Dell: Entrepreneurship Is the “Economic Engine”

“If entrepreneurship is the engine of innovation, technology is the fuel,” Michael Dell told the SXSW Interactive audience, many of whom were startup founders, technology innovators and small business owners. Entrepreneurship, privacy and activism were the predominant themes of the Austin tech conference, which kicked off today with Dell, Google’s Eric Schmidt, actress Rosario Dawson and others.

Dell made a few remarks on the power of entrepreneurism before introducing panelists Carley Roney, co-founder of The Knot, Stephen Kaufer, co-founder of TripAdvisor and Jeff Housenbold, CEO of Shutterfly.

Roney urged women to encourage young girls into engineering. “Any woman who has a chance to volunteer in the schools, please take it because it’s important to get more girls into technology,” said Roney, whose company portfolio includes The Knot for brides to be, The Nest for aspiring homeowners and The Bump for expectant moms.
