The Words Every Schoolchild Should Say

“I like me. I love me. I’m a good kid. There’s greatness in me.”

Last fall, my 4-year-old son came home reciting these words that he’d learned at pre-school. I was simply floored. “What is that?” I asked. “My mantra,” his squeaky voice replied with a surprising matter-of-factness. He continued, “… because I’m a leader, not a follower.”

And that’s when I decided I’d never let him let go of those words. I grabbed my camera and recorded his mantra. So, as my husband and I look forward to our son's first day of Kindergarten, together we will recite these words:
