After years working in the restaurant industry, Kelvin and Mandy Slater decided they were done working as cooks, servers, bartenders and managers. The married couple wanted to be their own bosses, so in 2003 they started their own restaurant, which grew to five locations before they sold it in 2015.
The couple then came across an opportunity at Ponce City Market in Atlanta that led them to create their own company, Slater Hospitality, which oversees a group of restaurants located at the market.
Kelvin has been a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization for more than three years. “It’s awesome and humbling being around other entrepreneurs that are growing their business,” he says, adding that his experience has taught him to be intentional in his relationships with his wife and children.
For entrepreneurs considering going into business with their significant others, Kelvin offers these tips:
- It is a marriage, so treat it with respect.
- Set aside time weekly to discuss family, goals and each other.
- Plan date nights.
- Develop key people in your business.
