2016 SUCCESS Achiever of the Year: Lin-Manuel Miranda

Achievers Miranda

“Sometimes a line enters your head, and you’re so grateful for it.”

Miranda wrote the book, music and lyrics for the Broadway hit Hamilton: An American Musical, based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers. In 2016 Miranda and the show received dozens of awards for their production. With a diverse cast of predominantly black and Latino actors, Hamilton attracted seasoned Broadway-goers and young first-timers alike to the theater for a show that simultaneously educated and entertained. The play’s popularity made it one of New York City’s hottest events in 2016, with tickets selling for more than $10,000 on secondary markets. In December, Miranda released The Hamilton Mixtape. Next Hamilton will go on tour in various U.S. cities. Miranda, who will not go on tour, will spend much of 2017 involved in the production of Mary Poppins Returns, expected to hit theaters in 2018.

  • 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
  • 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album
  • Record-setting 16 Tony Award nominations (11 wins, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score)
