Why can’t we have clothing that we only wear once?

This is the question Jennifer Hyman, CEO and co-founder of Rent the Runway, asked herself when forming her innovative retail business. At Rent the Runway, you don’t own your purchase—you rent clothing for a limited amount of time and give it right back. Instead of owning piles of expensive clothes, you own moments, like event photos on Instagram filled with a variety of outfits you never had to repeat.

A closet overhaul in general was long overdue, Hyman says. With all the subscription services that allow you to stream music and TV shows in an all-you-can-eat manner, why not clothing? And with the connection between clothing and confidence, the feeling of wearing something that makes you look and feel incredible, Hyman saw the potential to create something amazing.

“We are helping women express themselves and feel awesome about themselves, and I think that does change the course of your day,” Hyman says. “It does change your ability to just go for it.”
