everything! Yet the next day they went right back to doing what they have always done, as if my conversation with them had never happened!”</li>



<li>“My friend is <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/9-early-bird-tips-for-the-habitually-late/">habitually late</a>. We missed an important meeting yet again. I told him he had to start being on time. He completely agreed and apologized. Today he is late again.”</li>
</ul>



<p>Sound familiar?</p>



<p>Your co-workers, your boss, your team, your customers, your sibling, your friend and your community group all have their own priorities and values. You want to make a change, but despite some of your best efforts, there is no progress.</p>



<p>Why? And what can you do about it? The simple answer: It depends. But first, you must determine what is causing the roadblock.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skills-or-motivation">Skills or motivation?</h2>



<p>As my fellow PeopleResults partner Kirsten Jordan always says: “Skills + Motivation = Behavior Change.”</p>



<p>Knowing if the resistance is driven by <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/want-to-reach-your-potential-then-be-a-learner/">a lack of skill</a> or <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/9-ways-to-motivate-yourself-when-youre-stuck/">a lack of motivation</a> will determine how you can best influence behavior change—including how work is done, improved performance or even the quality of a relationship.</p>



<p>As an example: You want the sales team to sell more of the new services. But selling one well-known product is easier because they know it inside and out, and they don’t understand how the new services work. They aren’t prepared to make the shift.</p>



<p>Likewise, after a tough grade in calculus, you can give your son a motivational speech on the importance of achievement peppered with stories from your high school years. But he is staying up late reworking problems and the math just isn’t making sense to him. For him, lack of motivation isn’t the problem.</p>



<p>Let’s look at skills and motivation a bit more.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-a-lack-of-skills-preventing-change">Is a lack of skills preventing change?</h3>



<p>Skills are the ability to do something well.</p>



<p>The most fundamental questions in any behavior change are these: “Do they know how to do what needs to be done? Do they have the knowledge and experiences that give them needed skills?”</p>



<p>An additional, but just as important, pair of questions is: “What will it take to get them the skills they need? How big is the gap?” The answer might be training or online tutorials, or a mentor or coach working alongside them for a few weeks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In some cases, however, the gap may be too big.</p>



<p>An accountant may have a natural transition into financial planning, as it relies on some of their core skills. Yet that same accountant will likely have no idea where to begin on designing a new brand campaign. The skills are completely different.</p>



<p>One of my clients recently changed her group from behind-the-scenes experts and process managers to become client-facing. She now needs her team <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/13-key-traits-of-strong-professional-relationships/">to build relationships</a>, manage expectations and prioritize based on client goals rather than just manage their own work. The change is a big one. She finally concluded that the gap was too big for some to make. The development of skills would either take too long or, in some cases, may not be possible.</p>



<p>The student that is working hard but still struggling in calculus needs more than a motivational talk from dad. He needs tutoring or time with the teacher to gain the tools and support necessary to develop his skills, because motivation isn’t enough for him to be successful in the class.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-or-is-it-lack-of-motivation">Or is it lack of motivation?</h3>



<p>Motivation is very personal, but our tendency is to motivate others based on our values and what we care about.</p>



<p>Those who joyfully compete and win think that they have learned the key to motivation. It’s winning! In fact, they have learned something about themselves and how they are motivated. Except others may find any competition highly demotivating and completely disengage.</p>



<p>To motivate another person, we must appeal to their individual values and what they care about. In other words, you can’t motivate someone without first understanding them either individually or through common themes of the group.</p>



<p>Dan Ariely, the James B. Duke professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University, “<a href="https://ideas.ted.com/what-motivates-us-at-work-7-fascinating-studies-that-give-insights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">provides evidence</a> that we are also driven by the meaningfulness of our work, by others’ acknowledgement—and by the amount of effort we’ve put in: the harder the task is, the prouder we are.” Yet even these factors look different when you apply them to an individual or smaller group.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.betterup.com/blog/motivating-a-team" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">To motivate others</a>, first consider the values and the issues that matter most to them. No matter how great your influence or persuasion skills, it won’t matter unless you appeal to what others view as important.</p>



<p>Motivation is ultimately a personal decision. You can only influence. And influencing the habitually late friend to change isn’t a problem for you to solve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciding-your-approach-to-make-a-change">Deciding your approach to make a change</h2>



<p>Do your homework if you want to create a change in behavior. Step outside of your own shoes and put on someone else’s. This perspective is step one in determining the actions that can make a difference.</p>



<p>Here are some basic questions to consider before you begin a change that depends upon others changing their behavior:</p>

<li>Do they have the skills they need to change?</li>



<li>How can they develop the skills? Can they be developed in the timeframe needed?</li>



<li>Are they motivated to change?</li>



<li>What matters most to them?</li>



<li>How does this change connect to their values, issues and priorities?</li>



<li>What role can I play in encouraging this change in behavior? How can others help?</li>



<li>Are they <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/3-tips-to-open-your-heart-mind-and-life-to-change">willing to change</a>?</li>
</ol>



<p>And, most importantly: Is a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-master-new-skills/">lack of skill</a> or <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/top-of-mind-how-do-you-find-motivation-when-youre-not-feeling-it">lack of motivation</a> causing the gap?</p>



<p>Knowing this answer is the “unlock” for influencing behavior change at work and in your family, community and relationships.</p>

Get Your Mind Right: 5 Tips for Untangling Your Can’t-Do Mindset

<p>I often ask my clients, “If anything will get in your way, what will it be?” It’s an important question, especially during this time of year.</p>



<p>Holidays can be both joyful and complicated. Expectations are high, and we can feel tangled and conflicted. We daydream things like, <em>The holidays will be perfect! Our family will enjoy special times together! All my gifts will bring joy and excitement! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!</em></p>



<p>And then reality happens. But did the situation really not go well, or did we just expect too much?</p>



<p>Ah, internal roadblocks. These mental obstacles are thoughts no one else can see, but they reappear again and again, and they change our responses and the decisions we make.</p>



<p>We expect too much. We conclude that the problem is bigger than us. We have ideas we never act upon. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/ellevate/2020/12/15/how-to-finally-get-out-of-your-own-way/?sh=a0c5261786c1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">We get in our own way</a>, and the great thing that could have been never was.</p>



<p>I spoke to a college MBA class this week and asked them to share their “favorite” internal obstacles:</p>



<ul><li>Expectations that make anything less of a disappointment</li><li>Perfectionism that makes us feel <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-manage-perfectionism/">we are never quite ready</a></li><li>Risk aversion that convinces us we need to know a little more</li><li>Procrastination that assures us we have plenty of time</li><li><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-art-of-true-confidence/">Lack of confidence</a> and belief in ourselves that tells us we surely don’t know enough</li><li>“I’m too ________” syndrome that keeps us stuck believing that we are too young, too old, too female or too different to know the right answer</li></ul>



<p>In my research about “Wave Makers” for my book <a href="https://amzn.to/3BjHZGj" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Make Waves</em></a>, I discovered that those who started big changes were extraordinary because of their thoughts that drove optimism, resilience, belief in themselves and others, and the confidence to keep learning.</p>



<p>So how do you keep moving forward in a constructive way when your head is telling you <em>no</em>? A very important element of productive thought is staying focused on contributing rather than <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/addiction-and-recovery/201907/stop-seeking-validation-others" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">looking for the approval</a> or acceptance of others. You show up differently when your only objective is to contribute.</p>



<p>Here are tips to stop your head from tripping you up before your next big meeting, event or even a holiday gathering:</p>



<h2 id="h-1-ask-yourself-how-you-can-contribute"><strong>1. Ask yourself how you can contribute.</strong></h2>



<p>You don’t have to be the smartest or the most experienced person in the room to contribute. What do <em>you</em> bring to the party?</p>



<h2 id="h-2-think-about-the-problem-to-solve-not-the-people"><strong>2. Think about the problem to solve, not the people.</strong></h2>



<p>What <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-art-of-problem-solving-4-creative-strategies-to-tackle-your-biggest-obstacles/">problem needs to be solved</a> or what opportunity is there to pursue? Keep your mind there. This keeps your energy on the results. I loved the recent advice I heard for new graduates: Rather than focusing on the job you want, focus on the problems you want to solve.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-stop-seeking-approval-or-validation"><strong>3. Stop seeking approval or validation.</strong></h2>



<p>Not everyone will agree with you or love your ideas or suggestions. Don’t expect appreciation for being a contributor when that is what you are supposed to do.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-don-t-wait-to-be-asked"><strong>4. Don’t wait to be asked.</strong></h2>



<p>Expect that you have a role to play and that you are there for a reason. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-steps-to-unveiling-your-full-human-power-through-unfocus/">Don’t give your power away</a> by waiting for someone to prompt you to contribute.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-stop-the-comparisons"><strong>5. Stop the comparisons.</strong></h2>



<p>It isn’t helpful to evaluate yourself against others or a situation to how you hoped it would be. Thoughts like <em>they are so much smarter/so much more experienced than me</em> and <em>I’m the youngest person here </em>are self-sabotaging and irrelevant. So is hanging on to the thought that <em>I pictured this so differently</em>. These thoughts get in the way of what you are there to do.</p>



<p>Keep your mind set on <em>what can I do?</em> and <em>how can I help?</em>—it’ll keep you focused on <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/why-you-should-focus-on-what-you-can-control/">what you can influence and control</a>.</p>



<p>You are in charge of you. Your actions begin with your thoughts. Get out of your own way and contribute, especially during the busy holiday season.</p>

10 Favors You Can Do for Yourself Every Day

<p>“If you didn’t have a great experience in high school, it’s your fault.” I recently attended a high school graduation where the valedictorian shared this message with the graduating class. Did I hear that correctly? There was a murmur in the crowd. Let’s just say her message didn’t resonate with all of the high school seniors ready for the next chapter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>But after thinking about it, I got her point—with a few caveats. I think she was trying to say, “It’s up to you. Be accountable.” We <a href="https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/stress/how-to-stop-caring-about-things-you-cant-control/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">don’t control everything in life</a>, and some days it may not feel like we control much of anything. Yet it’s the already-successful and content people who seem to be the ones asking, “What can I do?” </p>



<p>In 2012 I wrote about my mother-in-law, Helen Johnson, and I think this question defined her life. Even in tough times, she put her energy toward making things better, for her and for others. “What can I do?” is the flip side of “It’s your fault.” Instead, it says, “You are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/what-it-means-to-be-accountable/">responsible for your thoughts</a> and your actions.” So focus on getting out of your own way and doing what you can. Here are some simple gifts you can give yourself every day to keep you focused on what you can do:</p>



<h2 id="h-control-the-tapes-in-your-head"><strong>Control the tapes in your head</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>You are sabotaging yourself if your first reaction is how it’s someone else’s fault, how things never go your way or why your situation is tougher than everyone else’s. Our thoughts affect how we feel, which in turn affects our actions. Self-discipline starts with your thoughts, so pack up the blame game. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/do-you-treat-yourself-like-you-deserve/">Be kind to yourself</a> and be responsible for you. No one else has that much influence over your day.</p>



<h2 id="h-own-up-to-your-multitasking"><strong>Own up to your multitasking</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>You know you can do this even though you think you can’t. If you are multitasking on important things with important people, it seems like fighting a losing battle. I admit it, I’m pretty addicted to my phone. My husband has mentioned a discussion we had and I somehow missed just a few little important details. But I did answer the pressing email!&nbsp;</p>



<p>I am trying to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/12-steps-to-breaking-smartphone-addiction/">lessen my phone dependence</a> for Lent. I know. I’m working on it.</p>



<h2 id="h-change-one-thing-in-your-routine"><strong>Change one thing in your routine</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In my article on ideas for shaking up 2013, I mentioned the dependence we have on habit. Changing just one little thing can change how you think about your life, your work or your day. Come into the office early to have some quiet time to plan your day. Go to the Bible study you have had on your list for a year. Turn off the TV and take a walk. It doesn’t have to be big. Small changes remind us that we can do more than we think.</p>



<h2 id="h-inspire-yourself"><strong>Inspire yourself</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>I have been reading more and listening to inspiring podcasts in the car or on walks. It’s like having a personal motivational speaker or renowned expert right there in the passenger seat! Why don’t we do this more often? This is a great way to learn more, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/7-ways-to-practice-gratitude-to-help-you-grow/">focus on gratitude</a> and stay centered. I’m not a Pollyanna (though some may disagree), but seriously—if you only think about what is wrong, the changes you want to make will always seem too big.</p>



<h2 id="h-spend-30-minutes-connecting-and-reconnecting"><strong>Spend 30 minutes connecting and reconnecting</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A mentor once told me to spend 30 minutes every day staying in touch with my network and business friends. Don’t be the person who only asks to meet for coffee during the job search, never to be heard from again until the next job change. Instead, make a call on your way to the office. Send an email. Show interest and concern if you want to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/6-ways-to-build-lasting-relationships/">have good relationships</a>. Check how the new job is going, ask about the bumpy relationship with the boss or share helpful information. Be willing to give without expecting anything in return.</p>



<h2 id="h-don-t-make-everyone-s-problem-your-problem"><strong>Don’t make everyone’s problem your problem</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Your boss is having a bad day. The supplier doesn’t like the new product you designed. Your co-worker won’t share any credit. These situations can hit your emotions and change how you feel and interact with others. This is when the “What’s in my control?” question is great to ask. It’s another way of saying, “Don’t give others the power over your day.”</p>



<h2 id="h-do-one-thing-toward-your-big-goals"><strong>Do one thing toward your big goals</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Most of us have a fast-paced career or life and everything needs (or seems to need) immediate attention. If your goal is starting a business, but you <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/what-to-do-when-your-side-hustle-overtakes-your-day-job/">have a full-time job</a>, do one small thing every day that moves you closer toward being an entrepreneur. Set up a lunch meeting for some advice. Do some research online. Work on your financial plan for getting started. Don’t let the fire hose of little things overtake your big things.</p>



<h2 id="h-use-the-will-it-matter-in-two-weeks-test"><strong>Use the ‘Will it matter in two weeks?’ test</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In 2013 a team member was devastated over a mistake she made in communicating with a business contact and “felt sick to her stomach.” After talking about it, we concluded that she had apologized gracefully and it wouldn’t matter in two weeks. She let it go. We all have disappointments in our careers or make mistakes because we are human. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-let-go-of-regret/">We have to regroup</a> and move on to the next option. I use this question often because it helps separate the passing frustrations from the big issues that need more attention.</p>



<h2 id="h-call-your-mother"><strong>Call your mother</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>OK, yes, I’m a mother, so I’m slightly partial here, but I really mean all of the important people in your life. After some recent losses, I have been reminded that family and close friends aren’t always magically there. Don’t take these relationships for granted. Enjoy them! Call often! And, to my oldest son in college, texting me first is the next best thing.</p>



<h2 id="h-don-t-sleep-with-your-phone"><strong>Don’t sleep with your phone</strong>.&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Make sure you <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/adventures-in-divergent-thinking/202204/why-your-mind-needs-tech-break" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">get the mental break</a> you need to clear your head and not be in constant contact. Even the hyper-connected benefit from time to relax and think on their own. I’m working on this myself. I am convinced that it’s a part of being more intentional, thoughtful and focused.</p>



<p>I hope you’ll do these favors for yourself, for they are reminders of how to start the change in your life and work. Small things can have a big impact if you stay with them every day. Make “What can I do?” your mantra.</p>

Do You Have a Good Idea? Avoid the 8 Things That Can Kill It

<p>Change takes new ideas. Uncomfortable, audacious, unprecedented new ideas. Unfortunately, sometimes our <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-practices-to-come-up-with-new-ideas/">big new ideas</a> aren’t always welcome.</p>



<p>After a recent speech, a woman raised her hand and said, “I have ideas, but I’m not sure my organization really wants them. What do you do if no one is interested in your new ideas? Do you stay?”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>It’s a common question when I speak to groups about making waves. And my answer is always “It depends.”</p>



<p>Sure, there are companies with a limited appetite for change resisting new ideas—even for a better way of doing things. But before you blame your environment for blocking any forward motion, think about whether you might be getting in your own way.</p>



<p>Explore how much is in your control. There are certain go-to behaviors that will work against you in any environment, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-bad-habits-to-break/">behaviors that can create obstacles</a> in building interest or momentum around your ideas, especially if you need others to help make it happen. Avoiding these pitfalls will help you accelerate your next great idea.</p>



<p>So, do any of these eight idea-killing habits look familiar?</p>



<h2 id="h-1-do-you-forget-the-why-or-the-real-impact-your-idea-will-have"><strong>1. Do you forget the why, or the real impact your idea will have?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>If you want others to change, the ultimate impact has to be clear. Change can be hard for all of us, even if we wanted it.</p>



<p>Keep going back to the reason why the change matters—we can help our customers be healthier, we will become a trusted community partner, we can <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-strategies-to-manage-your-time-and-maximize-your-results/">work smarter and faster</a>, etc.</p>



<h2 id="h-2-do-you-miss-the-connection-to-business-results"><strong>2. Do you miss the connection to business results?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This goes hand in hand with the why. A lot of ideas go straight to the graveyard because of this mistake. Yes, our customers might like the option of new products, but what is it going to take to create them? What is the ultimate business impact?</p>



<p>There needs to be a basic return on investment to be sure your intention has been translated beyond just an idea.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-do-you-give-up-too-easily"><strong>3. Do you give up too easily?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>I recently spoke to a leader who told me there was no interest in her recommended change. After talking more, I found out that she had assumed there was minimal interest in her idea based on just one opinion.</p>



<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/change-is-growth-3-tips-for-embracing-new-opportunities/">Changes rarely happen easily</a>, or it would have been done already. We explored other ways to continue the conversation, new techniques for building interest and how to adapt based on the feedback she had already received.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-do-you-lecture"><strong>4. Do you lecture?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>If you are the only one talking, there is a good chance you aren’t at maximum effectiveness in creating interest in your idea.</p>



<p>Smart change activators ask questions and listen. They collaborate and involve others, even if they are sure they have the answers. They <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-tips-to-improve-team-collaboration/">find ways to work together</a>.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-do-you-skip-experimentation"><strong>5. Do you </strong><strong>skip experime</strong><strong>ntation?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>You can’t just beeline to the finish line, blinders up. You might miss something on the sidelines.</p>



<p>If you are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-ways-to-get-better-at-dealing-with-change/">taking on a new change</a> that hasn’t been done before, experiment. Try to see what works and what doesn’t. And adjust. Experimentation is a <a href="https://hbr.org/2020/03/building-a-culture-of-experimentation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">great way to reveal answers</a> to others through their own observations. They become invested in your idea because they are part of it.</p>



<h2 id="h-6-do-you-take-a-lack-of-interest-personally"><strong>6. Do you take a lack of interest personally?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Remember that new ideas will be <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/a-manual-for-dealing-with-rejection/">rejected and ignored</a>.</p>



<p>Those who create a successful new business or change how their team works together set their ego aside. You’ll get ignored, challenged, questioned—the applause will be in short supply. Keep your eye on the impact you hope to have more than what others think of you.</p>



<h2 id="h-7-do-you-look-down-on-those-who-don-t-get-it"><strong>7. Do you look down on those who don’t get it?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In my research on my book about <em><a href="https://amzn.to/39hGITX" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wave Makers</a></em>, I met Lindsay Pender, who introduced new policies and practices in her neonatal nursing group. She started the change based on her previous knowledge from working at a nationally renowned hospital, yet she did it with respect for her current teammates. She said, “They have a different set of experiences than me, and I have to remember that.”</p>



<p>Remember that we all see the world differently. Pender started a significant change with no authority because of her relentless commitment and her respect for those around her.</p>



<h2 id="h-8-do-you-overdo-it"><strong>8. Do you overdo it?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>I once worked with a brilliant colleague who was an idea machine. It became clear he had no filter—he didn’t stop to consider what was actually relevant to this growing business.</p>



<p>Successful entrepreneurs and leaders are always thinking and asking, <em>What if?</em> But they are also able to focus and spend energy on the ideas with real impact.</p>

5 Steps to Get Others Interested In Your Ideas

<p>People are always asking me, <em>What's the next step?</em> They have a great idea, cause or issue they're fired up about, but are unsure of what to do next. Well, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-start-a-business-in-a-day/">if you want to start a business</a>, create a new book club or change <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-key-to-success-on-a-team-is-connection/">how your team works together</a>, you can’t do it alone. Any change, or what I call a wave, takes interest from others.</p>



<p>Here are some quick tips for making sure that your plans and ideas are garnering interest from others.</p>



<h2 id="h-1-remember-what-s-in-it-for-us-not-just-what-s-in-it-for-me">1. Remember "What’s in it for us?"—not just "What’s in it for me?"</h2>



<p>People get on board when they can see a bigger “why”—the broader impact in your team, the community or organization. Sharing the financial goal isn’t enough.&nbsp; First off, make sure you know the bigger “why” and then share it often to keep your team on board and motivated.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.insidethegem.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gem</a> started as one of the first juice bars in Dallas, beginning when one of its founders, Leslie Needleman, used healthy eating in her treatment and recovery from breast cancer. Their “why” has always been about being healthy, and as a result, they share more than juice. They offer nutritional counseling, classes and information. Their purpose is based on “what’s in it for us,” not just “what’s in it for me.”</p>



<h2 id="h-2-find-your-idea-partners">2. Find your idea partners.</h2>



<p>In my research on <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-easy-ways-to-start-something-great/">those who start changes</a>, big and small, I learned that the very first sparks of an idea usually begin on the back of a napkin, in a cab or over a glass of wine. Those important discussions can <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-common-path-to-uncommon-success-begins-with-an-idea/">help your idea take shape</a>, and help you to understand how others see it. These early idea partners will also be important in spreading the word.</p>



<p>In writing my new book, I relied on several idea partners and learned where I had blocks and what wasn’t clear. My friend Kristi Erickson came in with a fresh perspective, which helps so much when you have worked on your change for a long time. These same idea partners have been wonderful advocates for me as the book became a reality.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-think-small-and-bite-sized">3. Think small and bite-sized.</h2>



<p>We are busy people! We are connected to multiple devices and multi-tasking has become an art form. This means you have to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-get-people-to-care-about-and-support-your-business/">get others’ attention</a> quickly.</p>



<p>Don’t aim for everything at once. Many of the Wave Makers mentioned in my book,<a href="https://amzn.to/3Lda838"> <em>Make Waves: Be the One to Start Change at Work and in Life</em></a>, didn’t ask for everything at once. They were incrementalists.</p>



<p>Julie Porter, of<a href="https://www.itsfrontporch.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Front Porch Marketing</a>, asked her close network over for dinner a few years ago to brainstorm the launch of her new business. She didn’t ask for too much, just for us to come to dinner and share ideas. After a fun night of conversation, we all left thinking, <em>How can we help her get her business started?</em> But she didn’t ask us for that much at first.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-go-retro-and-rely-on-conversations">4. Go retro and rely on conversations.</h2>



<p>We communicate so much through technology that it’s the norm these days. It’s fast, efficient and we have several devices that make it easy to do so.</p>



<p>Yet, when we receive an email that includes 30 other people or see a post asking for ideas or input, we often assume that someone else will respond, and move on. Contrast that with when you receive a call or have a personal conversation with someone asking for your ideas and participation. It’s different. You are much more likely to engage. And, it shows that your participation matters.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-get-some-points-on-the-board">5. Get some points on the board.</h2>



<p>Quick momentum can help your new idea take off. This is more than just good buzz, so be strategic about the kind of momentum that will help you.</p>



<p>If you watch the ABC hit show <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/shark-tank-7-questions-to-answer-before-starting-a-new-business"><em>Shark Tank</em></a>, you know that if you want investors, you need some proven sales history and a commitment for future sales. If you have an idea to try new technology at work, involvement and support from an expert or key influencer may be your momentum builder. Know the momentum builder that fits your need and situation, and that will propel you forward to your bigger goal.</p>

3 Steps to Make a Splash with Your Business Idea

<p>In writing my book, <em><a href="https://amzn.to/3Nha8AB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Make Waves: Be the One to Start Change at Work and in Life</a></em>, I spent the last year researching what I call Wave Makers—people who started a change in their organizations, communities or the marketplace.</p>



<p>Think of a “wave” as any change that begins with your <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-ways-successful-people-make-smart-decisions/"><strong>decision to act</strong></a> and ripples outward, or the transfer of energy that creates momentum and ultimately a positive impact. It may be a tiny decision at first, but the common denominator is that one person saw a need or opportunity and decided to be the one to<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/10-easy-ways-to-start-something-great"> start a change</a>.</p>



<p>But how do you get someone else, especially within your organization or among your peers, to notice your idea or action? Here are three key habits shared by entrepreneurial Wave Makers:</p>



<h2 id="h-1-move-quickly-even-without-all-of-the-answers">1. Move quickly—even without all of the answers.</h2>



<p>Wave Makers are predisposed to action, even when they don’t have all the answers. Beginning before you know exactly where you’re going can run against conventional wisdom about leadership. It’s counterintuitive for those who love to have all the answers or who like detailed planning before acting. But moving quickly is essential when making waves.</p>



<p>Many of us earned our reputations and progressed in business because we are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-art-of-problem-solving-4-creative-strategies-to-tackle-your-biggest-obstacles/">problem-solvers</a>. If you were the one in grade school waving your hand wildly from the back of the classroom, you’d understand. And if you have <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-manage-perfectionism/">perfectionist tendencies</a>, remember that starting a wave isn’t the same as earning an A or tackling your to-do list. It’s about initiating movement toward your goal and engaging others to be part of it. It’s not a command-and-control effort.</p>



<p>Wave Maker Brett Hurt, an entrepreneur and co-creator of leading customer input network Bazaarvoice, stressed the importance of movement in a recent conversation with me. “You’ve got to get going. Surround yourself with other people who are incredibly passionate about your cause, and move. If you have a dream, you have to get moving or it’s never going to happen,” Hurt says. “If I’m looking to invest in an entrepreneur, I’m looking for motion—someone who is really <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-right-moment-to-chase-your-dreams-is-now-3-tips-to-get-you-started/">going after their dream</a> and is passionate about it. If you really believe in it, why not? Why aren’t you acting?”</p>



<p>When you do begin, start by learning everything you can. Lois Melbourne, the co-creator of the human resources software firm Aquire, did everything she could to <a href="https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-make-informed-decisions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gather facts and then take action</a>. “I want to learn and feel like I can make a very educated decision,” says Melbourne, who read everything she could find about talent management and analytics. “Ask tons of questions,” she advises. “Do the research. Don’t wait for perfect data—or even all of the data. But at the same time, I don’t make uneducated decisions. Gut instinct comes from assimilating a lot of information and then making the decision that you need to make to make an educated guess. That is enough.”</p>



<p>Taking the first step can be the hardest, but Wave Makers have a bias for movement and progress. It takes <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-daily-tips-for-building-self-confidence/">confidence in yourself</a>, your idea and others.</p>



<h2 id="h-2-tell-everyone">2. Tell everyone.</h2>



<p>Many Wave Makers described talking with “hundreds of people” about their business idea. They viewed themselves as the personal advocate and interest builder for their wave. No one I interviewed for my book mentioned the savvy email campaign or the jaw-dropping marketing presentation they used to get others on their bandwagons. It all came back to personal conversations with people they trusted and who trusted them.</p>



<p>Share what you are up to with everyone. Ask for other people’s thoughts. This is an essential part of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/master-the-sales-mindset-to-land-your-biggest-clients/">building positive word-of-mouth</a> while accelerating learning.</p>



<p>Allen Stephenson, who founded clothing company Southern Tide while he was still a college student, shared his first actions and where he chose to spend his energies: “I talked to people who used to own apparel manufacturing companies, financial people and so many others. I was taking people out to lunch like crazy—every day like three, four or five people. And some of them are still involved today. I didn’t and still don’t know how to do all this stuff, but I did know how to say, ‘This is the vision, the dream. We’re going to do this and make clothes in the way that I’m describing, and we can do this together.’”</p>



<p>When I started my business, I met with dozens of people individually and told them my plans. I asked for their advice and words of wisdom. Gibbs Mood, a successful business leader and mentor, gave me the same advice I’m giving you: “Don’t get too clever and overthink it. Just tell everyone you meet what you are doing and your <a href="https://www.masterclass.com/articles/the-ultimate-guide-to-setting-business-goals#4-tips-for-setting-effective-business-goals">goals for your business</a>. It’s the hands-down best way to get others interested in your plans.”</p>



<h2 id="h-3-make-it-easy-to-say-yes">3. Make it easy to say yes.</h2>



<p>When Allen Stephenson started out, he took his prototype shirts to M. Dumas &amp; Sons, a premier clothing store in Charleston, South Carolina, in a Gap bag—nothing was even branded yet.</p>



<p>“I asked to talk to the store manager and said, ‘I have these shirts I’d like to show you.’ He told me that the last thing he needed was another polo shirt,” Stephenson said. “I said, ‘I know—you’re right. I’m not trying to sell you polo shirts.’ He was confused and wasn’t clear where I was going. I said, ‘I’m going to give you these. I made them and I’m really impressed with them, and I want to see if you are, too—or if your customers are. Here are a dozen shirts in different colors and sizes. Just take them. Here’s my number. Give me a call if you get a chance and let me know what you think.’”</p>



<p>After a few weeks, Stephenson received a phone call from the manager at M. Dumas &amp; Sons. Not only did the store want to order shirts, but management was also interested in creating a small wall to feature them. “And that was it. That was when I knew it was happening,” Stephenson says.</p>



<p>Allen Stephenson’s wave started because he made it easy to say yes at the first step.</p>

Starting a New Chapter in Life? Here Are 7 Ways to Make the Change Positive

<p>It happened.</p>



<p>As a mom, it’s the day you’ve always anticipated, the one that feels like it will never really come. But it does—and it did. It’s the college drop-off.</p>



<p>We took our son to college two weeks ago, and as we moved him in, I busied myself with unpacking, room setup and a bulletin board we had to go get. Surely this busyness and total distraction would make it all easier, right? Yet inside I knew that this hot August day was a lot bigger than a bulletin board. One chapter was closing while another opened.</p>



<p>I’m a career girl and always have been. Work has been an important part of my life, so I thought (and friends told me), <em>You have your career—you are so busy with clients and your business. It will be easier for you.</em></p>



<p>All true—except my theories on how busyness makes it so much easier were off base.<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/3-tips-to-open-your-heart-mind-and-life-to-change"> </a><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-tips-to-open-your-heart-mind-and-life-to-change/">Adapting to change</a> has more to do with who<em> </em>we are than what we do.</p>



<p>New beginnings have the power to firmly put the past behind you. It could be anything from taking your baby to college (or kindergarten) to moving to a new city, surviving a divorce, making a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-you-can-put-yourself-on-a-new-career-path/">big career change</a> or <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507832/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">losing someone</a>.</p>



<p>Even when change is good, our personal definition of normal undergoes a dramatic overhaul. But because of it, we have the opportunity to start again and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-rewrite-old-stories-and-achieve-your-greatness/">write a new chapter</a> with intention.</p>



<p>Here are some practical steps for a positive start to your new chapter. Yes, I’m working on these, too:</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-carefully-plan-your-first-month-and-shake-up-your-routine">1. Carefully plan your first month (and shake up your routine).</h2>



<p>After we took my son to college, I scheduled several fun events over the next few weeks, knowing that my first month would be the hardest. I organized fun dinners with friends, football games and girls’ nights out. My husband and I played local tourists and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-ways-to-get-outside-and-why-you-should/">visited some places we’d never been</a> right in our own town. And we planned when we’d see our son next.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-do-something-out-of-the-ordinary">2. Do something out of the ordinary.</h2>



<p>Last week, with some encouragement from a friend, I took my first hot-air balloon ride in Santa Fe—which was definitely out of my normal. At first, I was a little uneasy, but it turned out to be one of my most memorable activities ever. It was a reminder that <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/change-is-growth-3-tips-for-embracing-new-opportunities/">change can be exciting</a>, too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-take-off-your-hero-cape">3. Take off your hero cape.</h2>



<p>You can’t do this by yourself. (I am working hard on this one.)</p>



<p>Scholar and author Brené Brown says that vulnerability is the key to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-ways-to-start-connecting-with-people/">connecting with others</a>. For self-reliant people like me, this is hard—I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me. But accepting support is a healthy part of relationships. Let a friend or family member know when you are having a tough day or afternoon. It’s OK for someone to check on you for a change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-rediscover-what-you-enjoy">4. Rediscover what you enjoy.</h2>



<p>This is especially true for those parents who drop their kids off at college or kindergarten. Your busy lives can become so consumed with family and hectic schedules that you completely forget what you like to do.</p>



<p>I recently asked a friend what she would enjoy doing in her free time if there were no restrictions or expectations. She finally admitted that she really didn’t know anymore.&nbsp; If you have a long pause after this one, keep going back to it until you have your answer. <em>What was fun when you were 10 years old?</em> Make sure you didn’t forget in the midst of being a busy grownup.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-be-kind-to-yourself-when-you-have-a-low-moment">5. Be kind to yourself when you have a low moment.</h2>



<p>When starting a new chapter, there will be setbacks and low points when you think, <em>Can I do this?</em> or <em>Will life feel normal again?</em> Expect them. Allow yourself this reality. Talk to a friend, write in your journal, pray or meditate, and find your own way to learn and regroup.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-ways-to-get-better-at-dealing-with-change/">adjustment to big changes</a><strong> </strong>isn’t linear. It isn’t that each day gets better and better. It’s a wavy line that moves up and down. Accept that one day or hour may just be harder for no obvious reason.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-6-contribute-to-something-bigger-than-you">6. Contribute to something bigger than you.</h2>



<p>Contributing to something bigger than you <a href="https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-shift-your-perspective-to-have-a-positive-outlook" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changes your perspective</a>. Also, in those times when you are completely self-focused, you can turn it upside down by concentrating your attention on something beyond yourself. Your definition of ‘bigger’ may be helping those in your community or your extended family, or it may be providing an opportunity for those that work in your business.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-7-rewrite-your-story">7. Rewrite your story.</h2>



<p>This is your chance to do something you have always wanted to do. Rather than look back and miss what has changed, think about what you can do now that you couldn’t before.</p>



<p>It’s never too late to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/new-entrepreneurs-heres-how-to-get-your-business-started-on-the-right-foot/">start your new business</a>, write your first book, begin a new career, volunteer at the nonprofit you’ve always admired or go back and get the degree you’ve always wanted. The years will go by regardless, so you might as well be where you want to be as they do.</p>



<p>Starting a new chapter can be scary, it can be sad, it can be exciting… all rolled into one.</p>

<p>Something great starts with, well, something. Bob had a big idea for the community, yet his first step was just asking a few people to meet to talk about it. Allen wanted to start a new business and he began by setting up coffees and lunches every day with those who could help him learn. Cynthia’s first step in <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/a-managers-guide-to-dismantling-a-fear-based-company-culture-from-the-inside-out/">changing the culture</a> of the call center she worked in was setting aside time each day to walk around and listen. As a nurse, Lindsay’s first step in changing procedures in her neonatal ICU unit was bringing new information to her team meetings.</p>



<p>None of these first steps are daunting. It’s because the first step wasn’t the end game. It was just a way to get started and move. In my research for my book,&nbsp;<em><a href="https://amzn.to/3Evhc8p" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Make Waves: Be the One to Start Change at Work and in Life</a>,</em> I’ve learned that those who start change are incrementalists. They know that progress happens and grows, but you have to start first—even if the first step is small.</p>



<p>I have had many conversations with others about their idea for a change—or what I call a wave. I always encourage exploring and learning to find the first step. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/letter-from-my-future-self-the-first-step-is-the-hardest/">Getting started is the hardest part</a>.</p>

<p>Don’t view a book as the bible on your topic, but to spur ideas. Menlo Innovations was first envisioned after Rich Sheridan started reading books about the new ways of leading a business and on design. A new idea emerged.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-invite-knowledgeable-experts-over-for-a-discussion">3. <strong>Invite knowledgeable experts over for a discussion</strong>.</h2>



<p>Create a time for a conversation about your ideas and ask those who could contribute for an hour or two of time.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-start-an-ideas-notebook">4.&nbsp;<strong>Start an ideas notebook. </strong></h2>



<p>Begin to research and collect ideas and interesting examples for <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-start-a-business-in-a-day/">your new business</a>, product or non-profit. Writing down your thoughts and creating a file for inspiration can help your ideas emerge and grow. Share what you have learned with someone you trust.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-binge-watch-youtube">5.&nbsp;<strong>Binge watch YouTube. </strong></h2>



<p>Between TED Talks and thousands of other speeches you can listen to almost any speaker on almost any topic. Create your own personal viewing station. Take notes and write down important points that can help you develop out your plans. Determine how to translate your key points into action.</p>

You should <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-effective-steps-for-setting-why-goals/">know your <em>why</em></a> though.</p>



<h2 id="h-8-find-one-small-experiment">8.&nbsp;<strong>Find one small experiment</strong>.</h2>



<p>Find one small way to dabble in your idea. If you have a new product idea, try creating a few examples to see how it works. If you want to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-write-a-book/">write a book</a>, start a blog to try writing more and explore new topics. A good experiment answers questions so identify those upfront. Let your experiment guide your longer term decisions.</p>



<h2 id="h-9-write-down-your-must-haves-including-financials">9.&nbsp;<strong>Write down your “must haves,” including financials.</strong></h2>



<p>I find that this is the step most often overlooked.&nbsp;Your must-haves’ create boundaries for you. Questions like ‘can you invest in the business?’ or ‘ what are your minimum earnings required and for how long?’ make sure you know you your minimum requirements for your idea.</p>



<h2 id="h-10-create-an-options-matrix">10.&nbsp;<strong>Create an options matrix</strong>.</h2>



<p>On the left column list out all of your ‘must haves’. Across the top row write out all of the viable options you have developed for getting started. Rate each option against your must-haves’&nbsp;While this won’t give you the answer, it will help you compare one against the other and rule out choices that just don’t get you where you want to go. Pick the one that is the best place to start and begin.</p>



<p>When you are starting a wave, it hasn’t been before in quite this way. Expect surprises and understand that you won’t have all of the answers upfront. Find your way to get started and move forward.</p>

<p>The new year is packed with possibilities, including a fresh, new start. Still, many people scrap making resolutions all together, thinking <em>they never work</em>. This year, set aside time to figure out what you want to do and how you are going to do it.</p>

<p>Which parts of your life are strong and vibrant? Which areas are often neglected? Think about all facets of your life today:</p>

<p>Rather than going straight to your list of 2018 goals, first consider the areas that most need renewed attention or that have been unintentionally neglected. For example, relationships can have a powerful impact on happiness. If you are swamped with work or school, making time for relationships may feel like a luxury, but <a href="news.harvard.edu:gazette:story:2017:04:over-nearly-80-years-harvard-study-has-been-showing-how-to-live-a-healthy-and-happy-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a recent study from Harvard</a> concluded that those who kept close relationships lived longer and happier lives.</p>
<p>If you aren’t sure about where you are today, ask those who know you best. Look at how you spent your time in 2017 for clues. Did you hear subtle signals about an area that needs your attention? A doctor’s warning, lack of growth at your job or a best friend claiming they never see you anymore can all be important input for you to consider in 2018.</p>
<h2>2. Repeat the past: <em>What has helped me change before?</em></h2>
<p>Of course you want to start anew in 2018! But consider exploring what has helped you change in the past and try it again.</p>
<p>How were you successful in a college course that challenged but energized you? How did you recover from a personal setback at your lowest point? What helped you make progress and reach your goals? Be very specific and use the strategies that have worked for you before.</p>
<p>The only way I can <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-ways-successful-people-make-smart-decisions">get comfortable with big decisions</a> is through information. The bigger the decision, the more I need to know. I do plenty of online research, but I place a very high value on conversations with experts who can adapt knowledge to my situation. When I started my business, I spent quality time talking to those who had gone down this path to inform both my decision and my plan. All this information gave me the confidence I needed to get started.</p>
<h2>3. Mind games: <em>How can I get out of my way?</em></h2>
<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/6-mindset-shifts-that-will-improve-your-life">The mind is a powerful thing.</a> We can do big things when our mind is convinced we can do it.</p>
<p>Know your go-to fears and how you can unknowingly sabotage yourself. I often ask my clients, “If anything gets in your way, what will it be?” Do you know the answer for yourself?</p>
<p>A recent client’s answer was, “I’m impatient and want immediate results, and this goal will take some time.” The obvious next question was, “What happens when you don’t get results quickly enough?” You guessed it: “I move on to something else.” If immediate gratification is your kryptonite, break your dream into tiny pieces to feed your desire to see faster progress.</p>
<p>Research says <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-years-resolutions-courses-2016-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">80 percent of New Year’s resolutions</a> are over by mid-February. When the goal seems too big, too hard or too long, we go back to our old ways. Rather than be a statistic, break your goal into one-month resolutions. Focus on January one week at a time.</p>
<p>I was scared to start my consulting business over 10 years ago. I had been in big industry jobs, and this decision was a leap of faith. My brain hack was telling myself it was just a yearlong experiment.<em> No big thing</em>. I felt confident that at the end of one year, I’d know if this was the path for me.</p>
<h2>4. Purpose: <em>What is my</em> why<em>?</em></h2>
<p>Most New Year’s resolutions are pretty predictable. The most common resolutions are usually things like <em>get healthy</em> and <em>get organized</em>. The key is understanding why these goals and others really matter in your life.</p>
<p>Commit to specific goals that fit the areas that need your time and attention, and have a bigger purpose. Know why making this change matters, rather than just wanting to lose weight or organize your office. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/john-addison-how-to-find-your-why-in-life">Knowing your <em>why</em></a> will increase the likelihood that you will stick with it when it gets hard.</p>
<p>If your <em>why</em> is building in more time for relationships and fun to enrich your life, then keep that <em>why</em> on a note and stick it to your mirror. Start small. Downsize your expectation of what is required for having people over. Call friends to check in on your commute home. Be an <em>asker</em> and invite people to get together rather than communicating only through text. Twelve months of even small changes will have an impact.</p>

Career and Motherhood: 10 Ways to Make It Work

<p>“I’m just afraid I’m not doing enough as a mother—and maybe I’m not even doing it right at all.”</p>



<p>A young working mom, her eyes misty and tired from little sleep, quietly shared that with me. And I’ve had a version of this conversation with too many women recently. But I’ve been there, too.</p>



<p>To these tired and stressed mothers, and other caregivers, I have one message: Please, be kinder to yourself. Would you allow others to talk to you the way you talk to yourself?</p>



<p>Be it taking care of your children or an aging parent, you have taken on the responsibilities of essentially two jobs. Banish the mean girl sitting on your shoulder, whispering, <em>you should have done this</em>, or <em>you should have done that</em>. Yes, you could have, but something else was more important on that day, or that week.</p>



<p>To these tired and stressed mothers, and other caregivers, I have one message: Please, be kinder to yourself.</p>



<p>There is no one right answer on how to do career and motherhood—on how to “have it all.” But you can do both, and you can do both well.</p>



<p>How you do it depends on unique factors: what you want, your situation, your home life and the kind of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-ways-to-pursue-the-job-you-want/">career you want to have</a>. There are no universal fix-alls. With that caveat, here is what has worked for me and the <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/10-pieces-of-career-advice-for-my-21-year-old-self/">things I wish I had known at 21</a>.  </p>



<h2 id="h-1-stop-comparing-yourself-to-other-moms"><strong>1. Stop comparing yourself to other moms.</strong></h2>



<p>You can’t compare your schedule to the mom who volunteers at school three times a week. Don’t go there. Ask what matters most to your child and spend your energy there. Personally, I always go for the big hitters—class parties or events when my involvement was most impactful.</p>



<h2 id="h-2-ask-your-kids-how-they-feel-and-let-that-be-your-compass"><strong>2. Ask your kids how they feel and let that be your compass.</strong></h2>



<p>Rather than define success by external standards, look at your family. How are they doing? If they are happy and well adjusted, don’t get caught up in what you are supposed to do. And, in case you forgot, stop comparing. </p>



<h2 id="h-3-treat-important-family-events-like-client-meetings"><strong>3. Treat important family events like client meetings. </strong></h2>



<p>I mark holiday parties and end-of-year-programs on my calendar way in advance. I determine when my involvement matters most to my boys and fiercely protect the time—even if it’s just as the class guest reader. No apologies, no explanation at work and no guilt.</p>



<h2 id="h-4-let-your-kids-in-on-your-decisions"><strong>4. Let your kids in on your decisions.</strong></h2>



<p>There were weeks when I was involved in important projects—so I had to work a lot. I explained to my boys that I had made a commitment and I wanted to do my best, and that was going to take extra work. I wanted them to know that I wasn’t just working; at a deeper level, it was about honoring my word and delivering. Children learn that there are times when nothing can substitute for hard work.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-look-beyond-one-day-or-one-week"><strong>5. Look beyond one day or one week.</strong></h2>



<p>Don’t be hard on yourself because of a really hectic 24 hours, or seven days. Look at schedules and time with family over the course of a much broader time horizon—months rather than days.</p>



<h2 id="h-6-find-the-right-partner-s"><strong>6. Find the right partner(s).</strong></h2>



<p>Careers and parenting take partnerships. Consider the mindset of your life partner upfront. As an example, before my oldest could drive, my husband, Jim, and I looked at our calendars and planned ahead for who would cover the boys’ activities and where we had gaps. We have a real partnership. Single parents can get that from friends and family, too.</p>



<h2 id="h-7-get-out-of-a-situation-that-doesn-t-fit-your-definition-of-success"><strong>7. Get out of a situation that doesn’t fit your definition of success.</strong></h2>



<p>Don’t set yourself up for failure. Recognize when your <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-align-your-career-with-your-personal-definition-of-success/">career will never line up with your goals</a>. If you never want to travel and you treasure free nights and weekends, careers in real estate or management consulting could be problematic. Or find a workaround. Be realistic—because industry culture is unlikely to change.</p>



<h2 id="h-8-say-no-more-often"><strong>8. Say no more often.</strong></h2>



<p>Make “no” your best friend and get a black belt in prioritizing. Time is your most important resource. And saying yes to one thing always means saying no to something else—even though that decision is never technically vocalized.</p>



<h2 id="h-9-ask-for-what-you-need"><strong>9. Ask for what you need.</strong></h2>



<p>Set boundaries. Share your expectations. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-tips-to-prepare-for-a-career-growth-conversation/">Share the role you want</a>, the schedule you want, the career you want. No one can read your mind. And, if you need more time at home for a child struggling in school, then don’t tell co-workers to “call me anytime this weekend.” Don’t undermine yourself because of guilt or old habits.</p>



<h2 id="h-10-invite-friends-over-even-if-your-couch-is-old"><strong>10. Invite friends over even if your couch is old.</strong></h2>



<p>Stressed, busy moms often think, <em>I can’t have friends over because my couch is old, my house is messy, and, and</em>…. I know because I used to think that way. Ask people over anyway. Order pizza. Have a bottle of wine. Perfect conditions don’t exist—and they’ll never come. Friendships make life more fun, more meaningful and they give you healthy perspective.</p>

<p>Remember that this struggle isn’t just a career-mom thing; it’s a human thing. People are working through all kinds of challenges—aging parents, difficult marriages, family illness. It’s just that some are more visible, some are more universal than others. There is always a trade-off to be made in life.</p>



<p>So please give yourself a break. And, as you’re being kinder to yourself, be kinder to other women and support them, however you can. We need this from each other.</p>

If you would never speak to others the way you internally speak to yourself, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/if-you-want-to-change-your-life-change-what-you-think">you can change</a>.</p>



<p>It takes time to reprogram your thinking, but self-awareness is step one. Be more aware of your thoughts. Ask yourself: W<em>hat is on my mind right now and why? <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/positive-thoughts-positive-results">Are my thoughts helping me?</a> </em></p>



<p>A pause to reboot your internal thoughts can help you become more intentional and positive.</p>



<h2 id="h-2-separate-how-you-feel-from-what-you-do">2. Separate how you feel from what you do. </h2>



<p>Take time to acknowledge how you really feel. Minding your mind doesn’t mean hiding or ignoring your feelings. But separate your feelings from your actions—<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/do-your-actions-reflect-your-values">your actions are a separate decision.</a></p>



<p>For example, if I am frustrated that a peer is difficult to work with on a project, I can acknowledge my frustration and then separately decide how to handle it. Or, a friend constantly misses commitments and you feel angry. Rather than ignore it or end the friendship, choose to be open and direct about the impact his or her actions are having on the friendship.</p>



<p>Your actions are a separate decision that you alone make based on your feelings.</p>



<h2 id="h-3-stop-comparing">3. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/videos/youtube/how-to-stop-comparing-yourself-to-others">Stop comparing.</a> </h2>



<p>There will always be someone more successful, more accomplished, with more medals, more money and a better promotion. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/5-ways-to-avoid-social-media-envy">This constant comparison game means you’ll likely never measure up.</a> The bar is always moving and usually it’s up. So have your own internal bar of success based upon what matters most to you, your starting point and the progress you’ve made.</p>



<p>As a career mom, I learned over time that my value wasn’t measured by how much I volunteered at my sons’ schools compared to other mothers. My focus was on how our boys were doing and if they were thriving, rather than comparing myself to moms with more available volunteer time.</p>



<p>Find the real meaning in your efforts. Meaning is a powerful way to overcome comparison to others as you focus on impact and contribution.</p>

<p>Time is our greatest asset. If we are intentional in how we use it, we have a better chance of <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/john-c-maxwell-how-to-design-an-optimum-life">living the life we want</a>. How you start each day plays a big role in being intentional.</p>



<p>Find a few minutes to think about how you want to spend your day, both in terms of time and the thoughts you want to have. Prayer, meditation, exercise and a little quiet time to think can have a monumental impact on your day, week and year.</p>



<p>I always ask my clients when they can create this thinking and planning time, and where this can best occur. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/the-best-decision-i-ever-made">My most important decisions</a> and changes began after I had the time to really think about what I wanted.</p>



<p>Find a quiet corner to pause rather than a busy kitchen—make the time in your busy life.</p>



<h2 id="h-5-do-something-new-every-week">5. Do something new every week.</h2>



<p>Predictable days and habits keep us in a rut. Every week, pick one new small change you want to make.</p>



<p>A friend of mine declared a “<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/videos/youtube/ted-talks-shonda-rhimes-my-year-of-saying-yes-to-everything">year of living differently</a>.” She took cooking lessons, made changes to her house, planned several small weekend trips and learned to fly fish.</p>



<p>Intentionally shake up the routine and try something you’ve never done before. Even a small change, such as watching an interesting TED Talk while getting ready in the morning or experimenting with a new menu item on the grill can trigger new energy.</p>



<h2 id="h-6-listen-even-when-you-want-to-talk"><strong>6. Listen even when you want to talk. </strong></h2>



<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/9-tips-to-become-a-better-listener">Listening is the most powerful learning tool and relationship builder</a> you have at your disposal, but in our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it is wildly underutilized.</p>



<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/6-underlying-benefits-of-asking-questions">Ask questions</a> and really listen, rather than thinking about what you are going to say next. Your full attention is one of the greatest compliments you can give to someone.</p>



<h2 id="h-7-battle-the-addiction-to-being-right"><strong>7. Battle the addiction to being right.</strong></h2>



<p>The desire to always be right can overshadow even the strongest relationship. Being right at all costs might fulfill an inner need you have, but often at the expense of someone or something else.</p>



<p>Consider this situation: <em>Is there only one answer? Do we need to agree? Is there new information here that I haven’t considered? </em></p>



<p>Of course, keep your point of view and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/top-of-mind-what-do-you-value-most">speak up for values</a> and causes that matter. But if your desire to be right overtakes you in any situation regardless of importance or relationship, a change might do some good. There is no joy in “winning the battle but losing the war.”</p>

<p>Any successful person experiences setbacks. It goes hand in hand with trying something bigger and better. Setbacks happen, so expect and accept them when they come.</p>

<p>The creator of a thriving children’s nonprofit once told me, “Setbacks are a badge of honor. It meant that I was doing something hard.” Embrace your badge of honor and own it.</p>

<h2><strong>2. They set time limits for disappointment. </strong></h2>

<p>Allow yourself time to acknowledge your feelings of disappointment. But put a time limit on how long you will focus on that feeling. You might still feel disappointment, but <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/top-of-mind-6-ways-to-make-progress-when-youre-not-feeling-it">redirect that emotional energy toward progress</a>.</p>

<p>Your promotion didn’t happen or you weren’t hired for your dream job—accept your feelings as they are. Once recognized, quickly move on to “now what?”</p>

<h2><strong>3. They manage their blind spots. </strong></h2>

<p>If failure causes us to lose perspective, anticipate what will cause you to lose yours. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/dont-let-your-blind-spots-distort-reality">What’s your blind spot?</a></p>

<p>I am naturally impatient, so when I can’t see the progress I had hoped for, I know my blind spot is growing. Others might assume that a setback is exclusively their fault and miss other contributing factors. It keeps you from accurately assessing what really happened and what you need to do.</p>

<h2><strong>4. Less emotion and more information</strong>.</h2>

<p>Objectively size up what happened. Was there an event or decision that created a change in course?</p>

<p>Be a researcher and actually write down what worked and what didn’t. Write down what factors created the setback. Was there funding? Was there enough interest? Seeing the facts on paper void of emotion can crystallize the facts. Be objective.</p>

<h2><strong>5. They rely on “now what?”</strong></h2>

<p>Successful people find a path to progress. Carrie might consider a different assortment for her store, more marketing, an event to encourage new customers or more social media focus.</p>

<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/4-things-i-learned-from-keeping-weekly-lists">Make a list</a> of options and then evaluate each of them based on what the situation requires, not what feeds your greatest emotional need.</p>

<h2><strong>6. They think tomorrow more than next year</strong>.</h2>

<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/9-ways-to-deal-with-change">A change in course can be overwhelming</a> when you have too many decisions to make. Feeling overwhelmed leads to stagnation because doing nothing seems easier in the moment than making big decisions.</p>

<p>Instead, ask yourself, <em>What can I do tomorrow or next week to make progress?</em> Start there. You need a long-term direction, but it might evolve rather than being an aha moment.</p>

<h2><strong>7. They learn what must be learned.</strong></h2>

<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/rocking-the-boat-4-traits-of-wave-makers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">My research on Wave Makers</a>, and the research on other successful people, reveals a confident willingness to learn what must be learned. Rather than saying <em>I could never start a business,</em> successful people determine what they must learn to become an entrepreneur.</p>

<p>A lack of experience or knowledge doesn’t close a door, but defines what must be learned. In my research, I met successful entrepreneurs who knew nothing about running a business or even their product when they started. Or those who started an impactful nonprofit with no knowledge of managing any organization. But they learned and surrounded themselves with those who knew what they didn’t know. The lack of knowledge was a path that must be followed rather than a dead end.</p>

<h2><strong>8. They manage their self-talk. </strong></h2>

<p>Setbacks and disappointment can create self-doubt. Manage your internal thoughts so you <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/4-tips-to-build-your-best-future-from-elite-dailys-gerard-adams">stay focused on the future</a> and what you can do next. Give yourself credit for doing important work and trying something new.</p>

<p>After all, a setback is a setup for a comeback.</p>

You think, <em>I won’t know anyone there. I really should go—but I don’t want to. I </em>hate<em> small talk. </em>

Small talk has earned a bad rap, because it usually represents meaningless and trivial conversation. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Research shows that those who have more meaningful conversations are <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-science-backed-ways-to-be-happier-right-now">happier and more fulfilled</a>, and small talk <em>can</em> open the door to interesting and meaningful connections, if you are aware and listening.

But real conversations are harder with people we don’t know. These tips can help take the stress out of small talk and create a quality conversation:

If you spend the week anticipating and worrying because you know you will feel uncomfortable, you’ve set yourself up for failure. Remember <em>why</em> you are going—to celebrate a friend on his or her special day, to meet others who share your interest or connect with your co-workers.
<h2><strong>2. Decide who you’d like to meet before you go.</strong></h2>
Take a look at who else will be there and plan to meet those who might share something in common. This might be someone who knows a mutual friend, a fellow baseball fan or a business owner <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-5-simple-steps-to-plan-your-dream-life">living your dream</a>.
<h2><strong>3. Make a game out of it.</strong></h2>
Trick your mind into making it seem easier and more fun. Commit to at least an hour. Plan to meet at least five people. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/podcast/ep-12-how-to-learn-something-new">Challenge yourself to learn two new things.</a> This mind shift can help tame the anxiety and make the conversation more fun.
<h2><strong>4. Take responsibility for meeting others.</strong></h2>
Don’t wait for others to approach you. Say hello first. When you expect others to make the first move, you’ll be disappointed. And the more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll be.

<h2><strong>6. Have your “go-to” questions ready. </strong></h2>
Starting a conversation with a new person can be hard. Try, “How do you know _____?” “What is keeping you busy these days?” or “What brought you to this area?” It doesn’t have to be complicated, just something to get you started if you you’re new acquaintances.
<h2><strong>7. Be interested.</strong> <strong>Listen more than you talk. </strong></h2>
Asking questions is <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/7-keys-to-a-flawless-conversation">the secret ingredient to interesting conversations</a>. Stay away from yes/no questions. You can naturally start with easy questions that feel natural, but listen for an interesting comment to explore and build upon.

As an example for how your questions might flow:

 	<li> I didn’t realize you were a graphic designer. What kind of design do you do?</li>
 	<li> Why did you decide to get into graphic design?</li>

</ul>
Within a few questions, you can move to more substance and a real conversation.

<h2><strong>8. Be yourself!</strong></h2>
No one likes the fake networker. In the interest of being more outgoing, don’t be someone you aren’t. Putting out effort doesn’t mean being fake.

Find something that you can genuinely compliment the other person on and then shift to a question so it isn’t awkward. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/how-to-make-others-feel-significant">Everyone loves a nice compliment.</a>
<h2><strong>10. Plan a graceful exit. </strong></h2>
Every conversation runs its course, but a natural end is hard. Just say, “It’s been great to meet you, and I hope you have the best vacation next week.” Excuse yourself to do something else and move on.
<h2><strong>11. Look for others who want to connect. </strong></h2>
I recently went to a large celebration event and only knew the busy host. I noticed another guest taking her time at the snack table and introduced myself. We had a great conversation while those around us caught up with longtime friends.
<h2><strong>12. Be an introducer.</strong></h2>
If you are talking with someone and another guest looks a little uncomfortable, invite him or her into the conversation. Remember the times when you were that uncomfortable person and try to include others.
<h2><strong>13. Don’t be the “hammer looking for the nail.”</strong></h2>
Your favorite topic isn’t everyone else’s. You might love your new grill or your favorite book or TV show, but don’t assume everyone else is interested. Gauge the conversation and flow with it.
<h2><strong>14. Don’t expect too much.</strong></h2>
Not every get-together will result in new friends. That’s OK. You still accomplished <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-steps-to-achieve-any-goal">your goal</a> of going when it was easier not to—you were there supporting a friend or a co-worker. And that is enough.
<h2><strong>15. Get in the habit.</strong></h2>
Don’t constrain this habit to social events. Say hello to the person next to you on the plane before you grab your headphones (I’m working on this). Talk to your waiter. Ask your Uber driver about his day. The habit of saying hello and listening is a muscle you can develop by working on it every day.

<p>The truth is we love certainty.</p>

<p>Research confirms that our brains love predictability and knowing what to expect. We might even choose a less desirable option just because it’s familiar.</p>

<p>So how do you know when it’s time to leave the safe and familiar? <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/need-a-fresh-start-try-these-5-steps-to-shift-for-good">When is it time to branch out and start anew</a>? The signs are often not in the form of applause or encouragement, but doubts or ideas with nowhere to go.</p>

<p>I started my business 10 years ago. I didn’t decide to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/how-to-go-from-employee-to-entrepreneur">become an entrepreneur</a> overnight—quite the opposite. I had nagging doubts that didn’t go away and ideas that finally felt like they must be pursued. It took me almost two years to really get started.</p>

<p>Here are signs that <em>you</em> might be ready to make a change:</p>

<h2><strong>1. Discomfort.</strong></h2>

<p><a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-the-4-powerful-ways-to-change-a-bad-habit">Discomfort is a powerful emotion.</a> Rather than running from it, ask why it’s there. You might be learning something very new or finding yourself in an unfamiliar situation. Which can be the perfect conditions for growth.</p>

<p>We want discomfort to go away—and the sooner the better. Instead <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/why-stepping-outside-your-comfort-zone-is-worth-it-even-when-its-uncomfortable">try <em>using</em> that discomfort</a>. Don’t turn away from it. Let it be the energy to try something new, to propel you to learning something new or to test a path you never dreamed you could take.</p>

<h2><strong>2. Your priorities have changed.</strong></h2>

<p>We make many decisions throughout life that fit a point in time, but might no longer work today. What once brought you joy or a sense of accomplishment doesn’t now. Is it because your values have changed? Or that you’ve accomplished that goal too many times before and you want something more?</p>

<p>A friend of mine recently decided to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/3-ways-to-leave-your-job-and-start-your-career">leave his job</a> and accept a new position at another company. He had reached many of his earlier career goals. Yet as he made the difficult decision to leave, he shared, “I’ve done everything I can do here. My successes in the future will look very much like what I’ve already done. I’m ready for a new challenge that will <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/what-to-do-when-you-feel-stuck">make sure I don’t get stuck</a>.”</p>

<p>His lack of fulfillment told him that what was once important, just didn’t feel that way anymore.</p>

<h2><strong>3. Old answers don’t work anymore. </strong></h2>

<p>You feel like you are hitting your head against the wall. What worked well in the past no longer fits. There is frustration when what worked in the past just doesn’t fit your life or the situation now. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/5-ways-to-reframe-failure">Rather than view it as a failure</a>, what must you change? Learn something new, try a new strategy, involve others with new information.</p>

<p>When old answers don’t work—decide what is in your control to change and adapt.</p>

<h2><strong>4. Your new ideas have nowhere to go. </strong></h2>

<p>Often the best ideas take time. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/are-you-an-original">Adam Grant, author of <em>Originals</em></a>, found through his research that the most innovative original thinkers aren’t the early planners or the <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/6-tips-to-be-a-productive-procrastinator">last-minute procrastinators</a>, but those in the middle who let ideas develop and then take action. Grant references the Warby Parker co-founders, who spent so much time testing and trying out concepts that Grant didn’t invest in them. He assumed that because they were slow to market they wouldn’t find success. He calls it <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/john-c-maxwell-how-to-make-the-most-of-your-mistakes">one of the biggest mistakes of his life</a>.</p>

<p>Rather than let your ideas frustrate you, ask yourself, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-whatever-the-project-is-start-today"><em>What can I do now to get started?</em></a> It might be testing an idea, researching a new business concept or seeking out expert advice to project you forward.</p>

<p>But don’t make big decisions at times of high emotion, such as a divorce, a big change at work, a family loss, a newborn or empty nest. These are periods that might drive decisions based on your current feeling rather than solid reasons to make a change. Give yourself some time for things to level out so you can better assess the situation and what you want.</p>

<p>Use your discomfort. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/3-steps-to-execute-a-successful-idea">Use your new ideas</a> that won’t go away. Thoughts that appear as frustration or uncertainty may be internal indicators that you can do more—that you are ready to make the change.</p>

<p>As women, we advocate for progress—for equality and for breaking the glass ceiling. Yet, on average, women still earn 79 percent of what men earn. Even the most successful actresses, like Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence, earn less than their male co-stars. And in the Standard &amp; Poor’s 500, only 5 percent of companies have female CEOs.</p>
<p>Most women agree that change is needed in our society, businesses and communities. There are signs of progress, but there is much more work to do. In our daily lives, too.</p>
<p>Women can often be each other’s worst critics. We judge each other on our decision to work or not to work, our clothes, our weight, our parenting or our level of success. These biases can be subtle, or not so subtle, in what we think and say—and they perpetuate the cultural bias that we simultaneously want to change.</p>

<p>Here are a few judgments and signs of bias that women reserve just for each other:</p>
<h2><strong>1. Who wears the pants in that family? </strong></h2>
<p>Yes, I have heard this many times—even by women I like. It’s usually asked when the woman is successful and has a point of view. This one isn’t so subtle and reflects how women see their own role in <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-8-traits-of-healthy-relationships">relationships</a>.</p>
<p>Gender bias shows up regularly in everyday life. Take this example: A doctor went shopping for furniture with her husband, and the sales associate enthusiastically shared that everything was 20 percent off that week. She added with a wink, “Your husband is going to be very excited about that!”</p>
<h2><strong>2. She’s too bossy.</strong></h2>
<p>There are lots of adjectives you can use instead of “bossy” but that mean the same thing. <em>“She’s being a b****.” “She’s trying too hard.” “She’s too demanding.” </em>Men aren’t called bossy. <em>“He gets stuff done.” “He’s tough.” “He has a plan!”</em></p>
<p>Yes, there are women—and men—who <em>are</em> too difficult. The true test is if you witnessed the same behavior in a man, does your view change?</p>
<p>As Sheryl Sandberg said, “When a little boy asserts himself, he’s called a ‘leader.’ Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded ‘bossy.’ Words like <em>bossy</em> send a message: <em>Don’t raise your hand or speak up.</em> By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys—a trend that continues into adulthood.”</p>
<p>Beyoncé said it best. “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss.”</p>
<h2><strong>3. She isn’t that successful.</strong></h2>
<p>Women often get the <em>“She’s not qualified”</em> even after achieving accomplishment after accomplishment. Or the <em>“She lucked into it,”</em> <em>“An important male helped her out,”</em> or <em>“She made a mistake.” </em>Our filter of success has a different lens for a woman—and our bias appears.</p>
<p>Successful women can make some men—and women—uncomfortable, because they have stepped outside of a role traditionally expected of women.</p>

<p>And, in many ways, we do it to ourselves. In our desire not to be boastful, we <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/3-tips-to-carry-yourself-with-confidence">minimize our own success</a> through self-deprecation or pawning off our success as luck or “being in the right place at the right time.” When I hear other women doing this (and I do this sometimes, too), I ask them to pause and consider if their male counterparts do the same. The answer is no.</p>
<h2><strong>4. She looks too ________. </strong></h2>
<p>Women face the appearance evaluation—“too this, too that.” For example, Hillary Clinton has received more coverage on her hairstyle, clothes and voice tone than any man of her stature. For men, their appearance must be <em>extremely</em> noticeable to receive top billing.</p>
<p>Particularly in business, women are faced with the double-edged sword of looking attractive, but not <em>too</em> attractive. And, again, as women, we do it to each other.</p>
<p>Carly Fiorina, a recent presidential candidate and former CEO of Hewlett Packard, was the keynote speaker at a technology conference two years ago. At the end of her remarks, the host asked her to comment on Marissa Mayer’s success as Yahoo CEO. Fiorina put the questioner on the spot. She asked, “Why are you asking me about Marissa Mayer, other than that she is also a woman? Would you ask a man to comment on another male CEO? No, you wouldn’t.”</p>
<p>In that awkward moment, she openly pointed out the bias in the question and that because of it, she was viewed as a former <em>female</em> CEO, not a former CEO. She made her point.</p>
<p>We need more honesty with each other on our biases and a call-out when we judge each other.</p>
<p>Test yourself. As we look at political candidates, community leaders, business executives and entrepreneurs, ask yourself, <em>If this were a man, would my reaction be the same?</em></p>
<p>I recently realized my own hidden bias after a comment from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “So now the perception is, yes, women are here to stay [on the Supreme Court]. And yet when I’m asked, ‘When will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court]?’ and I say, ‘When there are nine,’ people are shocked. But there’ve been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.”</p>
<p>Progress is needed in our society and culture. Progress is also needed in how we view each other and in <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-change-begins-with-choice">the choices we make</a>.</p>

<p>Careers are more a colorful art than an exact science, and we are all in different chapters, so you’d think each career phase would require very different habits and behaviors, right? Wrong.</p>

<p>Just last week I met with a recent graduate, a newly promoted manager and a senior executive; they were all thinking about what they wanted next. While you’d think these conversations would be dramatically different, they weren’t—because when I was asked for insights or advice, I realized that I kept returning to the same important themes.</p>

<p>So, what <em>are </em>the habits of those who get where they want to go? Here is my input on the most important considerations in a meaningful career:</p>

<h2><strong>1. Say what you want to happen.</strong></h2>

<p>You can’t claim it if you can’t name it. This is true in negotiating for a new job, a promotion or a new career. There is such power in knowing and verbalizing what you want because you’ve dramatically increased the chances of reaching your goals just by saying it out loud.</p>

<p>You can’t expect others to know more about you than you know about yourself. This is true if it’s your boss, a recruiter or someone you’ve asked to help you network. Even if you aren’t 100 percent sure, take the description of your future as far as you can. No one can do this better than you. State your intent or direction. By doing so, you have invited others in to be part of making your dream a reality.</p>

<h2><strong>2. Stop trying to be the superhero.</strong></h2>

<p>Hero syndrome makes us do some crazy things. We want that thrill of being the smartest one, the most important one, the one who was right! This short-term thrill has long-term consequences.</p>

<p>We do work ourselves that others could do—even better than us. We don’t delegate. We stop listening and collaborating, because we must be the one with the answers. Relationships suffer. And, if there is self-doubt, we privately worry that we’ll be found out if we don’t know everything.</p>

<p>These habits keep us from listening, learning, curiosity and building trusted <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-8-traits-of-healthy-relationships">relationships</a>. This desire to be the hero keeps us alone even when we work with others. The hero has a very short tenure and there is a long-term price to be paid.</p>

<h2><strong>3.</strong> <strong>Keep your mind on impact versus seeking approval.</strong></h2>

<p>This is hands down the most common topic with my coaching clients. The result of seeking approval creates self-protection. We don’t speak up in meetings when the boss is there. We don’t take risks. We lose our persistence when there is resistance or an obstacle.</p>

<p>When driven by the approval of others, our internal questions are, <em>Did they like me? Was I good enough?</em> or<em> Did I screw up?</em> These internal tapes won’t lead you to making a difference, but rather, playing it safe and hoping to never make any waves.</p>

<p>Instead, keep your thoughts on <em>How can I make an impact here? How can I contribute? What is needed that I can offer? </em>and <em>What ideas do I have that will create progress?</em> When you are externally focused on the impact you want to have, the game changes. You become intent on results more than personal applause.</p>

<h2><strong>4. Make sure you are in the right pond.</strong></h2>

<p>If you like fast and you are in a slow pace, you might be in the wrong place. If you love new and innovative and you are in a world of “this is how we’ve always done it,” you might be in the wrong place. If you value free evenings and you are in a 24/7 fast-paced industry, the disconnect is more than you can fix.</p>

<p>Line up what matters most to you with your environment. Without it, you’ll be constantly out of alignment and frustrated.</p>

<h2><strong>5. You’re never “done.”</strong></h2>

<p>Early in my career, I was sure that when I reached a certain level, had an interesting role, led a global team, I’d be there. I’d have reached my goal and my career would be complete. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/rohn-4-tips-for-setting-powerful-goals">Goal</a> accomplished!</p>

<p>I learned a little secret early: A career isn’t a job or an accomplishment. You never reach “there.”</p>

<p>Careers are organic and changing—and unique to you. So many have reached their early career goals and yet are still thinking about what’s next. As we grow and change, it only makes sense that career adjustments will follow. Use this discomfort for good. Careers always change, just like you.</p>

<h2><strong>6. Befriend and behold.</strong></h2>

<p>Careers are more than just the work, but a community of people who you work alongside and know. Relationships are at the core of collaborating and meaningful work. Treat these relationships with respect and care. Make time for keeping in touch. Show interest in others even when life is busy.</p>

<p>This vital community of work friends and relationships will be there for you when you need it most. And helping others grow will surely create some of your most meaningful experiences.</p>

<p>A career is more than a title or a job—it’s how you carry out your life’s work, your way. Spring is the perfect time to ask <em>What next?</em> and <em>What matters most?</em> If you don’t ask, who will?</p>
