Audio

Summary

For the last 30 years, Deepak Chopra has been at the forefront of the meditation revolution in the West. His 91st book, Total Meditation, was released just last week. It offers a complete exploration and reinterpretation of the physical, mental, emotional, relational and spiritual benefits that this practice can bring. Time magazine named him in their Top 100 Heroes and Icons of the last century. He’s best friends with the Dalai Lama, is the most influential person in Lady Gaga’s life and officiated Alicia Keyes’ wedding, in addition to the 16 million people who follow his deeply spiritual teachings across social media.

When Deepak was a child, his mother used to tell him there are two divine goddesses: the goddess of wisdom and the goddess of abundance. Every night, she would tell him a story about one of the goddesses, and the story would end in a moment of crisis—she would stop at a cliffhanger when everybody was in trouble and say, “Why don’t you dream up the ending? And make sure it’s a happy ending and it’s a love story.” So Deepak would go to bed thinking of, What is the happy ending? Then he would wake up in the morning and share with her his story. That, his mother told him, is the key to success: It doesn’t matter what is happening, the ending can be a success if the story is a love story.

The story was always about wisdom, which is what Deepak wanted to know: What is the meaning of life? What happens to us after die? Is there a divine intelligence? Why do people suffer? Listen to the full episode to hear Deepak’s story and discover more of his deep wisdom.

A few lessons from Deepak…

  • If you want to be successful, you have to be independent. You have to be centered, and you have to be creative, you have to be visionary, you have to be the change you want to see in the world—irrespective of what is going on in the world, because the good and the bad will always be there.
  • Think of success as 1) the progressive realization of worthy goods, or goods that improve the condition of humanity and alleviate suffering, 2) the ability to love and have compassion, and 3) always being centered so you can be creative, not at the mercy of every critic.
