How I Succeed in the YouEconomy: Driving Change

Youeconomy Drivingchange

Ronald Porter, 51, Lyft driver since 2016

I joined Lyft because…

I was told it was a good company, and I wanted to try it out for myself. I used to be a truck driver. I did that for 10 years, but it kept me away from home for too long. I like Lyft because there’s more freedom. You’re actually working for yourself. You work the hours you want to work and stop when you want to.

When I’m not driving, I…

Started a nonprofit organization [Port Productions; PortProductionBDS.com] where I’m going to be working with kids between the ages of 5 and 17. There are a lot of kids who don’t have structured activities during the summertime. We’re going to be teaching music lessons, theatrical arts, audio engineering, photography and other performing arts. We’re trying to interest them in something they might be able to take a little further. Every individual on this earth is endowed with at least one gift. If we can help identify that gift, we can build better people. I want to help our future, and the future is our children.

You need to push yourself because…

You have to be motivated. You can’t expect to get out here when you feel like it and expect the money to be there for you. You have to learn the system and the area.

I enjoy driving for Lyft because…

I get to meet a lot of different people. I’m learning every day. I’m learning something new every time I move around. A lot of the people I’ve met have helped me with some of the ideas I’m working toward. Some of the instructors who will be teaching in my program I’ve met driving for Lyft. It’s like another way of  networking.
