Marilyn Paul on Why You Need a Day of Rest
This episode is sponsored by FreshBooks.
We live in a culture where busyness is mistaken for success. If we’re not moving, we’re not achieving, some seem to think. Our addiction to speed isn’t just hurting our productivity, but our happiness and relationships, too. Marilyn Paul tackles this topic in her new book, An Oasis in Time. Drawing on the historically religious definition of the Sabbath, Paul takes SUCCESS.com's Shelby Skrhak along her journey to carve out time for actual rest and relearning to love her life just as it is.
This interview appears on the SUCCESS Talks Collection, available in the December 2017 edition of SUCCESS magazine.

The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, which means pause or stop. "In Jewish tradition 2600 years ago, people stopped to pay attention to another part of their minds, hearts and souls, and that renews them very deeply," Paul says.
Paul says the benefits of stopping or taking a Sabbath are compounded. When you rest, you quiet your mind, which helps us connect better with other people. Connection not only helps us feel better, it helps satisfy our innate need for human interaction and connection. Satisfying that need helps us live longer and live better, studies have shown.
A Sabbath doesn't have to be an entire day. Start with an hour and practice learning to rest longer as a skill you build.
- Think of the Sabbath or rest as an athlete's workout regimen: Work for 60 minutes, then rest for 10. Work, then rest.
Favorite quote from this episode:
"The natural way our minds work is to take an action and rest. Act and rest. That’s what makes us productive."
