Popular Fitness Myths Busted! There’s a sea of information out there about getting fit and staying healthy. Unfortunately, not all of it is accurate. Let’s debunk three of the most popular myths floating around gyms and health clubs today. Plus, find out if there’s any truth hidden behind the lard (no pun intended). 1. Treadmills Are Easier on Your Knees. Simply not true. The pressure (body weight) you exert on your joints is the same whether you’re running on a treadmill or pounding the pavement. As knowledgeable personal trainers will attest, the best way to ease the pain on your joints is to vary your workout. Simple Solution: Include an elliptical trainer and stationary bike in your cardio routine. 2. No Pain, No Gain. Here’s the big problem with this one: People will push twice as hard and go far beyond their limits if they think their workout isn’t paying off. A sharp, tingling pain is a red flag and probably a sign you should consult a physician. Simple Solution: Avoid torn ligaments by lightening your load and adding more repetitions. The “high rep, low weight” formula is ideal for toning muscle. 3. Work the Same Muscles Every Day to Build Strength. Ever hear of overtraining? Well, that’s likely to happen with this scenario. When you overtrain, you put your body at risk of injury and rob your muscles of much needed rest between workouts. Simple Solution: Stagger and alternate your workouts so your body has adequate downtime between training routines. If you’re weight training, avoid doing the same exercises day after day, week after week. Mix it up, and give your muscles a jolt. Instead of losing your head—which only makes matters worse—check yourself with three proven methods for bringing your temper off the broiler. 1. Don’t Take It Personally. If someone offends you, keep in mind that most of the time it’s not intentional. Remember that guy who cut you off on the drive to work? Guess what: He doesn’t know your name, probably didn’t see you there and definitely didn’t plan to ruin your day—unbeknownst to you. Take the high road and let it go. It’s not worth the anguish, anxiety or repercussions to point out the error of his ways. Besides, that’s what the highway patrol is for. 2. Put Yourself in Timeout. When you’re irate, your heart beats faster and your blood pressure increases. It may sound cliché, but taking a series of long, deep breaths is like a shot of clarity. It slows the heart, manages stress and improves your mental state. Plus, it puts distance and perspective between the event that set you off and the likelihood of overreacting. Try it—it’s good medicine. 3. Reach Out. If anger and irritability are serious problems for you, all theS insightful tips in the world won’t make a difference. Find an anger-support group, a medical professional or someone to talk to who can help you put your feelings in perspective. There are plenty of healthy ways to deal with anger. Pretending you don’t have a problem isn’t one of them. |
