Describe your perfect day. Where would you wake up? Where would you be? How would you feel? What would you do? Who would be with you?&nbsp;



When was the first time someone asked you those questions? According to best-selling author and business and performance coach Jairek Robbins, most people say they were “today years old” the first time they heard the question.



But for Robbins, that was far from the case. He first had to answer those questions for himself when he was 8 years old. Maybe that’s a product of who his parents are: His father is famed author, coach and motivational speaker Tony Robbins, and his mother was a coach who taught people how to overcome limiting beliefs about themselves by breaking bricks with their hands.



Answering the question about the life he wanted gave the younger Robbins the tools to make his vision a reality. It all starts with a change in your thoughts.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-mountains-to-climb">Two mountains to climb</h2>



Over the course of his career, Robbins has helped countless people <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-a-to-dont-list-can-help-you-achieve-your-goals/">achieve their goals</a>—often despite significant traumas or limitations they might have experienced.&nbsp;



How does he do it? A lot goes into it, but one of the most important parts is not ignoring the problems. You have to address them to move forward, Robbins said.



“It's never too late to have a perfect childhood,” he said. “And most people think what I got is what I have and what I have is all I’ll ever get.”



But when you take the time to go back and address the struggles from your past, you can truly unlock the future you’re after. Robbins likes to split this journey into two mountains everyone needs to climb.



“Your first mountain is what you get from life,” he said. “And your second mountain is what you give to life.”



Many people Robbins works with want to be on the second mountain—giving abundantly to others and serving the causes that matter to them. There’s nothing wrong with that, but something else has to come first.



“They haven't healed what needs to be healed on their first mountain,” Robbins said. “Problems don't cease to exist just because you choose to ignore them.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-you-have-enough">Do you have enough?</h2>



The point of all of this coaching and self-exploration is to live a rich, abundant life that makes you happy. But to be able to do that, you have to understand what you need in order to feel like you <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/flourish-and-thrive/202108/how-much-is-enough-feel-happy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">have enough to be happy</a>, Robbins said.



How much is enough? The answer is going to be different for everyone, Robbins said.



While living in a village in Uganda without electricity or toilets, Robbins needed very little to have a great life. And after he was told in that village that he got malaria and only had a few days left to live, he needed even less.



“I gave away all my stuff because I learned on that trip to Uganda that I didn't need anything,” he said. “I just needed my health. I was told I had six days left to live and I came back and went, ‘Damn, if I can breathe easy and my heart works, I don't need a single thing more than that.’”



A Southern California native, he felt that meditation and vegetable juice would do the trick, but his doctor in Uganda didn’t agree. The parasites had multiplied in his blood. At a certain point, he had 55,000 parasites per red blood cell. In other words, he had way too many.



His doctor said he had about six days to live if he didn’t make a change. He took the medicine, and his mother traveled all the way to Africa to make sure he was OK. And he was, but the experience left him grateful for his health. It was all he needed to live a great life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-be-the-moonlight-in-the-dark">Be the moonlight in the dark</h2>



Doing the foundational work of addressing what life has thrown at you is step one. Getting to a place where you feel like you have enough to live a good life is next. Then you can truly begin to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/serve-others-to-get-all-you-want/">serve those around you</a>. To get there, you have to remember to meet people where they are.



“Most people want to be the sunshine in someone's day and bring light and love into their day,” Robbins said. “Sometimes, you’ve got to choose to be the moonlight in someone's darkness. Sometimes, you’ve got to choose to be there for someone when it's all darkness to them.”



Jairek’s father, Tony, says to trade expectations for appreciation. So, appreciate that people are in their own places in the process; meet them where they are to truly serve them.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-next-phase-am-i-loved-enough">The next phase: Am I loved enough?</h2>



What comes after that second mountain once you’ve addressed your past and served those you want to serve? Robbins believes it’s about getting to a place <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-ways-to-open-up-and-receive-more-love/">where you feel loved</a> and accepted.



<a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/maintaining-friendships-is-hard-heres-why-its-crucial-for-your-well-being/">Building meaningful friendships</a> and relationships as we grow older has always been a challenge. But the advent of new technologies has, in some respects, pushed people even further apart.



It’s worth the work to connect with others, of course, but there’s a big secret Robbins likes to share: You don’t have to wait for the validation to come to you; you can seek it out for yourself.



“I like the concept of a selfie,” Robbins said. “So, take your phone, put it in selfie mode. And I want you to turn on your favorite loving, love-filled song, the song that makes you feel loving or loved. Look into your own eyes. And I want you to do three things. Identify what you appreciate about yourself, identify what you acknowledge about yourself, identify what you love about yourself.”



Do it every morning for 10 or 15 minutes, he said. Over time, your bucket begins to fill.



“And as the bucket fills and fills, at some point, the bucket will start to overflow,” Robbins said. “And when you talk about the feeling of ‘I am loved enough,’ when your bucket of love is overflowing, you will flow into everyone around you and only wish that they felt the same kind of abundance you do.”

At age 19, Anthony O'Neal was drowning in debt. He was homeless. He felt directionless.



Fast forward to today, where he’s a No. 1 national best-selling author and financial freedom guru. O’Neal’s story is far from over, but what happened between those early days of financial struggle and his breakthrough successes is a saga in its own right.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-critical-lack-of-financial-information">A critical lack of financial information</h2>



Money matters have not been at the forefront of O’Neal’s mind for his entire life. In fact, money was a subject that rarely—if ever—came up during his childhood.



He grew up in a deeply religious family. That meant church seven days a week—and not routinely discussing money or other similarly important matters.



“The only thing we talked about was, when you get paid money, just give 10% to the church,” he said. “You do whatever you want with the other 90%.”



For O’Neal, the issue wasn’t with giving money to the church. It was doing “whatever you want” with the rest.



“No one taught me <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-key-to-building-true-wealth/">how to build wealth</a>,” he said. “No one taught me how to start a business. No one taught me <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/6-tips-for-investing-with-confidence/">how to invest</a>.”



In other words, he didn’t have the information he needed to avoid some bad financial choices in college. Those choices left him drowning in around $25,000 in debt by the young age of 19.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-money-mindset-turning-point">The money mindset turning point</h2>



O’Neal wasn’t content to stay in the situation he found himself in at 19. He wanted more. He wanted better. So, he started doing some research.



He came across someone who would change his life: Dave Ramsey.



To be fair, Ramsey has changed quite a few lives. But O’Neal felt Ramsey’s message resonating with his desire for financial freedom so deeply that he would go on to partner with him professionally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-to-do-when-financial-times-are-tight">What to do when financial times are tight</h2>



There’s little doubt that we’re headed for a recession, but what is in doubt is <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-prepare-for-a-recession/">how we should react</a> to it.&nbsp;



O’Neal is not one of the people suffering from doubt about what should be done. He offered some advice to keep in mind as a possible recession sets in.



It starts with acknowledging where we are—in a tough financial time—and not trying “beat around the bush,” he said.



“And then focus on the things that you can control, and do not focus on the things that you cannot control,” O’Neal said. “You can't control what the market is going to do. But you can control what your house is going to do.”



What your house should do is up to you, but O’Neal suggested looking for ways to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/financialfinesse/2022/07/12/how-to-prepare-your-financial-life-for-a-recession-and-thrive/?sh=7057cf473167" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">take advantage of a downturn</a> as if it is a financial opportunity, not an obstacle. To illustrate his advice, he invoked the pandemic.



“The internet made more millionaires during COVID than it did pre-COVID,” he said. “So, for me, I'm looking at what opportunities are available. It may be low today, but it's a roller coaster—some go down, some go up, but you don't jump off. You stay on it until it just comes to an end.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-parable-of-the-frog">The parable of the frog</h2>



O’Neal recalled a time in his school days when science classrooms would boil the frogs they were going to dissect. He pointed out that this method is no longer legal, but it’s how it was done at that time.



His teacher told him not to go fast, but to boil the frog gradually. They put the frog in the pot and turned the burner on at low heat. In small increments, they turned up the heat, and the frog remained calm. Soon, the frog was sleeping. Soon after that, it was dead.



O’Neal was upset, and he asked his teacher what had just happened—why didn’t the frog try to jump out? The teacher explained that frogs get comfortable in heat, so gradually turning up the heat makes them sleepy instead of frantic.



Later, during what he called a “rough season” of his life, O’Neal realized something.



“The frog didn't actually die in its sleep,” he said. “The frog died in his comfort zone. So, what I want to tell people during this season is don't allow your comfort zone to become the very same thing that kills your dreams. Don't allow your comfort zone to become your kill zone.”



In other words, when tough financial times roll around, don’t get too comfortable or complacent just getting by. Don’t let a new financial normal destroy your dreams of success.



An easy way to make sure you’re prepared for the next season? Remember O’Neal’s six Ps: “Proper prior planning prevents poor performance.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-away-and-believing">Breaking away and believing</h2>



What convinced O’Neal to break away from a new level of success working alongside financial guru Ramsey? It was a realization that he already had what it takes to reach new levels of success.



“What I've had to do is realize that I don't have to have 12 million followers like him,” O’Neal said. “I only really need a good 2,000 people to spend about $500 on me to make a million dollars in one year. And I was like, ‘I have 2,000 people; I can inspire 2,000 people.’”



And inspiring even one person starts with character.&nbsp;



“Because if I serve, love, and empower and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-science-of-changing-other-people/">impact your life</a>, then you're going to go and spread my message,” O’Neal said. “I have a few ‘simple Cs’ that I follow: Character builds your content, <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-keys-to-consistent-community-growth/">your content builds the community</a> and community will build your career.”



It’s more than a logical progression; It’s a mindset shift. And so far, it’s working pretty well for O’Neal.

They call her The Negotiator. You might think that’s a nickname Fotini Iconomopoulos earned in corporate boardrooms or business school, but Iconomopoulos has been The Negotiator since early childhood. It was her family who gave her the nickname, because she always took a side and made her case.



It turns out that the nickname came with a healthy helping of foreshadowing pointing to what would become an incredible career as an expert negotiator, communicator and author.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-a-better-life-on-her-terms">Building a better life on her terms.</h2>



Growing up in a Greek-Canadian household, Iconomopoulos found herself constantly exposed to negotiation. This began when she saw the bartering process during the times her family visited Greece, where bartering for goods is much more commonplace.



“It was an environment where it was totally normal to wheel and deal with somebody,” she said. “My mom's that stealth negotiator that people don't realize that they're negotiating with; she's so good at it. But my dad is that very obvious sort of negotiator.”



She began to learn about <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescoachescouncil/2020/07/08/15-critical-skills-required-to-become-an-excellent-negotiator/?sh=16b6ccd52412" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the art of negotiation</a> through those early experiences, but those early experiences also exposed her to a patriarchal worldview in which girls were expected to grow up to become mothers, not <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-women-are-rising-in-business/">world-shaking businesswomen</a>.



She found herself constantly outside of the norm, negotiating her way to the future she wanted—the one her family ultimately supported, but not without some pushback.



“It's a blessing and a curse,” Iconomopoulos said. “It's really been wonderful to have a set of values instilled in me and to watch family members and other people from my culture, who work really hard, who came to countries where they didn't speak the language, who overcame so much adversity, and it was so inspirational. But at the same time, I’m going, OK, you did all this, but now you want to put me in a box?”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-negotiation-nature-or-nurture">Negotiation: Nature or nurture?</h2>



Where does the fire to <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/finding-your-voice-advocating-and-negotiating-for-yourself-as-a-woman-in-the-workplace/">advocate for yourself</a> and what you really want—despite any pushback and biases you may face—come from? Does it come from within, or is it a product of your experiences and upbringing?



For Iconomopoulos, it’s both. Her older sister fit much better into the mold her family had in mind, suggesting that it was simply in Iconomopoulos’ nature to more passionately argue for what she wanted.&nbsp;



On the other hand, Iconomopoulos saw that her parents’ dream for her was to have a better life than what they had. That was a goal instilled in her from an early age, and she <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/ask-the-coach-how-can-i-best-set-myself-up-to-crush-my-goals/">worked hard to achieve it</a>.



She simply interpreted her parents’ vision differently than they did. And it led to a lot of struggle and a ton of negotiation. Iconomopoulos recalled the day she called her father to tell him she had just gotten a book deal with leading publisher HarperCollins.



“And he goes, ‘OK, so I saw your godfather this morning. He's asking me, when are you going to get married and have some babies?’ I was like, wait, did you not just hear what I said to you?” she said.



Ultimately, Iconomopoulos said, her family takes a lot of pride in her accomplishments. But much of it is thanks to her constantly-sharpened negotiating skills.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-advocate-for-yourself-and-what-you-re-worth">How to advocate for yourself and what you’re worth.</h2>



Running her own business and helping others in the same position to do so more successfully has taught Iconomopoulos some things about advocating for what you’re really worth—whether in salary negotiations or speaking gigs.



The problem is that we tend to undersell ourselves. It’s an issue often born out of the fear that we’re not going to be perceived as worthy of the cost.



“That is a completely normal response, and the bias that we have toward ourselves—the fact that we discredit how valuable our services and our time is for others—is also really normal,” she said.



Normal, but not something to continue. Iconomopoulos recalled the first time <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/3-tips-to-sell-like-a-pro/">she was pricing a proposal</a> after starting her own business. She asked for advice from her friends, and one of her friends gave her a gem that has stuck with her ever since:



“He said, ‘Whatever you're thinking, double it,’” she said. “And I did. No joke. No exaggeration.”



Starting high opens up two possibilities, Iconomopoulos said: a pleasant surprise when the client or employer accepts the first price or a chance to better understand what the client or employer is looking for and reach a mutually agreeable price point.



“The reality is that if I put a price that's too high, and I'm cooperative, then we can continue the conversation until we find a price that's right,” she said.



Another important consideration, however, is the true scope of any engagement you are trying to price. It’s important to do your research—through Googling, speaking with others and asking direct questions of the client—before you make your proposal, Iconomopoulos said. And there’s nothing wrong with pausing to do that.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-empower-yourself-by-empowering-others">Empower yourself by empowering others.</h2>



Iconomopoulos has her MBA and an impressive resume, but the whole reason the author of <a href="https://amzn.to/3nOfpVo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Say Less, Get More: Unconventional Negotiation Techniques to Get What You Want</a> has the job she does is because she started <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/everyone-has-a-story-heres-how-to-make-yours-resonate/">sharing her stories</a>—including those of discrimination and unfair treatment.



Years ago, Iconomopoulos said, the number of seats at the table for women was so limited that it created a “scarcity mentality.” Women who had reached the top were worried that other women were going to steal their seats.&nbsp;



But why not bring more seats to the table? That’s what you do when you <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/how-to-use-your-influence-to-help-others/">help others succeed</a> in their professional negotiations to reach the top, she said. And it can benefit you, too.



“Because society tells us there's a reciprocity—when you help someone, they're going to want to help you, too,” Iconomopoulos said. “And when you do it because you just want to put something good out into the universe, it comes back to you.”



The same principle applies in negotiation, she pointed out. “When you are collaborative and you’re doing something you know is going to help someone, they're going to try and find ways to go, ‘Oh, well, what can I do that's going to be valuable to this person?”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-be-a-victor-not-a-victim">Be a victor, not a victim.</h2>



In moments when Iconomopoulos has faced toxic environments or outright discrimination, she has had what she calls an out-of-body experience.



“I'm watching it play out and I go, ‘I am not going to allow you to make me a victim in this moment. I am not going to be a victim of my circumstances. I'm not going to be a victim of bias or discrimination,’” she said.



The result, she noted, is that you turn the situation into something positive. You negotiate with the mentality of a victor, and that makes you more likely to be the victor.



“You can channel this victor energy and go, ‘How can I make this a moment to look back on and be so proud of?’ And that builds more moments like that from there,” Iconomopoulos said.

The fear and chaos of the pandemic appeared to be waning, and Laura Gassner Otting was feeling good. She had spent the previous year reinventing her business, her oldest child was getting college acceptance letters in the mail, her marriage was healthy and she was doing the 75 Hard Challenge.&nbsp;



As part of the challenge, she had to take a picture of herself every day. And that’s when she saw it. A little spot on her abs. Within a week, her entire body was covered with scaly welts that hurt and itched. She gained 18 pounds in two weeks and stopped sleeping.



It took two months and 32 blood tests before it was confirmed: Otting had a rare autoimmune disease that affects just a few hundred people in the U.S. It had no specific treatment and no specific cure.&nbsp;



Everything she had worked so hard to build—an illustrious career that included a stint in the Clinton White House, a wildly successful executive search pedigree, a Washington Post&nbsp; best-selling book and the sale of a company she built from the ground up—was under threat.



Thanks to an off-label medication, several rounds of chemo and a healthy stroke of luck, Otting is now in remission, but the road to this moment, in which her next book, Wonderhell, is about to come out, has been both difficult and enlightening.

The title of Otting’s upcoming book, Wonderhell, refers to a very specific moment in time. She found herself on the best-seller list, right behind Michelle Obama.&nbsp;



In a short time, she found herself everywhere, including on Good Morning America and at an event where she was the opening act for activist Malala Yousafzai. At the moment she <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/18-out-of-the-box-ideas-to-spark-creative-inspiration/">conceived of the idea</a>, she was on a plane, and she couldn’t sleep.



“So I open my laptop and I write this long screed on Facebook about how I don't even know where I am anymore,” she said. “And all I know is that I’m between the blur that was the past and the blur that would be the future. And the space I'm in right now is wonderhell.”



It’s wonderful, but it’s a kind of hell. You’ve <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/ask-the-coach-how-can-i-best-set-myself-up-to-crush-my-goals/">achieved something great</a>, and your psyche walks in and asks, “What’s next?” She had found the perfect word to describe the burden of potential.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-success-is-not-a-final-destination">Success is not a final destination</h2>



What Otting describes is the problem of success in general. We think it will get easier when we do the next big thing, but it never does.



“That’s because it turns out that success is not a final destination at all,” she said. “It's a portal, and through that portal, you <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/continually-reach-your-potential/">get to see your potential</a>. The work you do opens more doors than you ever thought possible.”&nbsp;



The next question is, of course, whether you’re going to go for it. And if you don’t go for it, will you regret it?



No matter the answer, Otting said, you’re unsettled. But among the mixed emotions, you will find something else: an invitation.&nbsp;



“The world tells you… that the discomfort you have is a limitation telling you that you should slow down,” she said. “But the truth is it's actually your invitation to speed up. It shows you that you're on the right path, and it shows you what you're made of.”

Exciting as wonderhell is, it also takes away from your ability to enjoy your successes. You want to feel something particular when you know success is coming—the way Otting anticipated she would feel before she sold her company—and then you don’t feel it. So how can you experience success more vibrantly?



The key, Otting said, is about reexamining your definition of success. The definition of success you absorbed in your teenage years—when someone told you to pick a path and when your decision-making frontal lobe was not fully developed—may not be truly yours. The checklist with the corner office and designated parking spot may not be about you.



“It’s really about thinking about where you really find joy,” Otting said. “What do you love to do? And does what you love to do actually look like your inbox, your to-do list, your calendar?”



Find what you love, Otting said, and <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/5-questions-to-help-turn-your-passion-into-profit/">build a career around it</a>. That’s how you can truly experience your successes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confidence-comes-from-competence">Confidence comes from competence</h2>



As an executive search professional, Otting saw a lot of people who had limited themselves. They didn’t <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/8-daily-tips-for-building-self-confidence/">believe in their own potential</a> and lacked the confidence to change where they stood. Otting, now a long-distance runner, can relate with not having the confidence to believe you can do something great.



“I didn't run my first mile until I was 39 years old,” she said. “I was about to turn 40. And everything just hurt.”



It wasn’t long before she found herself running a marathon. How did she develop the confidence to attempt 26.2 miles?



“Confidence comes from competence,” she said. “And competence comes from putting one foot in front of the other over and over and over.”&nbsp;

Otting’s experience with <a href="https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/diseases/7401/pityriasis-rubra-pilaris" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pityriasis rubra pilaris</a>, the rare autoimmune disease that struck her in early 2021 was, in a word, traumatic. She felt hopeless and even pictured a world that didn’t have her in it. When it started looking like she could get some normalcy back, she had to ask herself whether she was going back to the life she really wanted.



It’s a question that many people are asking themselves as the pandemic appears to wane and life returns to something more recognizable.



“For so many people, the answer is a resounding ‘Hell, no,’” she said. “And you don’t just go out and change everything about your life; you change a little bit here and a little bit here and a little bit here. And as you start <a href="https://successcom.wpenginepowered.com/the-secret-to-making-your-habits-stick/">making those changes into habits</a> and those habits into your persona, then the next thing doesn't seem as scary.”



With time, your goals become clearer and easier to set, she said. “You keep proving to yourself that, with competence, you can do bigger things and that you have the confidence to go after them.”
