In this episode of Behind the Brand, Bryan Elliott talks to entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, of Paul Mitchell hair products and Patrón Spirits, for tips on starting a business, and about how the process has changed over the years.
Becoming established takes time—entrepreneurs should move slowly through the building phase, DeJoria says. To be successful, new entrepreneurs should focus on offering great products and making sure they’re ready to push past disappointment.
“Be prepared for a lot of rejection. If you’re prepared for it when it happens, it’s not going to shock you and disappoint you and send you down a negative trail,” he says.
The good news is it’s easier to start a business today than it was in the past. DeJoria says the internet and an improved economy are two key reasons.
“We had more competition then than what we’d have today,” he says. “So it’s all about making it happen because you believe in it.”
