This week’s assignment is about being inspired by what your competitors do well. This week’s assignment is to do some snooping. Let’s break down one common element of most any business–social media. How do your competitors use Facebook or Twitter? Do they use any of the newer social media niche sites such as Pinterest or Google+? What’s there to learn from them? The social media experts from SUCCESS.com weigh in for this exercise for your small business.

Facebook

Look at your competitors who have a Facebook business page set up and evaluate:

– Do they use the new Facebook Timeline feature?
– How many followers do they have?
– Do they post often and what about?
– Do they engage with their fans by responding to wall comments?

  • Bright graphic elements such as Timeline, interactive pages that engage fans and frequent posting are all best practices for Facebook. Now, what do your competitors do well with their Facebook pages that you can emulate?

Twitter

Look at your competitors who are active on Twitter and evaluate:

– Do they have a personalized background or wallpaper that brands their business?

– How many followers do they have?

– Do they follow as many people as follow them?

– Do they post often and what about?

– Do they engage readers with good content, rather than try to sell them something?

  • Providing good content and retweeting relevant industry news are all best practices for Twitter. Now, follow your competitors on Twitter and see what information you could provide to the Twittersphere.
