The Choice Is Yours

Sometimes the right decision gets made for you.

Almost a year and a half ago, we approached Megyn Kelly and her representatives to gauge her interest in being on the cover of SUCCESS sometime in 2016. From the outside looking in, we had a sense that the values which made her a star were pretty closely aligned with those of our readers, and in an election year, we thought she had a chance to shine bright.

When the reply came back quickly, we knew how right we were—we had the perfect cover figure, and it was immediately clear how an entire issue would shape up around her.

She’ll do it, the email read, but only if it’s the November issue.

There couldn’t be a better time for Kelly and SUCCESS to come together than now, smack-dab in the middle of election season, when the country’s big decision is on the mind of voters. Kelly knew what she wanted, and she moved decisively to make it happen. That self-assurance, clear-sightedness and bold action to achieve a goal is the impetus for The Decision Issue.

Helping you mold clarity and determination is our goal in this month’s edition of SUCCESS.

Kelly is known for asking tough questions of others, but her life has pivoted time and again when she asked one of herself: Am I settling for more? In fact, the personal motto “settle for more” is the title of her new book. It is at the heart of the self-examination that has allowed her to carve out a fulfilling personal life and career, as she continually forces herself to make decisions that are in her best interests.

Helping you mold clarity and determination—just as Kelly has done—is our goal in this month’s edition of SUCCESS.

For this issue, we talked to achievers of all stripes and analyzed some of the most successful visionaries in business to help understand how they plot a course for their future achievement. More often than not, as you’ll see in our package “The Best Decision I Ever Made,” “On Autopilot” and in “The Secret Weapon of Great Teamwork,” the key is to identify your passion, sketch a clear path for your future progress, and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by detours and hurdles along the way.

Also this month, we aim to help sharpen your ability to make choices when the future is not clear, or time is of the essence. We look into the science of instinct in “Go With Your Gut” and put you in the role of baseball umpire in “Fair or Foul” to show how it is oftentimes necessary to block out the big picture and focus on the process to make the right calls in the moment. And we turn our attention to the subject of problem solving—finding clean, simple, effective solutions—in “Think Slow,” one of my favorite stories to ever appear in the magazine. It’s sure to change the way you consider the possibilities in your life and work, reshaping big-picture and small-picture thinking alike.

Through the rest of the issue and in the SUCCESS Talks audio, you’ll find countless thoughts and suggestions to improve your decision-making and your quality of life. By subscribing to SUCCESS or picking us up on the newsstand, you’ve already made one great choice—to open your mind to ideas and strategies to help you reach your potential. Only you can decide its limits.
