Stay ahead in business: strategies and insights for success

When I began interviewing business leaders for my podcast The Inbox Inspiration, I didn’t realize the impact it would have on me. Getting the opportunity to talk to dozens of successful, inspiring individuals has been nothing short of incredible.

Through our conversations, I got VIP access to some of their secrets and advice, what motivated them, what helped them to get where they are today.

Here are nine of their best success lessons (so far!), from them to me to you:
<h2>1. You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.</h2>
My mom always used say, “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.” And she was right on—because millionaires surround themselves with other millionaires.

If we really are the sum of the people we surround ourselves with, it’s so important to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/mom-warned-me-about-running-with-a-bad-crowd">surround yourself with the right ones</a>. Successful people are always networking with each other at events, conferences and mastermind groups.
<h2>2. Money in itself won’t make you happy.</h2>
But money can buy you the freedom to do the things that can make you happy. True happiness comes from filling your time and your days with <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/john-c-maxwell-how-to-carve-out-your-lifes-passion">meaningful pursuits that you’re passionate about</a>.

I’ve met rich people who are incredibly unhappy and poor people in Third World countries who are some of the happiest people I’ve ever encountered. The point is that it’s possible to be happy right now, whether you have $20 or $20 million. By being grateful for what you have, for being alive and for having this day, you’ll be more present and have better perspective.

<h2>3. “It’s not about the goal. It’s about becoming the type of person that can accomplish the goal.”</h2>
The great <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/tony-robbins-on-how-to-achieve-the-extraordinary">Tony Robbins</a> probably knows what he’s talking about.

Most millionaires will tell you it’s not so much about making the money; it’s about growing as a person, growing your business to a point where it’s capable of making money. The journey is far more valuable than the destination.

And once you’ve arrived, the question becomes, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/they-say-to-reach-for-the-moon-so-once-you-reach-it-whats-next">Now what?</a> That’s why it’s so important to enjoy the ride and be grateful for how far you’ve come and what you’ve achieved so far.
<h2>4. Get a mentor so you can get growing.</h2>
Almost every successful person you ask will tell you they had a <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/get-a-mentor-and-get-growing">mentor</a> at some point along the way.

Find someone you admire, look up to—someone who’s where you want to be—and ask them for guidance to help you improve who you are and what you want to become. With their advice, you’ll learn best practices, you’ll be challenged, you’ll be better prepared to succeed.
<h2>5. Like to learn.</h2>
Every entrepreneur and successful person I’ve met is a lifelong learner. They understand the importance of constantly improving, constantly growing.

Driven people self-educate through books, audiotapes, online courses, seminars…. They’re determined to always learn new skills, to keep developing as a person—to never become stagnant. They never stop.

<h2>6. Two (or three or four) income sources are better than one.</h2>
Millionaires know how to put their money and resources to work for them. And almost all of them have at least two more sources of income—investments in financial securities, real estate, angel investing, partnerships.

While multiple sources of income certainly help them increase their wealth, they are laser-focused on one income stream first then diversify once they’ve hit a level of stability.
<h2>7. Hate the gym? Well, learn to hate it a little less.</h2>
Almost every millionaire I’ve interviewed has some sort of rigorous workout routine—weightlifting, marathons and triathlons, running. They’re elite in business and at the gym.

There’s a correlation between breaking down barriers in fitness and breaking them down in business and in your mind. They’re both about strength and confidence, discipline and commitment. Weak won’t cut it. So get workin’ on your fitness—and the rest will seem a little less daunting.
<h2>8. Read—a lot.</h2>
I’ve yet to meet a millionaire who doesn’t do a lot of reading. And I’m not talking about Harry Potter or Hunger Games. I’m talking books with real, practical tips—for personal and professional growth, for people who want to constantly improve themselves and their businesses.

Books are a great way to learn from successful people who may have been where you are now and have something valuable to teach you. It’s like having some of the best business minds of our generation mentor you. Read a lot and read often.

<h2>9. Write down your experiences.</h2>
You don’t have to blog to be a millionaire. But it wouldn’t hurt. A lot of successful people are getting their start from blogging.

<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/5-ways-blogging-changed-my-professional-life">Blogging is a powerful tool</a>, because by documenting your journey and inspirations, you go through a sort of self-discovery, while also growing your reputation and business. If you’re not ready to share everything on a public blog, try keeping handwritten journals instead. The introspective writing process reminds you of what you’ve been through and where you want to go. And writing down your goals is an incredible way to make sure they happen.

<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/10-unforgettable-quotes-by-jim-rohn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jim Rohn said it best</a>: “It is challenging to be a student of your own life, your own future, your own destiny. Don’t trust your memory. When you listen to something valuable, write it down. When you come across something important, write it down. Take the time to keep notes and to keep a journal” (or in my case, a podcast or blog!).

On August 18, 2011, I embarked on one of the greatest adventures of my life. I started blogging.

I didn't know it at the time, but this moment would send ripples across all areas of my life, especially as an aspiring entrepreneur. It would spark a period of intense introspective thinking and ultimately change my life—in more ways that I could have ever imagined.

Really, Jordan? Blogging changed your life- I know that’s what you’re thinking—I’m crazy, or at least exaggerating. And while I know some people find it hard to believe, blogging really has opened up doors for me.

I'm incredibly grateful for where I am in life. I'm a 26-year-old entrepreneur, the CEO of an internet software company. I have built a personal network of incredibly passionate and successful people. Best of all, I love my work, the people I work with and that my office is pretty much anywhere in the world I want it to be. All of these things became possible because I decided to blog.

Is blogging that powerful? The short answer’s yes. Here’s why:

1. It branded me as an expert.

Like <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/2013-success-achiever-of-the-year-jeff-bezos" target="_blank" title="2013 SUCCESS AChiever of the Year: Jeff Bezos | SUCCESS.com" rel="noopener">Jeff Bezos of Amazon</a> says, “A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.”

Before I joined the entrepreneurial ranks, I worked for an online marketing company, and although the job wasn’t my ultimate passion, I was good at it and I liked the work. So I started looking for consulting gigs on the side. By publishing content on what I knew (online marketing, sales and networking), I began <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/how-to-become-an-expert-with-a-capital-e" target="_blank" title="How to Become an Expert (With a Capital E) | SUCCESS.com" rel="noopener">positioning myself as an expert</a> in the field, someone other people would come to for advice, tips, insight. And because I established a professional profile and “portfolio,” I made myself visible and attracted positive attention.

2. It helped me network better.

When like-minded people read my posts, they organically network with me—through comments, retweets, my contact form. And I've connected and built relationships with so many incredible people over the years who originally found me through my blog.

3. It let me quit my corporate job.

As I built up my blog and reputation, I attracted enough attention to secure consulting clients. That income, combined with revenue from various affiliate partnerships and ad sales, allowed me to declare financial independence and quit my “day job.”

Business guru Tom Peters sums it up pretty well: “No single thing in the last 15 years has been more important to me professionally than blogging…. It’s changed my thinking, it’s changed my outlook, it’s the best damn marketing tool, and it’s free.”

4. It inspired me to start my own company.

A few years ago, I moved from the U. S. to Eastern Europe for a job. During this move, I noticed big problems that existed for people traveling and living abroad. A massive number of websites are geo-restricted outside the U.S., meaning people outside of America can't access them—no YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, and definitely no Netflix. On top of the inconvenience, Internet connections around the world are unreliable and unsecure.

So I started searching for a way to solve these problems—and I blogged about the information I stumbled upon, starting conversations about various solutions with other people who were frustrated, too. That’s when I discovered what a Virtual Private Network (VPN) was. Soon after I dove into the topic, learning and sharing everything I could, I launched <a href="https://buffered.com/about" target="_blank" title="About | Buffered.com" rel="noopener">Buffered VPN</a>.

What would I be doing now if I never started writing about what inspired me?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

5. It gave me clarity and purpose.

Writing is the best road to self-discovery, an incredibly introspective process, and by typing out my thoughts and inspirations, I started to see patterns. <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/answer-6-questions-to-reveal-your-life-purpose" target="_blank" title="Answer 6 Questions to Reveal Your Life Purpose | SUCCESS.com" rel="noopener">My answers to questions like, Who am I? and What do I want?</a> became more clear with each post I published.

Now, after several years of blogging, I have a much better idea of what I want out of life and career—and it’s not what I used to unconsciously rattle off when someone would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The clarity I get from writing about the things I’m passionate about has helped me learn a lot about myself.

Blogging isn’t easy. It's a commitment, just like any other, and means you must be determined to keep a regular writing schedule, even when you think no one’s watching.

When I first started blogging in 2011, my entire readership consisted of a handful of friends and my mom, who was one of my first comments ever:

"Great job beginning your blog. I am going to forward it to family and friends who may want to keep in touch with you while you are so far away. I loved reading your commentary and blog intro. Keep blogging.... No doubt by doing so you will inspire and update others and hopefully grow from the experience! Love you, Mom"

Well, Mom, if you're reading this, thanks! Because it’s hard to write when no one is reading—I know. The good news is that there are more than 7 billion people on this planet, so odds are someone else shares your passion, or is at least interested in reading about it, and there’s always the possibility that they’ll stumble upon your ideas.

But even if no one is reading your blog, do it for you, to push yourself to be better, to succeed.

Even <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/4-steps-to-revolutionary-business-growth" target="_blank" title="4 Steps to Revolutionary Business Growth | SUCCESS.com" rel="noopener">Seth Godin</a> says so: "What matters is the humility that comes from writing that forces you to describe why you did something. It doesn’t matter if anyone is reading your blog. You’re doing it for yourself.”

I left a stable office job at 22, traveled a lot and become an Internet entrepreneur in Budapest, Hungary, by 24. Seriously, I did. Want to know how? Here goes:

When I was 22 years old, I had everything I thought I always wanted. I had a good job with a good salary at a successful company, in Budapest of all places. I had a promising career in front of me. Even with that “bright future,” I wasn’t happy. I was fresh out of college, and I was eager to make a lot of money—but I also wanted to travel, to see the world.

I didn’t see the world, though. Instead, I saw the inside of an office, every morning, afternoon and early evening.&nbsp; And by the end of the week I was too drained to go anywhere but home—let alone take a weekend trip. I was losing motivation, and the thought of spending the next 40 or more years working 9-to-5 inside a cubicle scared the crap out of me.

There has to be more than this. So, without a very solid backup plan, I quit.

The seeds of this decision were sown long before I actually quit my job. I’ve always had <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/quiz-do-you-have-the-entrepreneurial-mindset">entrepreneurial aspirations</a>.

As a kid, I used to start summer businesses, and I’d often employ my brothers and sisters as employees. One summer we launched “Bargain Balls,” which was our refurbished golf ball business. My brothers would sneak onto the local course to collect lost balls. We’d hand-wash them for hours and then sell them back to the golfers the following day. Another summer, I operated a pet waste removal service, and I’d go door to door offering to scoop dog poop from my neighbors’ yards. And one year on Thanksgiving, I managed to convince my friends to drive me to a local shopping plaza on Black Friday so I could sell hot chocolate to the people waiting in line—we made more than $300 in less than two hours.

But as I grew up, I lost the courage to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams. It took me a while to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/5-bold-exercises-to-work-your-courage-muscle">find that courage</a> again.

After quitting my corporate job, I met some cool friends in a bar in Budapest. They were operating an online marketing company in town and offered me a job to come join them. I was in no position to say no, because returning to America empty handed was admitting defeat—and I couldn’t do that.

I joined the company, and for a while I tried to sugarcoat my new situation. But at the end of the day, I was just working another job. I was still helping someone else build their business. Even worse, I despised my new role as a consultant. In a traditional job, you have one boss. As a consultant, you manage accounts and every account means you have another boss. I quickly realized I had traded one boss for 10 bosses. Things went downhill pretty fast from there. And after eight months of sugarcoating, I decided I had had enough. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do or how I was going to do it, but I knew I couldn’t spend another minute working for someone else.

I was 23 years old and once again unemployed.

To make ends meet, I knew I had to hustle. I joined LinkedIn and started spamming every business owner who would accept my request to “connect.” I sent 100 emails a day looking for consulting work and for a while I did OK.

I knew I could free up more of my time by further outsourcing the work. I worked with a close friend in Budapest who helped fulfill the freelance work orders, and together we managed to hire a few additional freelancers from the Philippines.

And I slowly realized what I was after. It was more valuable than money—I wanted time. Time to figure out a plan, time to find my passion, time to start a business I believed in… and I wanted to see the world while I was doing it.

So I did what any other 23-year-old would have. I worked hard and I took advantage of my new freedom—<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/blog/the-real-reason-traveling-makes-you-happy">I traveled</a>. A lot. After all, I initially moved to Budapest to do just that, but at this point I had only made it as far as Vienna and Prague.

<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/article/how-to-develop-an-insatiable-hunger">I was hungry</a> to experience new places and new languages and to meet new people.

I ventured off to Greece and the Greek Islands of Mykonos and Ios. I explored Spain and tasted the amazing Tapas in Barcelona and Madrid. I traveled to Rome with some cool people, and I escaped to Paris and Versailles with my girlfriend. I attended the Euro Cup in Lviv, Ukraine, and drank more vodka than I care to admit.

During this time, I stopped consulting through LinkedIn altogether and became an affiliate marketer, selling software through the Internet for a commission. It was a hard grind, but the more I traveled, the more I became addicted to the freedom and the possibility of a life without limits. So I worked harder than ever and kept moving.

I explored the Croatian coast on a boat trip for three days. I lived in Thailand for two months because working on my laptop gave me the freedom to do so. When my little sister came to visit, we embarked on a road trip through Slovenia on our way to Venice, Italy… and then Salzburg and Vienna.

I explored London with some fellow young entrepreneurs, and I ate Haggis in Scotland with a close Scottish friend. And I’ve enjoyed the coffee shops of Amsterdam and Oktoberfest in Munich.

As I continued working hard, I continued traveling hard, any chance I could, using Budapest as my home base.

Through all of my travels, I’ve met incredible people. It dawned on me at a house party I hosted in Budapest just how fortunate I was. As I looked around me I realized that I’ve made friends from all corners of the earth. I counted more than 17 countries represented in that one house.

And it wasn’t long before I met two brilliant guys, a Hungarian and Englishman, who became good friends of mine. I convinced them to join me in starting a software company of our very own, and together we launched <a href="https://buffered.com/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Buffered VPN</a> at the end of summer 2014.

Our company is young and we have ambitious goals, so I’ve limited my travel for the time being—but that’s a conscious decision. Every day I get to wake up and do the things I love. I don’t dread work—because, as cliché as it might be, work just doesn’t feel like work when you do what you love.

I’m not a millionaire (yet!), but I’ve designed a life that I’m passionate about, I’ve traveled to some amazing places, and I’ve surrounded myself with some incredible people in the process.

The best part? I’m only 25 years old. I’m just getting started.
