Slow Down and Balance the Hustle

December 24, 2017

When I was growing up, my family spent a lot of time in West Texas, the promised land of oil and football. As much as my brother and I loathed the seven-hour drive from Dallas to Amarillo, we did love the time we spent visiting my grandparents there—time that seemed to stand still. We loved to run through the fields of the family farm, join our grandmother for a ladies’ lunch and sneak into my grandfather’s wood shop. We loved to hide in the wood shop for hours, the smell of sawdust surrounding us as we played, laughed and avoided chores like snapping peas or, worse, eating them.

As we got older, our time playing and laughing in the wood shop decreased. The visits to West Texas eventually stopped. We started moving faster through life, each of us suddenly caught in the hustle.

Recently I realized I longed for those days when time slowed down. My brother and I, both with families of our own now, have moved to a small neighborhood outside of Dallas, surrounded by farms. We live on the same street, just a few doors down. Now my brother’s garage has turned into a wood shop. He makes beautiful farmhouse-style pieces much like my grandfather did, including the bench we sit on at family dinners and the shelves that hold a photo of my grandparents on their farm. We have recreated memories of our younger selves.

In the time between childhood and where I am today, I’ve learned to balance the hustle and appreciate time enough to slow down when I can. Here at SUCCESS, I work tirelessly to help our audience become the best versions of themselves through the full array of products and services we provide, including SUCCESS Accelerator and our frequent digital courses. It’s a job I don’t take lightly, and I’m happy to hustle for, but not without slowing down for my team and allowing everyone time to play and laugh. The harder you work, it seems, the more you enjoy the slow times.
